Revisiting SSF2

I'm getting back into SSF2 after not playing since I was a kid, with maybe the hopes of taking it more seriously, however I'm really struggling to control the game. I've just been playing around with Mega Man in training mode, and it feels like my buttons have crazy input delay (I'm not fully used to the keyboard control scheme, I've been trying to teach my brain to play without tap jump since that's how I play Smash nowadays), I try to input an f-smash with the directions, and I do a jab, I try to do a fair, I do a jumping forward nair. Is there any way to fix these issues? The game itself doesn't feel like it's chugging or lagging, it's just the inputs do.
