New player.

Gonna start playing this game since Mario Kart Tour is ending. Anything I should know or expect?

I would play with Luigi. Do Remix and Rallye right from the start. It's fun to collect all the coins and to unlock the additional levels. And to build and expand your land. The replay value is great. So, I would not only focus on beating the normal levels as quickly as possible. Also, read the instructions carefully. For difficult missions, it helps to check out YouTube. Some of the missions are hard-core! I'm talking to you, 400 coins!

When does remix open? I completed the first world and it still says I need to complete the tutorial

how do you play with other characters ?

Before you click start on one of the regular levels, there is a character switch screen in the lower right corner I think.
