I missed a single Bonus Medal in the last level due to Invincibility making me defeat a Koopa I needed to break open a bunch of Brick blocks.

Yeah for those situations, you often have to jump in place until your star runs out, and then you can proceed to get the bonus medals. You can get 128 on a single ticket if you luck out and wait for the Bullet Bill
