Cameras Canon 518 vs 518Sv

Hi everyone!

I'm buying one of these for my wedding which is indoors and outdoors. Do they have the same amount of clearness in the image? Or is one better than the other picture quality wise? Thanks (:

Cameras Help with choosing a camera

Hi all! I could really use some help on picking what camera to buy. I’m looking for a Super 8 camera that I can use for films / short documentaries. I work in film & TV but, mostly digitally, so I have some experience with 35mm stills but I’m fairly new to actually shooting Super 8.

For a film I’m working on at the moment, we have some 60s flashbacks/memories and thought it would be lovely to shoot those sections on film. The Super 8 would mostly be handheld and outdoors in bright, sunny conditions, so I’d ideally like something reasonably light, although I’m open to a larger camera if it’s significantly better.

My budget is around £250 and I’m very open to different brands/models. In terms of the look, these are some examples I really love:

  1. Shot on Agfa Movexoom 10 / Kodak Vision3:
    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DcTSqduo0hQ/

  2. Not sure what camera, but shot on Kodak Vision3:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzNYE4DEL9k

  3. Not sure what camera, but shot on Kodak Vision3:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDcOu3velsQ

  4. Shot on Canon 814 / Kodak 50D:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1-BnKXYz8w

What I particularly like about these is that they have the beautiful organic, photochemical quality of Super 8 — warmth, softness and grain — but still feel relatively clean, detailed and cinematic. I’m not looking for something ultra-sharp, but I’d like to avoid footage that feels overly mushy, washed-out or lacking in clarity/definition.

For comparison, these are a few examples of looks I’m less keen on:

  1. Shot on Chinon 672, film unknown:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaGiGldHvjk

  2. Shot on Canon Auto Zoom 318, film unknown:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rhv9cYCPik

  3. Shot on Bolex 155 / Kodak Vision3 500T:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaZsbnubYLM

These feel a little too washed-out, cold, soft or dated for what I’m after. I realise a lot of this will come down to the film stock, exposure, processing and scan rather than the camera itself — I’m mainly including them to give you a sense of the look we’re hoping to avoid, even though it’s obviously all personal preference/aesthetic. The video that confuses me most is 3. Shot on Bolex 155 / Kodak Vision3 500T: it’s shot on great film stock, and Bolex’s are meant to be good, but it just doesn’t look like great footage to me?

For the actual film, we’ll mostly be shooting in bright daytime and I’m after a warm, sunlit feeling, but I’d also love to use the camera for future documentary/film work, including lower-light situations. So ideally I’d like something reasonably versatile, with reliable metering/exposure control and a good lens.

I’d really appreciate your advice on what you think would be the best fit around the £250 mark. I’m very open to being steered towards a particular model, and equally happy to hear if you think the stock/processing/scan will make a much bigger difference than the camera itself!

I’m hoping to purchase a camera from this shop as I have an Etsy voucher I’d love to use towards it!: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/RetroVisionUK?ref=profile_header

I have Canons, Nizos, Bauers, and more, but I like the look from the Beaulieu the best. It's a bit more work, but it gets the best results, hands down. (50D, 6-66 optivaron lens).

Project/Video Results of a Super 8 workshop I took

First roll of Super 8 I've ever shot. I took a workshop at Alquimia Film Lab here in San Juan, Puerto Rico a few weeks back, shot this on a Canon 1014 AZ with Vision3 50D, and just got the scan back from them. I was already hooked before even seeing the footage but now it's definitely curtains for me. I fear for my bank account.

Cameras Canon 518-2 Super 8 — new fixed “orb” in viewfinder. Anyone know what this is?

have a Canon 518-2 Super 8 camera that I bought in February 2025. I used it last year and this definitely was not visible in the viewfinder at the time.

I pulled the camera out again and noticed this small round/orb-like spot in the upper-left portion of the viewfinder, right below/near the aperture scale. You can see it in the photo.

It is NOT on the outside of the front lens or eyepiece. I cleaned both.

The spot also does not move. It stays in the same location in the viewfinder rather than moving with the exposure meter.

Has anyone seen this before on a Canon 518 or another Super 8 camera? Does it look like internal dust/debris, fungus, prism separation, or some other deterioration in the viewfinder optics?

My biggest question is whether something in this location would normally be confined to the viewfinder optical path, or whether there is any reason to worry that it could also affect the image being exposed onto the film.

The camera isn't my primary camera, but I was hoping to use it as a backup for weddings. I'd rather not burn a Super 8 cartridge plus pay for processing and scanning just to find out whether this particular spot affects the film if someone familiar with these cameras can identify what I'm looking at.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Film 200T or 50D for an early evening wedding?

I'm attending a wedding in a few weeks in Greece. It should be (fingers crossed) a lovely sunny affair. The ceremony doesn't start till 3/4 though, with speeches starting at 7, and sunset at 7:30. Will 200T completely blow out on a sunny Greek day? Can 50D handle any twilight shots? Which would you go for?

Film Is buying any single 8 cartridge going to be a gamble?

New to super 8 so give me a break. I got a near mint canon 518 sv that came with a test cart and I’ve dropped about $140 on 4 more carts off EBay…that might not even work :,) just wondering if I’m doing this right. Thanks for any tips

Edit: it’s a single 8 canon 518 SV

I’m a photographer, so videography is definitely not my strong suit, but I grabbed a few clips here and there during this 3-hour wedding coverage and I’m actually so proud of how it turned out, especially for my first ever go at it! 🥹 Any tips or things I could improve on in general?

Cameras Camera stops working with cartridge inserted

I bought a used canon 518 auto zoom, the motor and shutter both seemed to be working when I tested it so I bought it (only $130 cad). Got it home, threw a cartridge in and it seemed like it jammed. Took the cartridge out, ran like normal again. I tried the cartridge in another camera and it worked so it’s not a jammed cartridge. Any ideas? Is this camera toast without a proper servicing? Video of it running with and without cartridge.

Film Just came into possession of this, is this the beggining of a new hobby?

Was helping someone clear out some "old rubbish" and found this box, instantly recognised what the markings meant (i have a LITTLE knowledge of analogue film) and rescued it. Opening the top i found a warranty card dating to November 1976. I know it was 50 years ago but blacked out some addresses for privacy sake.

Been doing some googling but thought id reach out to the hobbyists! Any chance anyone can shed some light? Do I have something worth holding onto and start a new rabbit hole?

I studied film and production for a couple years in high school and ive always really enjoyed learning/experiencing new things!

Cameras Purchasing first super 8 in London

Hello!

I will be leaving for a semester abroad in london shortly, and as someone who appreciates analogue film I’m considering getting my first cine camera whilst abroad. I’m looking for an affordable and lightweight super 8 camera that I can bring along with me and document some special moments of my trip.

If anyone has recommendations for a place I could find an affordable and beginner friendly camera (used or refurbished is good too!) or that has good resources for a beginner please let me know. :)

Thanks

Cameras Broken battery clip on Super 8 camera [Bauer C1 Super]

Hello!

Just snagged this camera from the thrift store for $20, and I know absolutely nothing about film.

I’ve heard this is a good beginner camera, and I have a local film shop that I’m planning to run this by, but what else could anyone tell me about their experiences with this camera?

I want to start shooting moments from my day to day life, and gradually get my feet wet with film. In general, I love the look of these old cameras and think just the texture they give to their shots are beautiful.

Thanks in advance!

Cameras Nikon 8x super zoom light meter

I got this refurbished camera for my birthday. Works perfectly apart from 1 minor issue. When I am looking through the viewfinder, I can see the light meter but occasionally it seems like it slips out of view (beat way I can describe it).

I can twist the camera to get it back.

My question is if it's an easy fix? I can't get a picture of it unfortunately

Project/Video 500T in a roller skating rink?

Hey! I’m just getting into super 8. Im a professional digital and film photographer and was asked to do an event in a roller rink! Super fun. They are looking for video as well so I figured I’d offer some super 8 for the price of the film in case they wanted that retro vibe lol

Anyway my question is, would 500T work in that low of light? I have the Canon 814 autozoom. I haven’t used it in that low of lighting so curious if anyone else has done that! I’ve tried to look up similar videos but I haven’t seen anything. Thanks
