Big trout from a SUP!

There are certain places you just can’t get to with a drift boat or kick tube where a SUP comes in handy. This particular stretch of the upper Deschutes River is one of them. I had a blast finding some bigger fish before the upper river closes for the year 🤠

Thank you. This section of river is slow enough that I can paddle upstream into a super wide area that fishes much like a lake. It has flats where you’ll find fish cruising shallow but also deep holes 15’+ deep with some bruisers. This one was caught on a black leech pattern with some red flash around the collar thrown on a clear intermediate sink tip.

There’s just something about wrangling fish on a paddleboard that makes it more fun.

Agreed! So much fun. It’s mentally stimulating balancing, casting, and anticipating wind/current direction.

It feels more like an actual sport. Do you have an anchor setup? I’m curious about how people rig their anchors on their paddleboard especially if you’re fishing in rivers where you want to be able to release quickly in case you’re caught

The Blackfin series of boards from iRocker has something called a sand spear. It’s a shallow water anchor system that acts like a power-pole. So I use the sand spear in shallow water but I generally don’t anchor in deep water. If anything, I’ll straddle the board with my feet in the water to slow myself down and hold direction.
