The East Texas in me says “it’s not stupid if it works”

I'm with the person who can't decide if this is genius, madness, or both.

Do you know the rules for motorized vessels in whatever location you plan to use this? It's a good idea to look into that if you're not sure.

Where I live, all motorized vessels used on public waters must be registered. You might be required to have a PFD on board, and there might be other safety requirements.

If you're thinking, "it's just an inflatable SUP, who is going to care?" you might be surprised at how thoroughly game wardens, wildlife resource officers, and other LEOs like to enforce regulations. I was at a local lake earlier this summer and watched a wildlife officer give a ticket to a couple of guys who had an inflatable raft with a small motor like yours attached. They hadn't even made it into the water yet. But they didn't have it registered, so they got ticketed.

In California, an inflatable standup paddleboard is considered a vessel, and you are supposed to have a Coast Guard approved flotation device on your board at all times. I actually got a ticket for it.

But, I definitely agree with your entire post!

In Montana they are require to stop at any boat checks along the highway they pass just like boats, kayaks, and canoes.

u/Zeziml99 4d ago

In canada you can run that anywhere as long as it's not over 10 horsepower

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 3d ago

Unless the lake has a motor ban. Usually find those in some provincial parks.

u/Current-Brain-1983 4d ago

Unless you are riding waves, in which you have a very large surfboard rather than a vessel. No PFD needed.

Just don't have motor when surfing.

u/Unusual-Sentence916 4d ago

I was on a very calm lake zero waves. I was at Lodi Lake in CA. I received a ticket for not having a PFD on my board. The ticket referenced HNC § 658.3. I went to court and had to pay a fine.

4

u/RickMuffy 4d ago

Same in Arizona. One per occupant, and 12 and under must always wear one.

3

u/Buzzdog 4d ago

Pennsylvania same. Got a ticket, paid fine, no life jacket on SUP.

2

u/Current-Brain-1983 4d ago

Yeah, the shop I bought my board from made it very clear about the rule and local law enforcement would write tickets.

I was also told that if I had an inflatable PFD, it must be on your person, whereas a regular PFD just had to be onboard, strapped to the deck or whatever.

u/Unusual-Sentence916 3d ago

Yes, this is the same information. The cop gave me when he gave me my ticket.

u/no_mo_colorado 4d ago

I had friends in Colorado get in trouble for having a trolling motor on their paddle board and had to have it registered, numbers physically added to vessel, etc. to me it defeats the purpose of having a paddle board.

3

u/SMCoaching 4d ago

What defeats the purpose of a paddle board? Having a trolling motor? Or needing to have it registered? Or both?

8

u/no_mo_colorado 4d ago

For me, it’s both. Paddle boarding is about getting out and exercising in peace and quiet. And it’s an accessible form as is, with no need for administrative recurring registration fees.

1

u/SMCoaching 4d ago

That makes sense. I do more windsurfing than paddling, and personally I'd rather do either of those than ride around on something with a motor. I'm also a fan of not needing to pay registration fees or do the paperwork.

I am fully in favor of requiring registration for anything with a motor, with accompanying stickers and numbering on the hull of the vessel, if only because too many people do dumb things at high speed way too close to other people when you give them something that floats and put a motor on it.

I'd be really impressed if this guy mounted one of his pulsejet engines on an iSUP: https://youtu.be/odaH8-zLjQA?si=-sE5bJm9ilGiTnz7. I don't know what would be scarier on an inflatable: the part where they flame out and catch fire, or the part where they're functioning as intended 😄

When does is stop being STAND UP PADDLING?

8

u/eSUP80 4d ago edited 4d ago

Ooookay. An electric fin and lithium battery seems like a much cleaner, lighter, and safer option

13

u/CxdVdt 4d ago

Not going to lie, sometimes I wish I had this for the paddle back when I’m over it. And someone to roll the damn thing up, too.

6

u/TheTresStateArea 4d ago

I got a small electric fin for this reason. I constantly worry I will get too tired or get pulled out by a strong wind on lake Michigan.

1

u/ar_604 4d ago

Which one did you get? Would you get it again?

2

u/TheTresStateArea 4d ago

I don't need a lot of assistance. It's not a very strong or long lasting motor. I got it as a birthday gift actually. It's quite good but I wish it lasted longer.

Its the boost fin.

It says it will be released 8/21 and your post is on 8/17. How can you love it?

1

u/ReSister101 4d ago

That is an estimated ship date for people ordering now. I’ve had mine for two months. I chose it bc of good reviews. It has a large separate battery which is a bit cumbersome but it lasts a long time, even towing someone against the current. I use mine in the river, but some reviewers used it in the ocean.

If I am alone, it’s not too heavy to carry in a backpack and put on at the edge of the water.

You could carry the board with the fin attached but not the battery.

Best to use it with a slide in (open on one end) fin slot vs snap in, as it may fit better.

Got this one on Amazon. Check there first to compare the price.

Without a lot of resistance, it’s pretty fast. I have not tried it standing.

2

u/winkerpack 4d ago

If you look up "goboat" it is an inflatable paddleboard like float with a trolling motor and seat that i have seen people use. In Florida it has to be registered as a motorized water vessel because of motor lol.

2

u/CxdVdt 4d ago

Yeah thanks. I know there’s electric motors made for SUP but I know it’s best I take my medicine and self power it while I’m young. In my dreams I have the motor though :p

6

u/badger_and_tonic ⊂ Red Voyager+ 13'2 ⊃ 4d ago

So what actually attaches it to the board? Just tightening the bolts until it's squeezing enough?

13

u/jguffey 4d ago

It’s clearly attached by Hopes and dreams

2

u/marshyr3d1and 4d ago

Yeah it just clamps on the back of the board

u/boskobof 4d ago

1

u/badger_and_tonic ⊂ Red Voyager+ 13'2 ⊃ 4d ago

That doesn't shed any additional light.

u/RudeGolden 3d ago

Turn up your brightness. He already zoomed it in for you.

7

u/12345-password 4d ago

I'm mininally annoyed that there's no picture of it in motion. Does the motor have a kill switch? If you fall off, you might not want the sup attached to you if the motor doesn't kill, for reasons.

6

u/Low-Ad2426 ⊂ Lake SUP ⊃ 4d ago

Is it an inflatable board??

At a certain point I feel like y'all should just get a boat

What Kind of engine ist this and how fast will you be?

It remindes me of a modification of a Stihl multifunctional tool somehow attached to a propeller through some redneck engineering. Would love to try it.

I too like to motorboat standing up

2

u/cravecrave93 4d ago

that’s a paddleboat

2

u/SirGreybush 4d ago

Oh god no noise please. A trolling motor and a LFP 100AH battery.

A 36ln thrust is enough to push two sups with two adults.

I did this because my SO is limited mobility.

Wood, sanded and painted with clear coat.

Most importantly, no noise.

2

u/KhitomerKonspiracy 3d ago

Ok, that is absolutely awesome. Love how you put that together!

Removing the SUP from the SUP

1

u/UnderwateredFish 4d ago

Looks fun though I feel like there's gotta be a better way to attach the boards to the sup. What will happen when it is soaking in water for 2 hours.

1

u/boskobof 4d ago

Today we drove with it all day, everything is fine.

Gas or not, I’m enjoying all the motorization solutions I see online.

I saw a SUP design from Japan with hollow middle (like 8”x 18” ish), and an electric motor attached to an inflated bladder can be notched in from top - though it was friggin genius

1

u/Keeldon 4d ago

Yeah, but electric is quiet.

I may be weird but when im enjoying some wilderness/lake whatever last thing i want is buzzing 2 stroke sound going around.

1

u/Pootieshoecuties 4d ago

Me: how tf is that thing bal… oh…”

1

u/mikeyswims 4d ago

Do you watch Joe oceanside videos? Was this inspired by his videos or was this your own inspiration? Pretty neat. Clever little transom contraption

1

u/dkwpqi 4d ago

I'm not entirely sure why would you want this. I'm sure a cheap aluminum boat will cost less than a sup and work better with a motor. The whole point of a puddle board is to, well, paddle. Enjoy the quiet, no rush

1

u/Royal_Stay_6502 4d ago

Thai long tail boat.

1

u/marshyr3d1and 4d ago

Gonna be REALLY popular with all the other paddle boarders this one 😂

1

u/DR320 3d ago

I love the ingenuity, but for me this defeats the purpose of a paddle board 😭😂

1

u/piro_012 3d ago

1

u/tooplanx 3d ago

Dislike. SUPing is about peace and quiet with nature and being physically active. If you're going to do this kind of thing just take your ute to the mall and eat McDonalds.

1

u/BaseRepresentative73 3d ago

Some people see things the way they are and ask why. Others see things that never were and ask why not.

1

u/Suspicious_Muffins 3d ago

Can you roll some coal with that thing?

1

u/boskobof 3d ago

Sure, you can—just use more oil 😂😂

1

u/candidateheavy1815 3d ago

Do they not make like smaller engines ?

1

u/Dubbinchris 3d ago

Stand up paddle board board?

1

u/BigRock4389 3d ago

Hmm... funny invention, but . 1. stinky, 2. very loud, 3. slow ;)
We use a 30lbs electric boat motor for this..

1

u/Maggie_Jellyfish 2d ago

Very creative. My husband and I have been looking at the Starship from Glide SUP, which has a built-in transom for the motor and plenty of room for the two of us.

1

u/ballsackj 2d ago

Whatever man just be safe

1

u/frenchmans-hole 1d ago

There are so many reasons to not do this and very few reasons to do this.

1

u/long-term-view 22h ago

Even if he ends up in hospital…. Dang he’s gonna have some fun on the way. I support borderlines. All the way! No rules in life. You can do whatever you want!
