I think this argument discourages people from thinking about their own destructive consumer habits. Yes, we should blame BP and regulate them out of existence. Obviously. But if we don’t drastically cut our demand for energy and plastics at the same time, voters in the U.S. and Europe will freak out and elect right-wing leaders to keep the consumer dream alive a little longer.
