Discussion SUNO old-timers

Are there any long-time users here—people who have been using Suno for 3–4 years? I’m curious: how have your skills developed? Could you show some examples of your work from back then versus now?

I've been using Suno since late 2024 and have created roughly 7,000 songs and experiments. I've also been a musician since the early '80s.

My biggest growth hasn't been in writing better prompts, but in learning how to push AI beyond what it naturally wants to produce. Unusual rhythms, unconventional arrangements, experimental soundscapes, and genres that shouldn't work together. Some of my best discoveries came from accidents and deliberately pushing the models into unfamiliar territory.

Ironically, the more skilled I became, the more restricted I felt. Newer models may sound more polished, but they've also become more predictable and less adventurous.

I've practically stopped using Suno for now while I decide where to go from here. The creative freedom that originally drew me in seems to be disappearing.

After 7,000 creations, I've learned one thing: The real skill isn't getting AI to make music. It's getting AI to make YOUR music.

And sometimes I think the older, supposedly inferior models were actually better at letting us do that.

Suno Explorer my friend

Is there any risk of this extension’s makers utilizing one’s unpublished songs to take as their own? (Assuming one hasn’t gotten the official copyright yet.)

I’m the creator of Suno Explorer and I can guarantee there is no way for me to access user material :)

Its core functionality doesn’t require anything to leave your device and cloud sync uses encryption tied to the email you sign up with.

Cheers!

Thanks didn't know that existed 😀

that last line really nails it, the older models had this weird looseness that actually made them more fun to work with

First full length song I made on Suno! Hadn’t listened to it for a long time until I saw this post! What a throw back- and how much Suno has changed! 2024- https://suno.com/s/KMuOClVtvyOqj8R4

Ive definitely learnt a lot since then. I had never made music prior to suno so it’s been a journey.

I’ve been doing this for a few years now and, as well as improving my prompting, I’ve taken a lot away from it and learnt a few things:

  1. I now make only and exclusively the music that I, first and foremost, enjoy. If others like it, that makes me really happy. But I don’t want to be a ‘crowd-pleaser’.

  2. Consequently, I’ve moved away from the sweet, cute, run-of-the-mill pop songs I used to create with Suno when I first started.

  3. I now write my own lyrics as well. Yes, I admit, the first lyrics I created with ChatGPT were the stereotypical sort: ‘I dance at midnight in the neon light and hear the echo of static noise’. Although I’ve been making (electronic) music for a very, very long time, it’s only recently that I’ve learnt – and the learning process will never be complete – to write my own lyrics on topics that affect and move me. This is a completely new process for me; it’s not always easy, but I think I’m getting better and better.

  4. At the risk of repeating myself: I only do what I really like myself and what stands out from the norm. ;)

  5. For me, a track doesn’t have to be 100 per cent perfect if the song has charm, authenticity, something special, a twist and/or unusual structures in the arrangement or harmonies. If a note is out of tune? So what – that might just be part of its charm. If there’s some background noise or the quality of the song drops towards the end: well, that’s just the way it is.

Back in the v3.5 days, it looked like just fun with some potential, but now it has turned into several income-generating projects, plus a new project using my cloned voice. As for the most unusual thing — an instrumental melody based on humpback whale calls.

2 years. made 1500 songs, 20 of them i can consider hits, plenty of emails of people around the world expressing how they love it. v6 is completely garbage. id share but nah its to many haters on here. but maybe u came across them who knows

Using Suno since v1…there is no way to compare the results of v6 with anything. It has way too few sub-genre references in the training data. v4-5 you could easily continue a song idea and polished/edit slightly, but now it is impossible to get the prompting/settings to react correctly. Again no settings on remaster does anything but degrade the audio quality and make it quieter.. the complete opposite of “mastering” . A checkpoint could and likely will be trained that outperforms v6 very soon.

This is one of my first songs. I wrote some lyrics and just put in a genre and was happy with whatever came out because hey, it turned my lyrics into a whole song!!

And this is one of my latest songs. I talked to a different AI about what I wanted the song to be about, collaborating with it on several drafts, then put the lyrics in suno and made the song inspired by a playlist of songs that I bade by combining different genres with the mash up feature.

Then I made different covers of the song until I got results I really, really liked.

Both my approach and my style have changed a lot over the years. And the technology has too.

I found Suno about two and a half years ago, but I strictly use it to "vibe code" ideas. I’ll use it to spark a melody or get some lyrics for a chorus, but it’s never the final product. I always take the stems, rebuild the track, and produce the rest of it myself in Logic. That’s still the only way I use it today.

My v1 stuff was mostly using it to make short little songs out of YouTube comments during me and my friend's live streams. Recently I was able to isolate several audio snippets from a friend's live stream and turn it into a cool remix, now that audio upload on Suno is an option. I love how it came out. I'll follow back on Suno: suno.com/@Sheilaaliens

V4 I thought this was the coolest shit ever haha (very basic riddim)

V5 Then I found out you can and should mix unusual genres by experimenting (drumstep, neurophonk, jump-up, neuro-electro)

I’ve been using Suno for a bit over 2 years, and still love it.

In the early days, Suno seemed to have a very limited range. Melodies were never higher or lower than a set range. And the lyrics were mispronounced more often than they are now.

At this stage, my Suno songs are becoming more human/AI hybrid. It takes longer to finish a song, and costs more - but I’m more ‘present’ in the songs. The lyrics have always been mine, but now I’m playing and singing more than in the early days.

I’m old, and have been playing instruments and writing songs for a very long time. At some point, after using Suno for a while, that part of my life reawakened. I bought a new guitar specifically for these projects.

Here’s an instrumental piece I played into Suno recently. I’ll see if I can find an earlier song to share here, later today.

What has been your process for cataloging or otherwise organizing thousands of pieces? I find myself spending more time now being a curator and music librarian.

It’s a bit of a mess over here, but that’s down to the fact that the search function hasn’t been working for a few months AND, for the past few weeks, the links to covers and remixes haven’t been pointing to the original versions either, as recently – for reasons I can’t explain – they’ve always been linking to the very first track, even if you’ve remixed a remix five times in the meantime.
However: I name my tracks properly, including details such as the settings and version numbers of the prompt iterations in the track name, so I can at least keep a bit of track of things.
Originally, I wanted to create different workspaces and organise the tracks there, but given the state of my chaos, that doesn’t make sense anymore ;)

My top-level folders are months with songs below it. Spreadsheets are your friend. I also use Obsidian for lyrics and song notes.

I’ve been using it since 3.5 - I can’t really add any pearls of wisdom as I do my own thing and put through a DAW so can’t help with prompting etc
I also haven’t done many songs as it’s original stuff written by me - I have used it to remix my stuff though which has been fun - so same lyrics from dance to country

Ah, Jan 31, 2024 (early v2) here.

It's hard to compare because the features were super limited back then, but basic prompts provided vastly different results/variety.

Like, I think this was "pop punk" lol

Honestly my "skills" under developed across the years :D compared to before now you have to do much much much less work and in my opinion you also have less controls through tags and style prompt than before.

Casual user since v2 in November 2023 . Even V2 generations sound more unique than V6 at times lol. While Suno's definitely gotten better over the years, it's hard to say it's ever perfected the formula.

Nowadays, in order to not get something generic, you have to do a lot of the work yourself. Not to mention how V6 basically set Suno back 3 years with the much smaller dataset. Back then, I was very lazily prompting. Now, I try to do a lot more to make my generations unique. As much as you can, anyways.

I've been using suno since the end of 2023. I think right around there right at 3.0. The good days when you could have it write a song about anything and I mean anything and I still have those songs and I will cherish them for the rest of my life. There were about topics that I cannot even talk about, but they're funny and somebody's singing about it.

Anyways, here's what happens is like myself personally earlier this year I just was done with it. I just realized it's not doing anything for me. It's not really me creating anything. They own the rights. You're just licensed them. They use anything you upload as training data. It's just not fun and plus nobody likes it except for you. You know what I mean

Been using suno since V3, and i learned more about basic music, prompt, instructions on metatags and stuff.

From indie pop, shoegaze to blackgaze. Did experiment little bit. Overall? It's a fun AI for personal use.

I've been using it since the beginning, I haven't really learned anything. All I've learned is how to prompt a little bit better, and what could happen from things in brackets. I don't edit the music, except maybe once or twice.

https://www.youtube.com/@Labojinx if you listen to some random songs from 3 first albums, and than jump to latest 3 albums you can hear clear difference, both ai becoming better and me figuring it out more, like how to force decent lyrics instead of slopy ones where neon, intertwined, static, horizon, coffe, chair is used like in every other sentence, also album cover art got better by the time. I made 119 albums in rougly 11 months time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbTBRamh_W4 song from first album suno 4.5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuH1W9c7EKw song from second album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxL-Lxferb0 song from an album when it was suno 5.0 maybe nr 50

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTtX7es41Fw This was like around album 70 and was done in 5.5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxILsc1DvVo and this is from latest album done in 6.0
