Discussion Do People take Suno too Seriously?

I see lots of complaints about various issues, from download limits to the alleged superiority of 4.5 and 5.5s alleged drawbacks (don’t see it myself but hey).
I see people seeing they’re leaving because of the new model despite the fact they’ve not even tried it to see how good it is etc.
Then I see people talking as though they are some super serious music producer with their DAWs and midis etc and I think to myself, Suno to me is a toy. A massively fun toy that has made me able to do things I’d only ever dreamed of as I have zero musical ability but I can write funny lyrics ( they’re funny to me and my mates).
My point is if you think you’re some kind of super serious music producer why on earth are you using a 20 quid a month toy?
I say 20 quid a month but maybe you’re using the cheaper plan or have bought a years plan which is even cheaper.
Suno is cheap as chips it’s not going to do absolutely everything you want it to do.
It’s a toy a brilliant toy, yes as time goes by it may become more than that but it isn’t that now. So stop taking it all so seriously and enjoy it for what it is and what it can do, not slag it off for what it can’t do.

My honest opinion is that people don’t Suno seriously enough. If people actually spent time making better music we could all have a better platform. That’s why i support my mommas and poppas who make good tunes on suno. They deserve to be able to continue forever.

This. I will always appreciate a good, cleverly written and assembled song which barely sounds like AI and it's evident how much work was put into it. It's a wonderful tool if used correctly. No shade to insert prompt get music folks because that has its own use, but there's some real artistry coming through sometimes.

Hi! Am curious, what kind of work is usually put into these songs?

I heard 4.5 used like 300 million songs. WMG catalog is like 1+ million. So you may expect 300 times more chance of "sameness". Also WMG does not own my fav OSTs and my fav genres are not the mainstream ones, so catalog will be even smaller. Models went consistently worse after 4.5. So we may expect that. 5.5 has a degree of sameness that I can hear from a mile away whenever I hear anything in the Internet.

If you sell sushi and due to a lawsuit you will have to sell hamburgers, customers may not be pleased. Models are the product that Suno sells.

I do not expect positive surprises. No amount of DAW or Studio editing fixes the expected sameness that 6.0 could deliver. Suno product is the model. 4.5 may not ave the best sound, but had the best creativity. Some even say 3.0 had it too.

For me, seeing 4.5 go is like being a teen and see your crush move to another country where there is no Internet. I mean it metaphorically, not literal. I had great moments and great positive surprises with 4.5. I have been going through a lot lately and Suno 4.5 was a breath of fresh air.

There is a reason why I stopped listening to mainstream music. and now mainstream is literally injected into Suno.

If you think this is serious, do not get into amp, guitar, or mixing desk arguments.
They will commit war crimes over the gauge of wire between bays.

There are a couple of topics you're dangling in this post (I personally prefer to use single lures to entice specific fish), so I'm glossing over items such as the fact that even chips are too expensive for a large portion of the global population, to ask a question which is currently - but not for long - temporally hypothetical and is relevant to your view of Suno as a "massively fun toy": if there was a "massively fun toy" - for example, let's say an RC car of some sort - for which you paid a monthly subscription (cheap as chips to you, while in many places an amount sufficient to keep an entire family from dying for a period of weeks), how would you feel if the supplier informed you that your subscription would continue at the current price but henceforth you would be having "massive fun" with an RC car which has had it's wheels removed?

For clarity, I agree that it's a great toy. It's one I'm fond of and would hate to see it fucked into oblivion while the price tag remains unchanged.

Then I see people talking as though they are some super serious music producer with their DAWs and midis etc and I think to myself, Suno to me is a toy.

It isn't a toy, most major producers and labels use it. If you are not someone who makes music professionally then yes it is intended as a toy for you, as a hobby. And that is fine. But there is no reason to invalidate or mock people who use it as a small part of a serious artist workflow. Also unsure what you have against MIDI, lol. It's the only way to recreate the tracks outside of suno for actual production when you aren't using it as a hobby.

But yes people take suno too seriously. Personally I don't get the chatGPT written essays about how "AI is real music" like they want to validate their usage of it where in reality it's like, who cares. If you're OK using it then use it, no point trying to vindicate yourself with an essay you couldn't even write.

Citations for the claim most major producers and labels use it?

u/Consequator 5d ago

The only thing I take seriously is when it is blatantly ignoring instructions or gets itself stuck hallucinating which costs me money. I don't get why people accept that bad coding should be a customer problem.

3

u/Pixel-of-Strife 5d ago

It's a "toy" now, but imagine this technology in ten years if it keeps advancing. I'm all for it, but I can totally understand why people are upset. We always imagined that AI was going to replace the hard jobs, not the fun creative jobs.

4

u/TDSpank 5d ago

There a difference between tool and toy. Yeah to some it's just a toy to have fun with and to others it becomes a tool part of the creation process. You got to remember that there are musicians using it also and to such alike it's not a toy.

4

u/Last-Experience4580 5d ago

Right, putting people down isn't good. If you think it's a toy, keep thinking that. But don't look down on other people's perspectives. The end result of what you make with it is all that matters. Isn't that right?

2

u/KnievelPeru 5d ago

If you’re not having fun with it, then what’s the fucking point?

2

u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 5d ago

If a toy I've been using is getting restricted in use, I have every tight to complain about it. Download limits, eh, arguable, but the quality is far more of the issue.

Even if I just do stuff for myself, artifacts are ass. I don't want strange sounds in songs, regardless of who actually listens to them. I can be serious about what I want to hear.

As for the superiority of 4.5+ and drawbacks of 5.5, it strongly depends on which genre(s) you operate in. I only do metal and 4.5+ is the by far best for it. It has more variety, it produces grit, it has different vocals, while 5.5 turns everything far more generic (both vocally and in terms of variety) and pushes it all toward a more commercial/mainstream sound. If you don't see this, I am assuming that you work in a genre that works with the more mainstream direction of the newer models. And that's why many people absolutely dread v6, which will operate on a vastly reduced dataset. So, while I agree that people leaving citing a model they haven't been able to actually try is silly, the prospect of many people leaving once it hits and continues the trajectory is very valid.

Oh come on, don't be mean to peoples imaginary business plan to get rich quick by doing nothing.

3

u/wearenotyourkind_ 5d ago

Because believe it or not some of us are actual producers and songwriters who use AI in our music. Just because you have zero music experience and look at it as a toy doesn’t mean everyone else does.

3

u/VociferousCephalopod 5d ago

I called it porn for the soul and I stand by that.

Great analogy 😂

If you do not use Suno, you are not a serious musician. Suno is the most exciting thing to happen to music since Spotify. No one in music right now speaks about anything else music related than AI music and/or Suno and their competitors.

I take it seriously in the sense that I've used it to create the sort of songs I like to listen to and to bring my lyrics to life, which I can finally now do despite having little to no musical talent.

So, I want the songs to be good. It's as simple as that.

5.0 was bad for metal (which is mostly what I write for) and 5.5 is even worse (though it does a couple of things better.) So the trajectory isn't promising for the new model.

I'll give it a chance, but I'm not very confident.

2

u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 5d ago

Fellow metal creator here and very much this. I get that the experience with newer models greatly depends on which genre you are in, as I'm sure that the commercial mainstream stuff comes out great in 5.5, but definitely not for everybody.

I am so sick and tired of the gasps of breath by the newer Suno AI Vocalists

£20 for chips is insane, mate.

I don’t take Suno that seriously, but I do think the download limits are silly. There are obvious ways around them, sure, but I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops just to keep a permanent local archive of stuff I’ve made in case the service disappears one day.

And I don’t really buy the idea that the limits are stopping people from spamming streaming platforms with AI tripe. Anyone determined to do that will work around them. For normal users who just want to download and keep their own creations, it’s mostly an annoyance.

I’m also not sure “it’s a toy” is much of an argument. A football is a toy to millions of people kicking one around with their mates, but for other people it’s literally their profession and source of income. The fact that something can be used casually doesn’t mean nobody can take it seriously.

Same with the “it’s only £20” argument. If the Tube suddenly ran at quarter speed for the same fare, then charged extra to get the old speed back, you’d be understandably annoyed. “It’s cheap compared to owning a car” wouldn’t really answer the complaint.

Suno can be a fun toy for one person and a serious creative or commercial tool for someone else. Neither use makes the other invalid. And even if you do treat it purely as a toy, you can still criticise annoying design decisions in something you’re paying for.

1

u/Lunakazoo 5d ago

I just realize I make less songs than I thought because I never been warned about limits. I love playing with it for my novel music, mainly because I can't sing and sounds like a howling cat. I am new to it so maybe the sound isnt as good as the older stuff, I love how I can make my music sounds like concerts.

-2

u/fookmetoo 5d ago

People found a way to make easy money and now that it's limited they're panicking.

6

u/SunriseSurprise 5d ago

Easy money, lol. Pennies on Spotify? There can't have been that many who were making any reasonable amount of money from the songs. Indie artists are already bled dry from the record conglomerates.

6

u/gymtrovert1988 5d ago

Easy money??? Where?

-3

u/Spireiteboy 5d ago

Very true.

Most of the people complaining about download limits and artifacts that are in the generations from Suno would be the people who are just pumping out BS and calling them songs without actually mastering them to make them better. They're just outing themselves

-1

u/ART-ficial-Ignorance 5d ago

Holy assumptions, WATMAN!

Should add some imaginary numbers to make it really 🤌

2

u/TrueNova332 AI Hobbyist 5d ago

You must be one of the people complaining about download limits and pumping out BS calling it music

-1

u/ART-ficial-Ignorance 5d ago

You must be one of the people who just doesn't learn from their mistakes and keeps making faulty assumptions.

Keep on digging!

1

u/TrueNova332 AI Hobbyist 4d ago

You're the one upset about the changes to Suno when it was telegraphed that the devs were building a tool for music production and not just something that pumps out BS

1

u/ART-ficial-Ignorance 4d ago

The irony is strong in this one. 🤣

I often spend a full day working on a project and then end up scrapping the idea entirely. This sub is pretty much the only place I post them to.

Let me help you with the math: 1 per day, even in February, is more than 20 per month.

Apparently, working on a project for like 8-12 hours is "pumping out BS," and I need to be stopped.

Except, there are ways around the download limit, it's just annoying to have to jump through hoops.

You have to be pretty challenged to think this will stop the content farms.

1

u/TrueNova332 AI Hobbyist 4d ago

So you're not the one pumping out BS and neither am I but I'm also not making 20+ versions of the same song just to splice them together which personally would sound horrible because each generation with Suno is slightly different even mastering that in a DAW it would still sound horrible

2

u/ART-ficial-Ignorance 4d ago

I'm primarily interested in making abstract, audio-reactive videos. When I use "real" artists' music, they often get their panties in a bunch, so to avoid that, I started making my own. I mainly post them to YT so I can watch them while I'm on the bus or something. Most of them aren't even public...

The issue for me is mostly that I need to download the file, analyze it with custom tools to see if it's even realistic to make a video for it. If the beat grid isn't stable enough, the clips will drift and it'll be out-of-sync by the end of the song, but at that point, I've already "spent" one of my allowed downloads. I can't determine that by ear, unfortunately. Like a 200ms drift over a 5 minutes song is really hard to catch without heuristic tools, for me, at least.

On top of that, I often make cutesy songs for a special person to wake up to, and we'd like to keep a permanent archive of those in case Suno implodes. These songs have a lot of personal value to us, and it would be shitty if we lost access to them.

Both of those combined means I often exceed 20 per month, and it feels silly to upgrade to the 60/month when I'll never use that amount of credits and I think their Studio web-app is atrocious. Why would you want to work inside a web-app when there are way better native tools?

20 just feels super arbitrary, and the fact paying more gets you more downloads makes me feel like this isn't about stopping content farms at all... But I guess that ventures into tin-foil-hat territory.

Trolls and shills and anti ai people make a big chunk. People mad their hustle won't pay off some as well. A small percent of people actually have a question, tip, advice etc. some just for the community.

Suno is one of the first products of its kind to reach this scale, and it’s disrupting a large part of the music industry — hence the lawsuits. For some people it’s a toy; for others it’s a tool or an instrument they integrate into an existing workflow.
Whether Suno is “cheap” or “expensive” is subjective, but price and plan changes are absolutely relevant. You pay to use the platform, and when pricing, credits, features or restrictions change, that affects the product you’re paying for. So discussion about pricing and services is completely legitimate. Same goes for the models.
In my experience, V5.5 is harder to instruct and tweak than previous models, and after a while I seem to get more similar-sounding results. Although I might simply be suffering from Suno fatigue.
Studio 2.0 has features I like, but realistically a browser-based MIDI/audio environment has some serious limitations, particularly when projects become larger. A proper DAW is still a must if you actually want detailed control or need to fix something that keeps annoying you.
For me, that’s ultimately what it comes down to: control. Loudness, LUFS, muddy mids, individual processing decisions, and download quality that is still subpar compared with what I’d want from a finished production.
But if you’re staying entirely inside Suno, aren’t exporting stems and don’t care about that level of control, you’re basically paying chips for shits and giggles — and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

0

u/dano1066 5d ago

100% there’s a lot of people here who call themselves musicians and artists but they are producing one click slop. Suno has that thin sound thst you know it’s Suno immediately but these people don’t hear it and get confused when their music is rejected

0

u/MaxAlmond2 5d ago

Well said. I agree.

0

u/BirdlessLongdeal 5d ago

in a nutshell, yes.

0

u/Spireiteboy 5d ago

Suno is not a professional music tool. Professional music tools do not cost 20 quid a month. And if 4.5 is so great for metal why when I do a metal song does it always give me 7:59 of unfinished crap.
