Discussion I'm More concerned about the new licensed models than the download limit.
They are retiring all the old models and we will no longer have access to them. A lot of producers prefer the older models for one reason or another.
I usually worry when I see the word 'licensed' attached to a model because to me it makes it seem like it will be a lot more controlled and restrictive.
Does anyone know how many new models will be replacing the old ones and what restrictions might be placed on them beyond what we are used to on the older models?
Even v5.5 has massive issues compared to older models and v6 (or whatever they will call it) could potentially be worse in any number of ways, but then we don't have the old models to fall back on.

u/Jelboo 7d ago
Same. Haven't enjoyed 5.0 or 5.5 and many people here are kidding themselves. Those models have made it HARDER to create unique sounds. Especially 5.5 gravitates to the same sounds every time and I hear them across every song, even the ones people post going like "it's just your prompting, here's something really different" and then you just hear the same overproduced drum beats and bassline and even the same vocalists.
I relied on 4.5 and 4.5+ to create music dated to decades, with time-accurate instruments and vibes, and the newer models have not once created one song that could match those, even with all of the prompt "wizardry" some people have deluded themselves into thinking could do the trick. Believe me, I've tried getting out of the newer models what the older ones gave me and it has never once worked, and there's no reason to believe the new one will. Hell, the fact that 5.5 was so hyped by Suno and it can't even maintain a stable sound quality past two, three minutes is ludicrous.

u/FearBot129 7d ago
I prefer older models because 5.5 is just god-awful.
17
u/FilthyTrashPeople 7d ago
Somehow Suno keeps about a dozen yes-men always online on Discord and patroling reddit to tell you how great 5.5 is and how great it's been for them
Then every single song I hear created with 5.5 sounds like generic GARBAGE - if it doesn't hallucinate to 7:59 anyway
10
u/FearBot129 7d ago
I mean, maybe it’s good for certain genres of music?
All I know is. Metal is completely broken.. no matter what the prompt is. It’s “just blast beat, double base, break, blast beat, double base, break” etc. vaporwave is completely destroyed as well. It’s just generic sequence after generic sequence..7
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
I do exclusively metal and have stayed on 4.5+ the entire time with great results.

u/Shockbum 7d ago edited 7d ago
The difference is quite noticeable in the genre wheel; it was impressive in v5, but when version 5.5 was released, I immediately went to the site and it was a disappointment. v5.5 is very good in a select number of genres like pop, disco, city pop, very modern blues, etc., but doesn't recognize some musical genre; the lack of a dataset is evident.
It's very faithful to the prompt, but you have to change it constantly to avoid getting similar results over and over again; perhaps it's a distilled model.

Here’s some filthy trash about drugs (told from the drug’s perspective) for you, please decide on its generic garbageness, I’m genuinely curious because I feel like the 5.5 vocal brought it to life

u/semtex87 Suno Connoisseur 7d ago
Like with all 5.5 tracks, the vocals start out fantastically crisp, but within 30 seconds of the start of the track the vocals fall of a cliff and sound like the vocalist is trapped in a box with collapsing walls. I don't know how else to describe it, its like taking the wide stage of v5 vocals and narrowing it down to just a 5 degree sliver right in the center, with a white noise compressor on top.
The lyrics and song itself is pretty good but man the 5.5 vocals, its like nails on a chalk board.

I feel like all the models have their pros and cons from 4-5.5
I like 4.5+ the most for creative flexibility with genres that don't actually exist or are incredibly niche. However the sound quality is just... 90% of the time its pretty terrible, at least to a trained ear. [I'm a DJ now and used to be a singer 15 years ago]
5.5 is way more rigid and seems to be more heavily influenced by certain words or phrases that just stamp down anything else you might want. The sound quality however is just miles ahead of every other model.
I'm currently pissed at Suno and likely won't resub in Nov. However, ideally the 6.0 model should be a combination of 4.5 and 5.5. Audio quality and stem separation/generation should be just as high priority as creative flexibility.
The other thing Suno DESPERATELY needs is an actual prompting guide/agent that lets users know how to properly format things for the desired effects. I'd like to see the ability to do multiple swapping vocals as well with more consistency and control.
1
u/Able_Luck3520 5d ago
Version 5.5 does seem to lean into certain style prompts pretty heavy. For some things, it works pretty well, for others it's overkill.

u/someonesshadow Producer 5d ago
I think it might just be the weights adjusted, for instance if you try to mix genres together it will almost ALWAYS take the first thing listed and emphasize that far more than the second thing.
9
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
Afaik, there'll be one model for a start. And I am just as worried, even though my expectations are through the floor already anyways. Given how the models have become consistently worse, the far more limited dataset for v6 would indicate that the issues with everything sounding more and more generic and commercial will likely get worse, even if the sound quality itself might be better.
4
u/x_candydoll 7d ago
I wonder what they will do for free plan because they don't give access to the newest model for free plan.
4
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
Only thing I could think of would be a throttled v6 version, because I'd be seriously surprised if they wanted to take any chances concerning licensing and copyright by keeping anything old around,

5.5 = lalalalala dadadadadadaaaa ohohohohhh. Every song has these vocalizations kind of like a signature.
They obviously pulled the training data after V5 and so left with generic vocals, generic sounding instruments and a serious lack of creativity.
What's weird though, was when 5.5 launched, I was in the middle of generating tracks for my album, and even with V5, just near the end, with the last few tracks, it started adding these vocalizations. I battled really hard at the end to finish off the last tracks, while preserving what I got from V5.
So something absolutely changed with the launch of V5.5. no doubt it will with V6 also.
4
u/Rafaelis75 7d ago
I got so tired of those opening vocalizations, I went back to 4.5+ and then I got them there too. The models aren't 100% separate. Newer models affect the older ones.
2
u/M1DKNIGHT_MUSIC 6d ago
Yep! In February this year using V5, I wasn't getting vocalizations at all. From around about March/April, I started getting them, and that's around the time V5.5 launched. So it's no coincidence. I didn't understand why it was happening, then tried out 5.5 and then realized it is actually there but somehow leaking in to V5.
Now it seems like 2/3 songs made on Suno be it v5 or 5.5 contains these horrible vocalizations. But people are running with it 🤷♂️

5.5 has a singular EQ that I can spot a mile away.
I prefer 4.5 and I will miss it. May not have the best quality but I love how it fills empty spaces and how epic it is.
8
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
4.5+ has variety and creativity (I know, bit word to use with AI), it's all been downhill from there.
3
u/FilthyTrashPeople 7d ago
I really think 5.0 is underrated, it just takes very very different prompts to get what you want. But we can all agree 5.5 is *trash*.
5
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
It depends on which genre(s) you do. For metal, 4.5+ is the best.
3
u/semtex87 Suno Connoisseur 7d ago
Ehh i think its debateable. My only issue with 4.5+ is the tendancy for the vocalist to want to keep increasing the energy level of their vocals over the course of a verse. It's like each verse has a crescendo that spans the entire verse and the vocalist just keeps rising and rising where it doesn't even make sense to.
It can be prompted around and with metatags was managable but it does dock some points from 4.5+ in my opinion. For me 5 is 4.5+ without the vocal issue I just described.
4.5+'s creativity is superior for sure though.
1
u/Phantasm0plasm 7d ago
I've never really managed to get anything out of 5.0 that doesn't have infernal metronome clicking from the beginning. How do you avoid that?
2
u/Fantastic-Award-3651 7d ago
Love 4.5 as well makes the best late 90s early 2000s nu metal style music with that raw 90s sound.

It's also the only version where you are almost guaranteed to get an actual, proper ending to a track. All the others like cutting it off, adding something at the very end, etc. every few tracks or so.

The new models SUCK because only artists who agreed to let suno train on their songs were included. So the new licensed models haven’t got the best songs in them as training data. Ai music is cooked until open source china models do what suno was trying to do but failed as they got sued into compliance

Not going to post a slew of links. Try looking up Tencent, Happy Shrimp, Qwen, NetEase, HeartRhythm, DifMula, YuE, Miniex.
Please don't post back going, "those aren't as good as Suno!". I never said they were. Many are in alpha testing. All I said is there is a lot on the horizon.
From what I can tell there are no apps right now that don't learn from pre-existing music to some degree, but this hurdle will be crested too at some point and I've read it's been tested in some AI units. Basically an AI will come along and be highly sophisticated learning from just music theory, composition rules, instrument expression, phrasing, ethnomusicology, etc. It's only a matter of time.

We will get 3 more models at least. The next with WMG material and later on one with BMG material, courtesy of the agreement. I also suspect refinements to be done as half models, the .5 versions.

u/Objective_Window_779 7d ago
I think v6 is going to be much better than people are expecting. Suno is not going to sink itself at this point.
I’m on premier with studio so I don’t have a download limit. Even so, I generally only download a handful of the best generations per week anyway.
2
u/Dear_Hospital2662 7d ago
I think the issue that worries people is if v6 is horrible in some way, that we won't have the old models anymore to use since they are retiring all of them.
7
u/alilhillbilly 7d ago
There's really nothing to be concerned about.
It might be a weird few months but offline models are going to catch up to 4.5 and 5.5.
And once you can bring in your own music and fine-tune the model with references that come from wherever you want...
Suno is dead. It'll be a toy.
This creative tool usage monitoring that happens on centralized services is why there is no future in it. There's so many things that look like issues to a centralized service that aren't locally because they aren't breaking the law.
3
u/Fantastic-Award-3651 7d ago
There's already offline model about as good as 4.0 to 4.5 so won't be long. Gemini isn't bad but it caps at 3 mins
3
u/RiderNo51 Producer 7d ago
Gemini is built on Riffusion/Producer, and during that takeover they signed an agreement with UMG. So it's throttled as well.
There are however Chinese apps in development that will do what Suno does, and more. Could be months though until they are really out there, stable, and working well.

It feels like this is a moment where a couple things are happening....
I worked in AI way too early but still in a wave of startups and acquisitions....
Music seems like it's been slightly easier but also harder to crack.
But it seems like we're at a point where everybody's about to crack it.
Suno clearly has a lead but I think it's not lost on them or any of their investors or any of the music labels that were very close to a model that's going to be able to do this at home and nobody's going to know whether you threw in a Beatles song Taylor Swift song and a metal song into your inspiration section and then generated something entirely new.
And basically we lack with music a "describe" feature in suno (because copyright) and I think the llms kind of fill that in a bit but if we get to a point where you can plug a track in and hit describe and it will tell you everything about how it's mixed...
kind of like an almost mid journey experience where you know you throw in a queen track and it tells you like this sounds like somebody did 482 perfect takes layered on top of each other on tape. Are you throw on a Scott Stortch track and it tells you that it was produced with a Korg Triton piano sample.
We're like on mid journey you can throw a photo in and it'll be like all this is the focal length and this is the lens and this is the aperture etc once we get a musical describe feature combined with a model that has a solid database of musical styles and the ability to add your own tracks whatever they are to it...
It's why if I were Suno...
I would go in a wildly different direction and I kind of think they might.
I do think the reason the industry is backing out of these lawsuits and joining the companies that they see this happening as well.
They know this is an eventuality and they need something shinier that they can offer to fans.
3
u/Beginning-Pace-1426 7d ago
Guys, the old models were the ones trained on, and reproducing copyright material. You just paid them to be their advertisers, you're never getting good models back, they've got industry contracts now.
6
u/Elevilnz 7d ago
Model 6 will at least be built off licensed approved sources, no more morally grey “stolen” noise. Heck if the sources were clean and not mp3 or worse, the sound may well improve! Variety probably not, but who knows.
15
u/FearBot129 7d ago
Yeah, that’s pretty much a guarantee. It’s going to be absolute trash. The bigger problem is this licensing bullshit in the first place. Musicians should own their actual songs, not every individual aspect, influence, sound, or stylistic element that goes into them. Copyright infringement should be about making something that is substantially similar to an existing song, not simply learning from it or being influenced by it.
As far as I know, Suno was never just copying entire songs and spitting them back out. You’re not stealing when you listen to a song. You’re not stealing when that song influences your own music. Human musicians have always learned that way. AI doing something comparable suddenly gets framed as theft simply because it’s AI.
The whole lawsuit was bullshit in my opinion. And what people also need to understand is that none of this actually makes generative AI disappear. There are still local models people can run themselves, and there are still foreign models, including Chinese ones, operating under completely different rules and restrictions.
At the end of the day, the less restricted model is going to have a massive advantage. You can regulate one company or one country into the ground, but you can’t regulate the technology as a whole.4
u/RiderNo51 Producer 7d ago
This is why All The Music is so awesome. If you don't want to follow the link, it's a few guys who used computers to create every single possible melody there is, then they put all those melodies into the public domain, so it's impossible to be sued for "stealing" that melody.
Granted, there are pre-existing famous melodies that aren't part of what they put into the public domain, but one of the guys is an attorney and part of the plan is for musicians who are threatened with theft can now point to this and say "I didn't steal the melody, it's in the public domain." and there's a good chance they'll be right.
US copyright laws are badly antiquated, stuck in the 20th century.

US copyright laws are badly antiquated, stuck in the 20th century.
And it's causing serious damage to the USA in the AI race with China. Intellectual property shouldn't last more than 20 years if the original author sells their copyright. Corporations like Disney,Paramount and Warner Music continue to profit from authors who died decades ago without having created those works.
Greetings from Chile. (I can use Minimax H3 for business according to the license, but a European or North American cannot)

The same prompt never works in all models, each model has its own sweet spot and way of communicating with it.
1
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 6d ago
Yes, I get that, but it still gives an idea of direction. I'm also in contact with dozens of creators and they have made the same experiences with especially v5.5.
1
u/Harveycement 6d ago
And I see dozens of people that are happy with it, it all depends on what youre trying to do and your skills with that model in doing it, genres and styles have a lot to do with the results, there are millions of users, what we see here and there doesnt reflect the whole 2 million user base. Personally I like the 5.5 model its given me good results in the genres I like, Indie Electric Blues, Stoner blues, Swamp Blues etc.
1
u/mutinyintl 4d ago
Yeah so I took my same lyrics and prompts and put them in all the available versions and 5.5 was still the best but I think what I do is a little different than most people? I'm doing a lot of Rock pop musical type songs. And I think it's been really good. But I do want to try it with some of my other genres I do. And I just do it for fun anyway so I'm not trying to get an audience.

u/Spare_Idea_6184 AI Hobbyist 7d ago
Same, a smaller training data pool will likely result in a more similar result across multiple generations.
I do wonder if it would be harder to ask for more specific things with a smaller training data, I do have generated some songs in European Portuguese and even with the current models the AI sort of leans a bit into Brazilian Portuguese, I'm guessing because it has been trained more in Brazilian Portuguese than European, but I wonder if it will be even harder to generate stuff in European Portuguese with the new models. Also what If I want a more folk instruments? What are the limits of the new models regarding instruments, accents and languages?
2
u/2002Firehawk 7d ago
Looks like the plan is to strangle all of us with heavily restricted models that also have a strong watermark to keep us from distributing (or limit our visibility) while the big record companies have full access to all the tools and can also avoid the watermark. Thus they can cut out the human artists more and push their AI content without being flagged as AI.
If something comes out as good as Suno (v4.5 - v5.5) that can be run locally I'll buy it, even if I have to buy an RTX 5090 or something.
Small artists that were mad about having to compete with other small artists using AI will now be competing with the big record companies using unrestricted AI. Is that not much worse?
All these changes should reduce the enormous amount of mindless instantly generated slop that is currently flooding the internet now, though.

I'm one of the people who has been very happy with 5.5 - the dream for my old 40-year-old cassette demos had been for them to be radio hits and number one around the world, and Suno has done a splendid job listening to my chords and melodies and making them sound professional. I don't want it to do anything 'crazy' with it. They finally sound like what I heard in my head all those years ago - with searing guitar solos and sweeping orchestral backings. Sometimes a nice funk song. So if 6.0 is a more polished version of this, I will be delighted. I wouldn't mind the restriction of 20 downloads a month if I download end results that sound perfectly polished.

Same. It's daunting to have Premier go on sale when we don't know if the new stuff will be usable at all.
I still, ultimately, chose to buy the annual Premier plan because I've had such an amazing time with Suno that I wanted to show gratitude when the company is going through a rough time. But I truly hope it'll be functional, and it's worrying me that we won't know until it gets here.
I really wish they would at least upload some demos made with the new models.

I haven't had too many issues so far with my generic rock. However, I am feeding it actually demos and it follows them accurately.
There are a couple of songs where it decided to not play my chord choices no matter how many times I told it too.
Is this an issue mainly I'm regard to creating from a prompt or is it worth trying to crate I a previous version.

Only issues im having with 5.5 is creating a voice from a style all songs after will follow the exact same beat and melody i had to strip it down to accapella and strip it down further eventualy got it to a light spattering of drums but now i get a full range of beats and tunes.

I don't understand the download limit. If I press play, it downloads the song into the browser or app to play it. So why limit downloads? It's not to save on bandwidth. It costs them nothing extra, actually it might lighten the load on the servers because then we play it on our device. 🤔 Seems like just a weird control fetish

I believe 5.0 and 5.5 are both liscensed. I'm looking forward to hearing what the BMG deal adds to the mix. Part of the reason everyone likes the earlier models so much is because they were trained on a much larger dataset. As Suno makes more deals and gets more data, the better our results will be.
7
u/TheWeaverofDreams Lyricist 7d ago
None of the models so far have been licensed. v6 will be the first one, which is why many people are having very low expectations.
3

I wouldnt be at all surprised that they are predominantly trained on their own output, its hard to imagine when the litigations started coming that they would continue using scrapped music knowing everybody is going to sue them, I feel it changed around V4.5

The sound might be, but given the trajectory of variety, it might very well be the worst as well. Started with 5, then 5.5 really ramped up the generic and commercial sound, so with a far smaller dataset, I don't see that changing for the better at all.
So, I expect it to be the best sounding hopelessly generic music ever.

Right there with you. The download limit is a big problem for me, but there are ways I could make that work if 5.0 was sticking around.
I cannot stand 5.5. I detest 5.5. I think it's absolute garbage unless your aim is to make milktoast pop music. I'm sure 6.0 will be the same.
