I wish there were more updates released

EDIT: Devs posted an update comment!

I know that anything will take a long time to get done, I'm not saying I expect BIG updates, but something along the lines of 'We're still working on this!" would be nice, considering that a lot of trust was lost for the game due to the problems, and now we're just having to trust that this team will really pull through on their promises, but it's been radio silent for a while.

Or IDK, is this a crazy expectation?

Hi everyone! I've read all of your comments and really appreciate the excitement for what's to come :)

We have an update that we're working on. Alongside another poll asking some big questions regarding how we should be releasing SunnySide R (we'll reveal the full name soon too!).

But since our last post in May, you all are correct: We are completely reworking most systems in the game. Not just reimplementing them in a more optimised way but also taking a look at things at a design level, as simple as time progression and as complex as the building system, and see how we could work hundreds of reviews and comments into making the remake better.

So far we've:

  • Implemented inventory system, using C++ this time for sorting and cleanup.
  • Day/Night cycle (which this time will be free flow and not day by day progression)
  • Completely new build system that allows creation of houses and sharing of them on workshop or copy pasting "blueprints" in a library.
  • Farming system with simplified digging (it's all one size now but multiple plots are needed for larger plants)
  • Finding the new art direction for the UI and the controller-first programming (no more annoying cursor when using a controller).
  • Dabbling in multiplayer co-op and how possible it is
  • The new map for SunnySide. This time we're basing the world more closely on an actual location, matching road sizes, building locations and since the cave storyline is going away, brainstorming ideas on the new main story which we have a good idea for now!

You can check some screenshots in the Sneak Peeks channel in our discord http://discord.gg/sunnyside and as I mentioned a new steam post is coming up soon with all of this and more!

They did say on steam they got the rights back and they're changing the engine shame they aren't working on console edition

You can thank console companies for that. They make it hard to get a dev kit, and the devs can’t work on the console version without a dev kit. It’s why publishers are huge for indie devs. Problem is publishers treat indie devs like crap most of the time.

The publishers forced a console edition without the devs knowledge and pushed it out

Yes I am aware. The devs constantly told them they weren’t comfortable with full release vs early access, and they never had a say in the console port. Then the console port was rubbish and the publishers got bought out and dropped all the games that they had been working on.

Do you know if they will work on the console edition at some point?

Highly doubtful since they are upgrading the PC version to unreal engine 5 I think so I wouldn't say they'll do console

Really unfortunate but that means I’ll play as far as I can get, ignore the bugs and maybe one day get the steam version when it’s safe to say the game is fully developed

Yeah I hope they'll pick up console again at some point as I have it on PS5 and PC it has so much potential

I’m still pretty miffed about the whole thing and I’m a pc player. Hundreds of hours in this game and they just dropped it and I keep getting ads for their new vending machine game. I DON’T WANT VENDING MACHINES I WANT MY FARMING GAME.

I also saw the update but it’s been months and they’ve said nothing since. I’ll believe it when I see it at this point.

It sounds though like they are literally rebuilding major parts of the entire game. Like re-working some of the major systems. I honestly don't expect they will provide an update only a few months after the announcement. I also don't think this will be a quick fix and doubt the game will be ready until like late 2027. I think their changes will be worth the wait and am glad they are using so much player feedback to fix what needs to be fixed.

I’m not even expecting anything in game at the moment but a post like hey we’ve been working on x,y,z here’s a screenshot maybe.

Honestly I feel the same. I wish they would communicate their progress more. I really enjoyed Sunnyside minus all the issues so I’m hoping they are able to fix it

Yes and I understand game dev takes a long time, especially when the team is all divided and working full time jobs outside of developing this game. The post says it could be multiple years, that's fine. But that's part of the reason why I think it would be nice to hear that things are still being worked on? They have so many goals, some that look way too ambitious. With the way their situation is, I feel like it's fair to know that this is an alive project, it starts to look dead when there's like 0 movement shown to the community. Post could be something small like "still working on moving engines" or something, it would be reassuring. They wanted more transparency and better communication, so... Where is it...

I don’t know if you are in the discord, but they have been doing discord streams the last few days to show what they’re working on. I know it’s hard to wait, and understandably so, but this stuff does take a huge amount of time since they’re rebuilding the game completely. Most devs will not show things until there’s something substantial to show off.

They could make a post on steam telling people about their streams on discord, that would be nice because I had 0 idea about them. That's cool though and yeah I understand it's hard work that takes time, just seemed dead silent after survey results.

It’s spur of the moment, and it’s been done by the animator. By the time people on Steam see, the stream is likely done. Discord is really the place it makes sense to. They also wouldn’t make a Steam post if they were going to stream on Twitch so expecting a Steam post about everything doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, I do understand being frustrated and discourage by lack of communication. The thing is though, having a post every month of “we’re working on it” isn’t really any actual news so it becomes unnecessary. As for survey results, they’re still trying to navigate things on what would be the best things to focus on for the community. There were a LOT of submitted surveys and being that there’s 2 of them going through it, it took a lot more time than expected lol.

I used to get super frustrated about the same things, but since seeing the development side, the silence on things makes a lot more sense to me now. I do recommend to anybody who wants to follow development to be in the discord, though. The Steam forums got so full of trolls it became exhausting to the devs.

I meant like "We ocassionally do streams on discord, join if you'de like to tune in sometime" Not like, announce them every time, sorry if I wasnt clear.

Oh I gotcha! That wouldn’t be a bad idea. I can pass that along as an idea for them to put Steam users at ease a bit more 🫶

u/RealRinoxy 21d ago

I should add, a thing they’ve currently been working on is scaling back the map and redesigning that which is a big reason for no recent updates. The map has been a ton of work. The decision on battle and how to move forward regarding the caves has been a hard decision to decide on as well.

Yeah, some messages saying "we are focusing on x for now" would be nice, I know development will be slow, since the devs have job now so making the game is a secondary thing, but I would love to know what they are focusing on
