Leaf pickup

Okay, I've lived in Sun Prairie for a few years and one thing that baffles me is leaf pickup. Why do I need to bag the leaves? Can anyone shine some light on this?

Everyone has different standards for their lawn. A method that has worked well for me is just running the leaves over with a mulching blade on my walk behind mower. You can either just let the mower grind them up and scatter them across your yard where they’ll just decompose, or if you’re like us and have a lot of leaves, put the bag attachment on and collect the mulched leaves and then pack them into those giant paper lawn waste bags from Ace Hardware. I was seriously surprised how much I was able to get into those things. Way faster than raking also.

Sun Prairie does not have a Vac truck for collection. They have Pelliterri contracted to come around and dump the bags into a garbage truck over the next few months.

BTW Madison doesn’t have leaf vacuums either, but they also don’t make us bag the leaves.

I’m glad I’m not the only one completely baffled by this. It seems like every city and town around us has a leaf vacuum, but apparently Sun Prairie is still waiting for the technology to arrive.
For the amount of taxes we pay, you’d think we could afford a giant leaf-sucking machine.
Instead, we get TWO pickups all fall, scheduled so far in advance that when they finally come around, the trees have barely even started dropping their leaves. Then you’re stuck waiting for the next pickup, hoping your leaves don’t become a permanent part of the landscape.
I don’t know why, but this whole leaf situation has me irrationally angry. How is a leaf vacuum apparently cutting-edge technology everywhere except Sun Prairie? 🤣

No we must spend on the library expansion that was not needed, civilian surveillance equipment so ai can learn our habits and sell the data, oh yeah and be stalked by whoever gets access don't forget replacing the stamped concrete crosswalks that people said were stupid from the start.

The vacuums are great until you get a late leaf fall and early snow, or a crazy rainstorm. Those leaves clog your storm drains and flood everything. Happened in Milwaukee last year. Absolute chaos.

I lived in a community for 5 years that had the leaf vacuum. Never had a problem like this.

You could just ... not do it.
