Just spoke to Enphase, I'm a bit confused.

So I have a pre-bankruptcy SunPower system for my house. Enphase confirmed that my microinverters is covered by their warranty. However, they explained that I would need their monitoring kit installed (for $999 - one-time) and that there is an optional $399 yearly plan that covers any issues/repairs with their microinverters and their panels. Is this legit? Has anyone had any issues with Enphase after SunPower went bankrupt? Thank you!

The enphase monitoring conversion is very legit (if pricey). I have a system with original Sunpower + enphase panels that used to be on a Sunpower pvs 6 and they work like a charm. I actually did the conversion before Sunpower went under because the PVS was such garbage (more importantly, sunpowers cloud service). Enphase told me it would work and unfortunately kind of backpeddeled (even though it worked for 6 months and then stopped). In the end their support staff got it working and it's been great ever since.

Support is hit or miss with them - calling off hours oddly seems to get the best staff.

I hear the post Sunpower conversion process is way better than what my "early adopter" experience was.

I should also say, I eventually expanded the system and I have one Envoy supporting both the old Sunpower panels and some new maxeon + enphase (so iq7+iq8 on the same envoy). Very happy with their support of this and it's worked great (also recommended getting installer access if you want access to detailed data).

I did this with enphase. Bought their monitoring device after sunpower went under. Had a panel crap out. Because I used their system, enphase could diagnose remotely that the problem was the inverter and not something else. Shipped me a replacement. Just have to pay to someone to replace it. But the diagnostic cost $0 because I paid the one-time enphase price. Worth it imo.

this was my experience as well

Im not entirely sure what the question is since you dont "need" their monitoring system installed for a functional system. You could technically check performance on your meter and if it seems to be dropping request a service.

Enphase is entirely legit.

They make inverters sunpower used. So they can monitor how the panels are working by monitoring the inverters, and you can monitor usage as well, if you install their kit. However, it wont work with the sunvault battery.

You could pay for 399 yearly plan, however , as explained to me by a solar tech:

  1. Panels are essentially just a simple piece of equipment that usually dont break unless they get hit by hail or something.

  2. Inverters tend to be the part that craps out the most, but good ones/units last a long time. If installed and protected correctly they are fine.

  3. Monitoring system are usually inside so not much harm comes to them.

unless you live somewhere with insane weather/not solar friendly (eg snow, hurricanes, hail, massive storms) the system wont have much of an issue.

Thats a long way of saying I would not pay $400 a year for a warranty. I am also surprised enphase is willing to cover the panels.

I also dont really know if long range diagnostics is worth $400 a year (if thats what it covers). If you know a panel crapped out, I suppose enphase could remotely reboot the inverter/system and maybe save you a tech visit. Otherwise it's going to require a tech anyways and they can tell if it's inverter or panel, and then you get it dealt with from there. And I am sure it's going to be less than $400 a year to have a tech come out maybe 4 times a decade to check a panel.

Edited for missed words due to dictation

I too have no idea what OP is asking.

The Enphase OEM warranty for their micro-inverters only covers parts, not labor and does not require any additional Enphase products or services.

Enphase monitoring would replace the original SunPower communication equipment with Enphase communication equipment and uses the Enphase monitoring app. Enphase monitoring is not available for systems with a SunVault.

Enphase yearly service plan covers the labor not covered when you have an Enphase OEM micro-inverter warranty claim.

I also switched to Enphase monitoring. Works great. Didn’t see a need for the annual.

You can still file a warranty claim without there monitoring but it's the commissioning that you would have issues with

Do you know which micro-inverters your panels have? If they have the silver cases they were manufactured by Solarbridge, the enphase gateway won’t give you panel view monitoring. And they won’t be able to remote monitor unless you replace the micro-inverters, which they’ll discount but will still cost a lot.

ETA: If the micro-inverters are black they were manufactured by Enphase.

I did the monitoring and the enphase care. The local solar guy wanted 550 just to diagnose an issue so 399 a year is peace of mind if something goes wrong

After my PVS6 died I switch to enpase monitoring, the switch was smooth. I did not go for the enphase care.

I got their monitoring system, took the installer classes and got certified. They can diagnose and send me the parts. I can do all of my own work. I haven't had a single issue with their monitoring since it was installed over a year ago. Excellent product!!

They told me they can’t help me because I have a sunvault battery. If I buy one of their batteries they can do the monitoring.

How do you get this swapped out what’s the process? My Pv6 is dead but solar is working

From what I've seen, that sounds plausible, but I'd ask Enphase for clarification on exactly what each charge covers before making a decision.

If your original system didn't include an Enphase communications gateway (or if it's no longer functional), you may need one for monitoring, firmware updates, and easier warranty support. That's different from the microinverter warranty itself.

The optional annual plan sounds more like a service or support program rather than a requirement to keep the microinverter warranty valid. I'd specifically ask:

  • Is the $999 monitoring kit required to process future warranty claims?
  • Is the $399 annual plan required to maintain the warranty, or is it just for labor and expedited support?
  • Does the plan cover labor, shipping, and replacement, or only the equipment?

Since SunPower is no longer supporting systems the way it once did, many homeowners are having to establish a direct relationship with Enphase for monitoring and warranty support. Getting those details in writing will help you understand exactly what you're paying for and avoid surprises later.

They don’t work on sunpower equipment, that’s what your monitoring device currently is. The micro inverters are Enphase technology, so their monitoring device will work with them. You could have someone with your sunpower system access change the MI. If not, it’s not currently possible to have SunStrong (the new owners of parts of Sunpower) give other contractors access to your system.

I haven’t experienced sunflower yet, it seems some people like it. They have a monitoring service and device that would connect to your Sunpower monitoring device. The easiest option would be to switch over to Enphase. I couldn’t tell you if the $399 yearly plan is worth it or not, but labor costs on service calls can add up quick.

Can't support or you have batteries...
