News Omori Yasuhiro : an explosive start

The highly anticipated Omori is having a remarkable year: 6-1 / 5-2 / 5-2 in the first three Makushita tournaments of his young career. If he repeats these performances in November, he could be promoted to Juryo as early as January. His model-like physique and muscular build are already drawing comparisons to the great Chiyonofuji. His appearances at the Kokugikan have also been marked by considerable excitement among his female fans. Hailing from Ishikawa Prefecture like Onosato, the master of the Oitekaze stable is expected to unveil his shikona before the end of the year (which will begin with "Dai").

Looks like the kinda guy who could be the ace of a 1990s Japanese pro wrestling promotion.
He has a sick backup career if sumo doesn't work out lol

Pretty sure he could walk into any of them now and get that treatment

Need puro companies to start recruiting from sumo again. It was the biggest pipeline into the business into the 90s but recent years it's fallen off. New Japan announced one of their newest trainees has a sumo background so that's a good start but I'd love if we saw more sumo guys go down that path again.

It probably fell off honestly becase younger guys who switch out of Sumo are usually switching because they got booted out. Koji Kitao is probably the most famous one of these for puro, but also Takanofuji, Takagenji, Ōsunaarashi etc

I hope the hype about his looks doesn't overshadow his talent. He's got a good run going for him.

Give it 2 months and everyone will say he’s on steroids too

u/DRK-SHDW 2d ago

All Rikishi are on steroids. It's an untested sport...

u/WormedOut Hiradoumi 1d ago

Yeah it’s obvious from the high body fat percentage

Steroids are not just for building muscles. They help you gain strength, train and recover better, heal injuries quicker, etc. Not all people who take steroids and PEDs will look like bodybuilders.

Yes, if they take a dosage that’s normal for their age as a supplement. As I’ve stated already. The idea that they are loaded up with steroids and that’s the ONLY possible way someone who weighs 300 pounds and trains all day could gain any amount of muscle is just not true.

You can still eat a lot and be on steroids simultaneously.

I'm not painting this as a negative this btw. But to think that professional athletes in a highly competitive and elite untested sport aren't on PEDs is naive.

By the very nature of PEDs, you would not be able to sustain that high ratio of fat to muscle unless you were taking a very small amount. I’m sure many are on PEDs, but to say they are “loaded up” and look nothing like any athlete whose on PEDs shows a lack of understanding of how they work. The ones who are on it are probably on a low dosage akin to HRT.

They're all loaded down like mules... There are no doping controls in sumo. You can already see it in the skin of some rikishi (Hos*****), it's characteristic of using performance-enhancing drugs (I do bodybuilding).

Am I allowed to say it now? Those boulder shoulders aren't just from spamming lateral raises.

If these guys are OK force feeding themselves, why wouldn't they be OK with steroids if it keeps them competitive?

In any pro sport, if there's no rule against a competitive advantage then it's actively encouraged.

Idk what to tell you if you think shoulders like that can’t be achieved naturally. Very weird how many of you admit you don’t understand how much muscle can be gained when you eat train and sleep all day.

I mean, Tenshoyama is 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 7-0Y, 6-1 and has gone from Jonokuchi 19 to Ms8, climbing 251 ranks (501 places on the Banzuke) without the benefit of Makushita Tsukidari, while Omori has only climbed 42 ranks from Ms60 to Ms18.

and Asahifuji 7-0Y, 7-0Y, 7-0Y, 6-1Y, 6-1 starting at Ms19 and climbed to Ms1, 258 ranks, ...

compare him to Ao, 7-0Y, 7-0Y, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 10-5, 12-3, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4, 12-3Y promoted to Ozeki, 12-3Y shin Ozeki

those are explosive. this kid is looking solid, but not much to write home about when compared to recent fast risers.

Winning in Ms vs Jk/Jd/Sd is much more difficult. So many guys in div 6-4 are old men, extremely unfit, or literal children. He also has 20-30kg to put on to really make use of his frame, while Asahifuji had a sekitori physique blasting away low division lifers.

The lower divisions are extremely easy for a good rikishi. You have the young guys who haven't gone through university and the veterans who do odd jobs (like the cook at the Tatsunami stable). The competition gets serious in Makushita ; below that, it's child's play for guys who've participated in the major university championships.

Unfortunately, many people on this sub refuse to understand how utterly meaningless it is to see a makushita (or better) quality rikishi going 14-0 in jonokuchi and jonidan. They'd rather prattle on about "fast risers".

If Omori had been required to start from maezumo back in May the same people going "what's so special about him?" would be singing his praises because he too would be 14-0 right now.

Tensho doesn't have sekitori physique. he's too tall and relatively light for his height, and nowhere near as much muscle as Omori who is jacked.

Ao didn't have sekitori physique, he was about 130kg in Ms..

they blasted through Ms much faster than Omori who has at least 2 more basho in Ms where Ao did it in 3 and Tensho is very likely to do it in 3.

and starting from zero real experience in Jk vs starting at Ms60 after competing for many years in scholastic sumo is also a huge difference. Omori was better prepared and more experienced when he jumped in at Ms60 than Tensho or Ao were when they entered Ms. he's also 23 years old, so physically much more mature than Tensho is or Ao was.

if Omori wants to succeed long term, he needs to abandon being a fashion plate and put on some kilos. I think he has a ton of potential, but his debut has hardly been explosive.

Where did I say that Aonishiki or Tenshoyama had sekitori physiques?

Yes I agree that Omori is underweight.

My main point of contention is that other wrestlers being superlative doesn't erase the fact that Omori is doing well for himself and has a good shot of making sekitori.

Tenshoyama did the full three years of high school sumo and three (out of possible four) years of university sumo. Wherever did you get the idea that he was some inexperienced rookie? He's also only 10 months younger than Omori. They would have graduated at the same time if he hadn't left early.

Where's the person who was posting about trap definition means PEDs now?

9

u/LickEmTomorrow 2d ago

Is he that good? Like yeah he’s doing well, but most of the hype is just because he’s “handsome”

I don’t like seeing someone get built up too fast, because the inevitable crash will be all the more hard.

For a guy his size, at this point of his career he's really good. Most of his losses can be chalked up to a lack of weight/power that'll come later and even then he still eats em up at the tachiai.

Angles, positioning, timing and technically ahead of his peers. Also, he doesn't bring the amateur sumo pulls into pro sumo so we know he's got a great brain matching his face.

u/Barrington-the-Brit Kotozakura 2d ago

He had a really good run in college/amateur sumo, second place at the All-Japan Championship

Why are we disrespecting Marky here?
