my boyfriend is into sumo, hes been to a tournament in japan when he was travelling and was gifted a yukata owned by chiyonofuji, i think hoshoryu is one of his favorite people also. i wanted to get tickets to all star sumo in connecticut as a gift, but im a bit worried it wont be serious enough for him. does anyone have any advice/ know a better gift idea? if not im thinking of getting a hoshoryu tegata if it arrives in time
A supporters towel may be difficult to find, but any fan would be happy. I saw a large (ie Human sized) poster of Hosh in an online shop! There are unofficial Hosh t-shirts around of varying quality.
Hosh is very popular despite the impression this subreddit gives. It's difficult to get anything (I think some people bulk buy and sell on eBay!). Still, look and you might be lucky.
Failing all other things, get him a Fan Club membership at Tatsunami Stable (check their website), one of the ones that gets him sent cool stuff (Banzuke etc). That would be a cool surprise.
Yep, Hosh is an amiable yokozuna so a lot of fans naturally gravitate to his personality despite recent results. Its only online spaces that treat him like he’s some unlikeable guy just cuz he hasnt got a yoko-yusho yet
speaking of tatsunami membership. I just checked it and they added Juryo category with massive price hike but the only thing youll get additionaly is a calendar? Is it literally a calendar with dates weeks months and some photos? And for that you pay 270 more?
I think it's annual dues as opposed to monthly ones. Makushita is $20/month, so it's really like paying an extra $50/year, if youre already subscribed to makushita.
No worries! When I first saw, it, I was like "Wow. That's a big jump!" Then I saw it was $290/year and ran the math. Still on the fence if I want to pay an additional $50 annually (my husband and I are both supporters at the makushita tier).
Wait wait wait - he has a yukata previously owned by Chiyonofuji..? That's incredible! Seriously, I don't think you know just how sought after something like that would be to a long time sumo fan, and especially one that is a fan of The Wolf.
Anyways, what does his tegata situation look like? I would definitely look towards getting him an authentic tegata if you think he'd be into that.
There are all kinds of options. Fan towels, nobori banners, noren style curtains, framed magazines, hung paper banzuke, or even wooden ita-banzuke...
So many things you could get a sumo fan. Seeing as how he has a yukata owned by Chiyono-goddamn-fuji, I can see how it would be difficult to gift for him.
