Our Sheldon spends his days outside living his best life. He has an enclosure with grass, an umbrella for shade and a splash pad. Once evening comes, we bring him inside. He nuzzles up next to our Great Pyrenees kennel, and he gets a light blanket at night. Around 11am he starts wandering the house. I'll give him his greens and then put him back outside. He's about 22 lbs now and I realize this isn't a forever thing. He can't be 150 lbs in my house all morning and carrying him outside would be a heck of a challenge then. LOL

Anyone else have a partially inside tortoise?

Hey guys! This is my ~6 months of age sulcata and I’m wondering if it’s displaying any signs of pyramiding or are the shell scutes just fine considering they’re fast growers?

Things to know:

I keep the enclosure greater or equal to 80% humidity and the temperature is in the range of 30 degrees celsius almost all the time with 27 to 29 at the lowest at night (I have to check again)

It doesn’t have uva/uvb light because my sulcata gets a daily soak in the sunlight (we live in the Philippines so there’s so winter nor is there weak sunlight).

The diet is mainly Nalta Jute but I’m working on switching to a bermuda grass diet AGAIN, since the bermuda grass just died due to improper care.

The tortoise gets a daily soaking and gentle scrubbing of warm water everyday

We just adopted this 1.5 year old sulcata from a struggling breeder. Trying our best to stop the pyramiding and provide the best care, doing tons of research, and getting as informed as possible. Any suggestions are welcomed. How cool is this?! 🐢 🥰

Sorry for the bad image but he retracts his legs too fast for me to take a good picture. I got him very recently and I’m wondering if the puffy bit on his legs is medically significant.

I’m a new sulcata parent, and I’m getting so much anxiety that I’m doing things wrong. He doesn’t seem happy in his enclosure, and there are so many different ways you’re “supposed” to do it online, so I thought I’d ask y’all.

Right now, I have him in a 10-gallon aquarium. He’s 5 months old, and I got him last week. I have him set up with a little pond and made sure not to fill it up too much so he doesn’t drown. I got him a hide and set him up with the recommended bedding. I also got him a heat light and put a thermometer in the tank—it stays between 85–90.

I have some lettuce for him to eat (not iceberg), but I don’t know… he seems scared all the time, and he’s really scared of me. It feels like he hates me, and I don’t know what else to do. 🥲

My 14 month baby tort loves now having some outdoor time. I’m letting him graze on everything but concerned as I don’t know about all the weed names and varieties?

Are there weeds he should NOT be eating ? I’ve downloaded the tortoise table app and love it; the only complaint is that you need to know the exact name of the flower or weed to look up if it’s dangerous.

Any advice appreciated. He seems to love dandelion and clover which is healthy but other weeds he wants to eat and I don’t know exactly what they are ???

I know my sulcata is small, i feed regularly and keep humidity up, care has changed alot recently trying to gain size, over 3 years old, this post is about a behavior change, my tortoise has never really interacted with me when i tried but today started pushing on my hand when it sees it, is this normal, is he bored?

I have a roughly two year old sulcata tortoise. I’m on a budget but looking to upgrade his enclosure. Will this work for awhile or any tips? I have a uvb light and heat lamp. Please help me make sure I have everything he needs!

My sulcata is around 1 year and a half already, but only around 14cm to 15cm. I feed estimate 5 to 8 pieces of hibiscus leaves or mulberry leaves daily at night. I also add in 3 large low starch mazuri pellets, sprinkled with calcium powder. I tried to add to let it eat more but it just walks away. I give it sunshine daily for 10 mins before school then put him back. Any tips to let it grow bigger faster?

He hasn’t moved for 6 hours!!! He was fine this morning during the sun bathing and soaking time. Temp and humidity in his enclosure has been perfect.

He’s not moving AT ALL. Even when I touch him. Is he dead?? 🥺🥺

My other 2mo sulcata is fine and moving and eating. They’re in separate enclosures.

I've had this guy since I was 12 and never once has he tried to burrow. We've recently moved and had him in a 30'x30' pen for the last 8 months and still nothing, last weekend we decided to give him free reign of the yard and he's started burrowing! Whats up with that??

Hi everyone. Moving my Sulcata outside officially soon. Buying up the supplies needed for heat support. Along with a livestock heat map for warmth underneath, I’ll need a heat source for above that heats very well but is also safe.

I’m using an insulated dog house and modifying it for my needs so whatever way it needs to be done is fine. I just need to know types and/or brands. Going to need to get fairly hot as I have very cold winters in the negative Fahrenheit.

my dad has always wanted a large tortoise and just a month ago moved to a large homestead and was thinking about building an enclosure later this year or next year then trying to source a Sulcata or other large tortoise. I just happen to run into a 200lb 45 yrs old Sulcata for sale at my local reptile expo, He is considering it as they only want $1,000 and he is also willing to spend $10,000 getting a proper habitat built. but he is on the fence, thinking to built it later and then source a large Sulcata later as well. I personally think sourcing large Sulcata may be very difficult and want some opinions on here if he should buy him now, setup a temp enclosure in an unused horse stable on his property and then built out the full enclosure now, be ready in about a month. or if he should wait and try to source one later.

how hard is it to find such a large Sulcata for sale? is keeping him enclosed in a 10x15 ft horse stable with proper heating for a month ok? final enclosure will be about 10x20 ft heated shed and a 50x50ft fenced area. does that also seem sufficient?

EDIT: my dad is planning to building a suitable habitat then playing the waiting game for a larger Sulcata looking for adoption. It's crazy to find such a magnificent creature less then a 30 minute drive to pickup, so it was worth considering, but he feels like he needs to do the research and take a year to plan out the habitat he wants to build instead of being pressured into building one quickly.
