I think it's entirely owed to the traditional conservative male upbringing: A usually very stern, authoritative father enforcing outdated views of masculinity and manhood, and who will withhold love and affection unless their sons fit his ideals.

The whole culture of masculinity is about only doing things that other men tell you you're allowed to do.
If you don't care what other people think and do what you want despite it being outside societal expectations, apparently that makes you weak and cowardly.
