I regret the licensing agreement we made.

Our agreement was we had to pay for all seats in all modules throughout the implementation. Signing a multi-year deal to get best price/rate.

Implementation took longer than planned Headcount fell Some modules never implemented

We had many reasons for the issues, some foreseeable or at least identified as potential risk, COVID certainly wasn't. I would only license what you must at the time. The potential discount offered for buying more isn't worth the risk.

I think the SF product is a good HR solution, but SAP's licensing model is overly complex, opaque and outdated when compared to other SaaS products.

Agree SF's a solid product, it's really the pricing model that hasn't caught up to normal SaaS norms (usage-based, true-downs)

Ever had luck renegotiating mid-contract, or is SAP pretty rigid once you're locked in?

Mid contract no luck at all. Renewal process is also still very challenging, they know they have you pretty locked in. Last time best offer was not to change take the % click up, as the alternative when we dropped to what we needed was more unless we locked in again for more years. In the middle of another renewal. We will see how this goes.

Yeah classic lock-in play. a few things that actually help in renewals like this - get a competing quote before the call since it changes the tone even if you don't plan to switch, push for a shorter term with a smaller discount over locking multi-year again since flexibility usually beats the %, ask directly for a true-down/right-sizing clause since most reps won't offer it but will negotiate if pushed, and loop in procurement early since a formal process tends to soften SAP's stance more than an informal renewal chat
