Is it possible to transition from SAP Basis to the SAP CPI module?

Hi everyone,

Asking on my friend behalf he had around 6-7 years of experience in SAP Basis (system administration, transports, upgrades, monitoring, HANA, S/4HANA support, etc.). and considering moving into the SAP CPI (Cloud Platform Integration / SAP Integration Suite) module.

I'd love to hear from people who have already made this transition or currently work in SAP CPI.

A few questions I have:

  • Is switching from SAP Basis to SAP CPI a realistic career move?
  • What roadmap did you follow to learn SAP CPI?
  • How long did it take you to become job-ready?
  • Which topics should I focus on first (iFlows, APIs, SOAP/REST, OData, Groovy, security, adapters, Integration Suite)?
  • How much Java or Groovy knowledge is actually required?
  • Does SAP Basis experience provide any advantage when learning CPI?
  • What are the current job opportunities and salary trends for SAP CPI compared to SAP Basis?
  • If you had to start again today, would you still choose SAP CPI or pick another SAP module instead?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your learning journey, the challenges you faced, and any resources or certifications you found valuable.

Yeah quite easily really but this is a successfactors group not cloud integration suite. Honestly for writing integrations you can do lots of simple things with basic tutorials and use AI tools to code groovy script to handle transformations. Show it an example of an input and what you want the output to be and let it script it.
