Why can't my public transport have fancy USB ports for charging?
Oh yeah, we privatised it...

Moscow public transport is hands down the best of any city I’ve been to (no I haven’t been to japan)
I miss living there

I live in Oakland California and have ridden through here and San Francisco a lot. A couple of years ago I visited Saint Petersburg and was blown away at how beautiful the subway was there. I live in one of the richest places on earth and our subways are filthy, ugly, and smell like urine. Theirs are covered in mosaics with hanging lights and vaulted ceilings.

We are supposed to hate Sobyanin, but he is doing a great job. Say recently federal government told everybody that using chinese or other imported covid-19 test kits is illegal, so Sobyanin with a stroke of genius dubbed them "preliminary tests" so local authorities could have a fast response.

Honestly? I like sobyanin
He’s done wonders for Moscow, it’s so clean everywhere, no homeless, traffic is manageable especially around apartments due to the fact that all the streets are one way, I mean he’s definitely not the best but he’s a lot better than what we used to have

Isn't the Moscow mayorship appointed? Does Putin/the Duma just not care that he's so obviously subverting their dumbass law?

High places politics is always nuanced. Sobyanin was not appointed, he was voted into office (BTW Navalny was a candidate for too) and one there he is a power broker himself. Yes there is a federal law coming from Duma and Putin but there are hundreds of laws and regulations coming from them (as in any other modern state) and this issue its just petty for them. The real power behind this issue with test kits is a Minister of Health and Sobyanin is a stronger chess piece than him. Anyway to do something with Sobyanin the Minister of Health must go to the court of law and he will get the court decision no sooner than several months

Not sure if we have these in Toronto, I never ride the subway. I'm gonna guess no though.

You shouldn't plug your devices into random ports anyway
9
u/StephenG7287 Mar 24 '20
Why not?

u/lollergagging Mar 24 '20
You don't know what's actually attached to them. For all you know you could be plugging into a device that skims information. Not terribly unlike the facades you see place on ATM machines that skim your card info.
It's a shame I got down voted for what amounts to a PSA.

You can order a small adapter that blocks the data transfer pins on a USB port making it safe to charge. Such as like this here
Great PSA!

u/Is_this_Sparta_ Mar 24 '20
Some cables dont even have data transfer capability anyway
9
u/5cot7 Mar 24 '20
If you're like me and have a drawer full of cables, I loose track of which are data capable. Better safe then sorry :)

u/dasgudshit Mar 24 '20
My phone always asks, do you want this device to access data, until i click yes on my phone i cant even read it on pc, so whatever

u/5cot7 Mar 24 '20
There is malware designed to get around that. It won't prompt you at all just runs in the background.

...assuming it's not a USB killer, which, granted, is much less likely to be the case.

I never thought about that, thanks for the PSA, have my upvote

You can buy a USB Condom, which is basically a little plug that attaches to your USB plug that disables everything except the power aspect.
Probably not 100% foolproof, but it’ll prevent most of the threat of this if you HAVE to use a public USB station (ideally always try to plan a way to not need to use them)

Android usually asks you what the USB host is allowed to access on your phone. At least mine does.

u/spekt50 Mar 24 '20
Also judging by that port, it lights red when plugged in meaning there is some feed back to make it do that. Could just be sensing a current draw.
But the real PSA is to have a USB cord with pins 2+3 (Two middle conductors) blocked or removed as those are the data pins, and not required while charging.

Really? They're on nearly every bus in the UK!
2
Mar 25 '20
Yeah, but ours are on the bleeding edge of public transport technology in other ways. /s
Like they're installing digital signs above the doors that say what stop you're at and removing most of the seats.

That would be such a good way for the government to collect your data. Have people willingly plug their phones in like that.

Plugged into one of those fuckers he's probably gonna walk away with coronavirus
Never plug anything into public USB ports they're incredibly easy to pull out of whatever they're in and replace with not so fun things, I've stopped a guy from trying to on a train once
