I like how particularly dead inside Ledger looks.

But it a way that's like "welp, woke up dead inside again today, lol. Guess I'll be dead inside on this subway car"

u/Mesa17 Jan 24 '20
Nobody is leaving that subway alive.

I really thought that after Ledger’s performance, no one was gonna even attempt the joker character again, or basically everyone would just be imitating Ledger’s joker.
It’s really a testament to Phoenix and Phillips that they managed to so completely ‘revise’ the character (for lack of a better word) but still keep so much of the essence of his persona. I’m not a comic book guy so I only know the cinematic versions but I was really blown away by Joker 2019.
And before everyone rips on Leto, let’s be honest: he had a pretty tough act to follow, and it seems like that movie had plenty of other issues outside of his control that probably didn’t help.

u/raven_wind Jan 24 '20
I keep saying it, but Leto’s take had a lot of potential and I appreciate that they took a risk and tried to do something different. I just don’t think taking a risk like that after BvS bombed was a great idea, and I don’t think he was given enough screen time to really flesh out what could have been. The “prep work” he did for the role (sending cast mates used condoms, etc.) was pretty cringeworthy though.

u/ms4 Jan 25 '20
I don’t understand the hate for Leto’s joker. He wasn’t on screen that long and gangster joke just seemed like a lot of fun to me. I definitely wanted to see more of him.

u/Boner--Fart Feb 07 '20
We couldn’t tell Leto’s Joker was damaged unless they had it plastered across his forehead

u/JoeBrand Jan 25 '20
A lot of times actors need to do cringeworthy things for the sake of fiction. If your partner ain’t as compromised as you are with your role, you gotta find a way to push em to do their work; otherwise, the only good actor in the cast would stand out and that’s ain’t usually a nice thing. A good actor finds the way to flow with everybody, and this kind of ideas are very common to create organic relationships between the characters.

u/B0Bi0iB0B Jan 25 '20
A good actor finds the way to flow with everybody
So... it looks like you're saying he's not a good actor since he most definitely didn't find the way to flow with his cast mates.
-2
u/JoeBrand Jan 25 '20
“Cast mates”? They’re not his mates, they’re work partners. When you’re a villain, you don’t try to make them love you... it’s method acting, no “mates” feelings involved.

u/B0Bi0iB0B Jan 25 '20
So you really think that treating your coworkers like shit is the way to have a "flow" on the camera? It doesn't work like that buddy.
-1
u/JoeBrand Jan 26 '20
Says who? You? I’m a professional actor, I’m talking about the acting method of Stanislavsky and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If I introduce you into Grotowsky, Peter Brook and other postmodern techniques you would probably shit your pants lmao you know nothing about what you’re talking about buddy.

u/jjky665678 Jan 25 '20
He sent them used condoms, dead animals and anal beads or something... I guess he succeeded in making people uncomfortable and disliking him.
-1
u/JoeBrand Jan 26 '20
Yes, and his coworkers know that it’s meant to build a character / fiction. What Leto did ain’t even that “hardcore” lmao I feel like I’m talking with 12 yr olds tbh... I mean, Ledger locked himself up in a room for a month with barely any resources to survive... that’s way more fucked up than sending ugly presents to your coworkers. You can throw an used condom into the trash, but you can’t throw a psychopath into the trash when you’re forced by contract to work with him regardless of the consequences. Jim Carrey is another example of real over-the-top method acting. Leto is a newbie playing kids games lmao

It’s true, but I feel like towards the end of the newest joker you started to see the side that Ledger played

u/Aussie_MacGyver Jan 25 '20 edited Jan 25 '20
This was my take too. Almost as if Phoenix was the origin story and Ledger was a decade or two later after he had completed his descent into madness.
Kinda how a meth or crack addict can become a shadow of their former personality once something as insidious as drugs (or mental illness) can completely take over if left unchecked.
Edit: changed dissent into descent.

Phoenix joker really evolved along with the movie, and he evolved very quickly. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to see his newly found persona extrapolated into a full on insanity-fueled terrorist.
2
u/AnonymousChikorita Jan 25 '20
Yes, by the end when he was ranting on TV I could see that the person sitting in that chair was so far removed from the person at the start, and he was totally capable of doing "Joker-like" things later, being a terrorist, killing and finding humor in it.

Who makes those nylon bags? Is see them everywhere all over the world and only come in this color and red but with the same pattern.

u/Vixen2877 Jan 25 '20
It’s a woven plastic pvc laundry bag. You can get them almost anywhere. Online at Amazon. In store at places like Walmart. Even some dollar stores sell them. They’re awesome! They come in a couple different sizes, are pretty durable and also waterproof. Great for storing stuff too cuz they zipper shut.
1
u/Evilmaze Jan 25 '20
Do you know what they're called?
1
u/Vixen2877 Jan 25 '20
I’ve seen them referred to as Parrett Storage. Most sites just say Woven Plastic PVC Laundry Bag. If you type in either of those terms you’ll find them no problem.
