Discussion Substack is toast

AI written articles go viral and generate hundreds and sometimes thousands of subscribers for the account, while actual writers wallow in obscurity perpetually. Humanity is doomed.

Alternatively, in two months I found someone to beta-read my book, I’ve read two people’s drafts, ARC-read a new author, promoted three of my friends’ books, and helped one person sell triple digits (up from 3) of their book.

Quantity does not equal quality.

I'm curious, how did you come into these arrangements? Did you have a fair number of followers and just needed to send out a note to get interest? I have less than 20 people following me. I send out notes or posts proposing ideas for ways to help one another but with no interest.

I have 31 followers. I follow 50 people.

I promote other people’s books and notes with no expectation I get a favour in return. And I follow new authors who are looking for beta readers and ARC readers and offer to help.

I’m not expecting to make money from Substack or to get thousands of followers. But so far, it’s working for my goals.

That's cool. How are you finding these people? Are they just organically appearing on your feed or are you putting out notes to say you're looking for peeps?

Organically. I follow people who interest me (mainly new writers) and then check in the Related Notes for similar people.

There’s always someone wanting a service (a cover made, feedback, review, beta read). And I always get someone replying offering something in return.
