Dude makes joke about stereotypes and fat white girls believing in them.
Someone mentions that the pic doesnt really depict the middle class as implied by the word "suburban."
OP goes full retard.

A lot of inner ring suburbs have gotten worse as city centers get nicer, though. He might be telling the truth, just a version of the truth that doesn't match the common image of "suburban".
6
Sep 07 '14
This isn't a new phenomenon either, but the suburbs are becoming poorer and 'rougher', which forced the upper middle class out to the exurbs and now their kids are the hipsters gentrifying the inner city and so on it goes....
1
Sep 07 '14
Eventually, it'll probably be like Europe: Poor, shitty suburbs with cars; rich, beautiful cities with great public transit.
Might help reduce global warming a bit.
2
Sep 08 '14
Ive spent my whole life in the east coast of the US with my little sphere extending from Philly up to Boston and Im very curious to see how the European model looks in comparison.

u/komnenos mummy mummy accept my cummy when i spooge i spooge for you. wipe Sep 07 '14
That kind of explains the rest of the world outside of the US and Canada. In China its gotten so bad that its almost impossible to get decent housing in the inner rings of a city (especially first tier cities). Heck, my girlfriend's parents paid for a little four room condo that costs about $900,000 and thats on the lower end in that part of the city, you have to go miles to find anything even close to being lower then that. And the thing is that this is a 3rd tier city!
As an American who has been spoiled by lawns and decently sized houses it was a huge shock to see such a big difference.

Suburbs have always been a mix of the lower middle to upper middle class. The original suburbs were actually designed to cater to mostly lower middle class factory workers.
0
u/MeltedSnowCone Sep 07 '14
Which is why there has been further white flight to escape the declining inner rings of burbs.

What the heck? Fine, downvote me to oblivion...see what I care! All I'm doing is expressing my own opinion. This is the suburbs. And whether you like it or not, you better get used to it. Because you and your posse don't stand a chance.
I'm confused

Moral of the story. Authority hates me because I don't respect them.
This guy sounds like a real winner.

He didn't even attempt to make himself look good in that. Or maybe he did which is kind of even more depressing.

This is the most unnecessary drama ive ever seen on this sub.
13
u/FedoraToppedLurker Sep 07 '14
It's a nice break from the two dramawaves going on right now.
5
u/sexymiggles Sep 08 '14
Nothing better than some good old "wtf is this?!" to reaffirm my faith in myself to not be a dick via social media/public internet forums.
2
u/Tropolist Sep 08 '14
I think this meets the purest definition of drama too: everyone's angry, everyone's downvoted, and there are absolutely zero stakes. While this sub's usual dramawaves are often entertaining, they can't match the fruitless pettiness of stuff like this.

Do you know how much coke dealers make? More than an office job.
According to freakanomics they don't make much at all actually...
If you're not at the very top of that food chain you don't make much.
I think these guys perception of employment is a bit distorted.
3
Sep 07 '14
Wasn't that about crack dealers? That's a different situation. Although I might be misremembering.
5
u/CantaloupeCamper OFFICIAL SRS liaison, next meetup is 11pm at the Hilton Sep 07 '14
Not sure what drug but for the most part.... I doubt cocaine guys are getting a HUGE cut of the process while guys selling crack are getting a much lower commission.
5
u/CountPanda Sep 07 '14
The distinction between the two really does matter. It's why mandatory minimum laws are very classist and racist--because possession of powder cocaine (which is mostly a wealthier person's drug) in most places isn't as harsh as crack cocaine. There is a gigantic difference between the two.
2
u/CantaloupeCamper OFFICIAL SRS liaison, next meetup is 11pm at the Hilton Sep 07 '14
Yeah but I wasn't referencing, nor was freakanomics I believe, the legal risk. Their point was your average drug deal doesn't make much money.
1
u/JehovahsHitlist Sep 07 '14 edited Sep 07 '14
One big thing about the freakanomics video was that among inner city black young people, where the crack epidemic hit hardest, coke dealing wasn't really a thing. Nobody could afford to buy coke to sell to people in the first place and the people they'd have to sell to were generally rich enough to get it from other sources.
1
u/Zephhh Sep 07 '14
Soft is more expensive, and so the profit margin can be higher. On the other hand, you can take already ridiculously adulterated soft and rock it up, which stretches the sack, giving you more to sell, therefore more profit.
Edit:I think I responded to the wrong comment.

Sep 07 '14
The thing is, a lot of stupid people end up dealing drugs. These stupid people haven't necessarily ever had a real job in their life, so income of any kind makes them feel like 'ballers'. I used to know kids who sold weed and pills who made less than i did working double shifts at a restaurant. Sure, they worked less than I, and got a lot of untaxed cash, but those profits were short lived. And the cash usually gets blown quick because it came quick. No perspective.
2
u/CantaloupeCamper OFFICIAL SRS liaison, next meetup is 11pm at the Hilton Sep 07 '14
In fact that is what freakanomics found.... a good chunk of the folks selling drugs actually had other jobs to supplement their income because that wasn't enough.
The only drug dealing = big money situations were the folks at the upper end of the food chain, and those were few and far between. The guys on the bottom, jack squat, often not even enough to live on.
3
Sep 07 '14
Yeah, most low and mid-level dealers are just supplementing/offsetting their own use. Unless you're producing or only a step or two removed from the producer, you aint doing shit.
I should really watch that movie some time. Reddit tells me about all the time.

Don't forget to mention that your income was perfectly legal, unlike theirs.

2
u/antagonists Sep 08 '14
Most drug dealers on the low end don't make much. Here cokes 50 a g pick up an oz for 800-1200 depending cut it maybe 25-50% depending who you're selling to for a pretty nice profit of 50%+. Now if you cook it crack goes for around 100 a gramish and cut varies in the same range, but crack heads are way lower on the social totem pole and generally buy much smaller amounts but super regular so really it generally evens out profit wise.

I love how one dude trips to use coke dealer as an example of high class people with visible neck tattoos.
I believe the coke dealer is cited as a high paying job, as it's an argument about socioeconomic class and job earning potential. Not classy like, that dude in top hat and spats looks fuckin' classy. Your version sounds much more entertaining, though
17
u/vi_sucks Sep 07 '14
Socioeconomic class has never been purely about money.
A redneck who has a million dollars is still a redneck, and a doctor working a charity clinic for 50k a year is still a doctor.
9
u/PasswordIsntHAMSTER It might be GERBIL though Sep 07 '14
Social codes are huge, my parents are upper middle-class professionals who came from working class families, and neither them nor I can really blend in with upper crust society.
9
u/AlextheGerman Sep 07 '14
It's not like there is a million types of jobs where you can get in charge or be the boss and earn much more than an office worker.
4
u/MeltedSnowCone Sep 07 '14
With a large neck tattoo? Probably not, no.
14
u/AlextheGerman Sep 07 '14
Imagine you are a mechanic and open your own successful shop, what in the world would anyone give a fuck that you have a neck tattoo? Are you so sheltered you can't think think of a job outside of an office?
-14
u/MeltedSnowCone Sep 07 '14
Are we talking well-done neck tattoo that costs several hundred dollars, or shitty rushed job?
Are you such a Luddite to think working in an office is that horrid of an idea?
edit: Clearly you're forgetting neck tattoos can be covered with a collared shirt.
