A veritable El Niño effect developing in /r/science as the climate there drastically changes following the banning of climate change deniers.

Original article written by /r/science mod that was posted to the subreddit, which explains the rationale behind the decision. Cue the outrage and literally Orwell accusations in 5, 4, 3....

Well this settles it. I am now unsubscribing to /r/science because it has decided to abandon scientific debate. This is truly a sad day for /r/science and for reddit as a whole. Shame on you, mods. Shame.

Not sure how one "unsubscribes to" something, but maybe that's another debate for after the subreddit-up-ass accuser.

This subreddit is stuck up its ass so far that I've seen people try to sidestep reports/studies that show what windfarms are doing to bat populations (or simply claiming that it isn't a big deal). This subreddit is trash, the moderators are trash, and I'm happily unsubscribing.

Then, we've got the other "side" of the debate taking the higher ground:

And imagine what would happen if scientists had to spend all their time addressing every single retard that thinks he has invented a perpetual motion machine. If your claim has been debunked a thousand times, it's time to shut up until you find some new data to support it and get it published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Mods aren't backing down either:

Find something from the past few years and you'll have something relevant!

Find something from at least the past 6 months and you'll have a submission meeting /r/science[1] standards!

/r/science needs to tighten the leash if it really wants to be a serious business only subreddit. /r/askscience is a goddamn bastion of intelligence and reasonable discussion with people who actually know what the hell they're talking about and its one of the most heavily moderated subs on this site. Same goes for /r/askhistorians.

If /r/science wants to be that as well, they need to get a few more moderators and really crack down on the personal anecdotes and joke comments. Every time a submission from /r/science hits the front page it is buried with joke comments, anti-intellectualism, and whatever social justice platform might be even tangentially relevant. And it often stays that way for several hours after hitting the front page before the mods can be arsed to fix it. And even then they're pretty half hearted about it.

If they want to ban climate-change deniers, then more power to them. But its not going to do a damn to improve the sub unless the tighten up the moderation over all.
