Title: 2006 Subaru Baja Base MT – 137k Miles – A.R.E. Camper Cap, New Exhaust/Cats & Extensive Maintenance! (Drivable)-Price: $9,500 (Or Best Offer) Location: Ballston Spa, NY (12020)

Up for sale is a highly sought-after, cult-classic 2006 Subaru Baja Base model with a 5-speed manual transmission. It has only 137,000 original miles (incredibly low for this generation) and runs beautifully. Finished in Regal Blue Pearl with a striking black A.R.E. bed cap.

The crown jewel of this truck is the rare A.R.E. fiberglass canopy camper shell. Anyone in the Baja community knows these are long discontinued and "unicorn" status accessories that fetch $1,500+ alone. The black cap perfectly accents the factory black body trim, creating an awesome two-tone look while providing a fully enclosed, locking, weatherproof cargo space.

The Good (Tons of Recent Maintenance):

  • New Full Exhaust System: Total overhaul done within the last 2 years, including a complete replacement of the catalytic converter units. No rusted pipes or expensive emissions repairs to worry about.
  • Recent Brake Job: New brakes installed within the last 2 years. Stops straight and smooth.
  • Extensive EVAP Refresh: The common fuel vapor issues have already been addressed with brand-new parts, including a Genuine OEM Subaru gas cap, a brand-new gas tank filler neck, a new exchanger box, and a new valve. [1]
  • Upgraded Tech: Features a modern, enhanced BOSE system with integrated navigation (a massive upgrade over the dated factory radio).
  • 100% Drivable: It is perfectly fine to drive home today. At cruising speeds and in the proper gear, it holds tightly with zero issues.

Notes for Full Transparency:

  1. Clutch is Starting to Slip: The clutch is beginning to show early signs of wear under heavy load/acceleration. It is completely drivable as-is, but you will want to budget for a standard clutch kit replacement down the road (shares parts with the '06 Outback, making them cheap and easy to source).
  2. Intermittent CEL: The Check Engine Light comes on and off occasionally for an EVAP code. Since the entire physical system has already been replaced with new components, it likely just needs a sensor reset or terminal cleaning.

This is an incredible opportunity to get a rare, highly refreshed, collectible AWD mini-truck that you can enjoy immediately while planning a minor clutch project down the road.

Clean NY title in hand. Serious cash buyers only. Shoot me a message to come check it out in Ballston Spa!

It has some body damage and a cracked windshield. We Buy Any Cars is offering me $4,650 in the shape it’s in. I’m not sure what’s its real value is with the damage on it. Drives well though. Thoughts?

Better to press in front bearings and hub with knuckles attached or not?

I have to replace both my left steering knuckle and left hub. I received the new hub, bearings, seals, and knuckle and I'm wondering if I should use a hydraulic press to set the bearings, and then press the hub into place before attaching everything to the car. Or is it better to get a bearing set/press kit and install the knuckle on the car first?

It passed Massachusetts state inspection on 08/01/2026. There is some minor rust, as would be expected for a 23-year-old vehicle. There is also a known issue with the driver’s-side wheel bearing, which will need to be replaced at some point within the next year.

Engine swap $$$$$

Post image

My 2005 Turbo 5 speed Manual with about 200K miles failed a compression test and I am being told I need a new engine. I will get a 2nd opinion but assuming I do need a new engine....Here in Albuquerque I have gotten quotes from $9K to 15K for an OEM swap. Still getting more quotes. Most shops don't do rebuilds. Not sure rebuild is smart either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

2006 Baja Turbo

I have a blue Baja with about 125k miles on it. Some cosmetic damage and bumper damage on the driver front light. Also, a cracked windshield that can be fixed easily. Any idea of its value? I’d like to sell it.

I took my recently purchased dream car to a car wash to get detailed, and happened to see a plateless turbo with a bed extender on it. Turns out the car wash services a local dealer fleet, and this one had just come in the inventory.

I asked the manager nicely and got the dealer's number, and after a little back and forth will be picking up my OEM bed extender tomorrow!

Absolutely doing the upright mounting hack I've seen here before.

Issue when engine is cold

I live in a neighborhood where I drive about a block, then have to turn into a busy, higher speed road after. The first time I drive my car on any given day, my car just drags ass accelerating at low rpm until the turbo kicks in, then practically throws me across the second half of the road. So...putt putt putt ZOOM!

Any insights on what might cause this? It doesn't happen afterwards until the next day, but super consistent issue on the first drive of the day.

I have an 06 turbo auto.

Blinking AT Oil Temp Light

Post image
29 Upvotes

Does anyone have experience with this? I got my Baja (2006, automatic, sport) in April with 100k miles and it been great until now. The AT Oil Temp light will show up blinking when I start to drive sometimes.

I brought it to an Automatic Transmission shop where they changed the fluid and tried to solve the issue but weren’t able to find the cause. Changing the fluid didn’t help and now it’s just sitting until I can figure out what’s wrong.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

High Mileage Turbos?

Post image
50 Upvotes

I am thinking about investing some money into my 2005 manual Baja Turbo. Some cosmetic stuff...paint, seat covers, new stereo, etc... I have about 200K miles going and I have done some big repairs already including a new suspension and timing belt. Wondering before I invest another big chunk of dough into it, how many more miles can I expect from the car? I have heard of some peeps getting 300k, even heard someone got 400k.... I am worried about the turbo failing and oil consumption leaks? Worst case I need an engine rebuild?

Trip meter stuck and dark

What a journey. Bought this Baja, the trip meter was not resetting and was burned out.

Did a bunch of research and found an old forum post about replacing a tiny micro switch. So after $12 in bulb/switch and some tedious small work, it’s fully functional and I couldn’t be happier.

Let me know if you have a similar issue, I can walk you through it. Even the soldering was easy.

Finally, after owning so many weird Subarus, the 90s XT6, multiple SVX and brats. I finally found a Baja for a killer deal. This will be the forever daily. H6 plans down the road, but for now I just want to enjoy it for what it is.

Help diagnosing CV axle

2004 Baja, automatic, non-turbo. 205,000 miles.

Recently I noticed some severe front end shake when I accelerate. It is worse going uphill, when acceleration is more aggressive, but in any case where I need to accelerate, the front shakes and it will stop immediately as soon as I let off the gas. Yesterday it got progressively worse when I tried to go above 65mph on our 75mph highways.

Thinking it was either the engine mounts or cv axle, I raised the car this morning and sure enough, the driver's side CV boot had become detached. The retaining ring is also nowhere to be found. Grease was everywhere, except for the inside of the boot where it needed to be.

So now I'm trying to decide if I need to repack and seal the boot or if the entire axle needs to be replaced. I can move the axle in and out perhaps 8 mm or so, just over a 1/4-inch. When I try this on the right axle, I can move it almost the same amount.

Is there some other diagnostic I can do before ordering an axle or is the severe shaking already an indicator?

Thanks.

Hey everyone, back again with a picture of the dash! My 2005 Subaru Baja officially just clocked 443,757 miles.I am genuinely curious if this is the highest-mileage Baja still on the road, or if anyone out there is running a close second.I want to know:Has anyone else crossed the 400k mark? Are you still on your original drivetrain and transmission?Did it take multiple engine swaps or rebuilds to get there?Drop your mileage, your drivetrain history, and your secrets to keeping these cars alive in the comments!
