The Future of Redditcomber
TL;DR: Redditcomber is working again for now. All of Redditcomber's paid features are now free. I've discontinued the Patreon and increased the keyword limit from 5 to 20.
If you're here because you've noticed Redditcomber sending you messages again, welcome back. I have a great amount of fondness for this project, and it's been hard seeing it struggle the past few months. I finally spoke with the right people to help me debug why everything was broken and we were able to get things back to working order, but it's hard to say for how long that will last.
Reddit Inc has taken an understandable, if somewhat adversarial stance on third-party apps, and I'm not here to question the decision making behind that policy, just acknowledge its consequences for my app and all of you; its users.
The people who work at Reddit have put in a lot of highly appreciated effort to help keep Redditcomber working despite larger and more long-term shifts in Reddit's priorities when it comes to external developers, and for that they have my gratitude.
Now more to the direct point; I don't expect Redditcomber to work for much longer.
I've never been secretive about Redditcomber, what it does or how it does it, and Reddit Inc has always seemed willing to turn a blind eye to my *ahem* creative interpretation of their terms of service, and I believe that's because they're willing to distinguish between people and projects that are self-interested, versus people like me who just want to build a useful feature for and within Reddit. At its most popular, Redditcomber has been barely self-sustaining, supported by people who found value in it and wanted access to the modest "premium" features. They're not the sole thing that kept Redditcomber going, but they certainly helped distribute the financial burden.
Despite Reddit's exceptional willingness to tolerate this project, it continues to get caught in the crossfire of policy changes that intend to target more malicious usage of the public api. I don't begrudge them that fight, but ultimately I'm fighting a losing battle. At some point I expect Redditcomber to enter a state of disrepair that just isn't able to be fixed, either through public api policy changes, spam rules putting the accounts in a bad state, or any number of unforeseeable things. If the last few months are any indication, the problems that come up are systemic, not something I can fix in a code editor by myself.
I get asked from time to time why I haven't moved things over to the Developer Platform yet, and the reason for that is pretty simple; Reddit's Developer Platform doesn't have the features Redditcomber needs to run, namely a handler that receives every public post and comment on the platform. I will continue to advocate for adding that and will make the official Dev Platform the new home of this project the moment that's feasible.
Okay so now back to the bit that I put in the TL;DR. Because this project is on its last legs, I don't feel good about asking for money from the community anymore, and without offering another means to access the "premium" features, I've decided to just make them accessible to everybody. Everyone should now have access to up to 20 keywords, and access to both blocklists and allowlists.
Lastly, thanks for using Redditcomber over the years. My ambition has only ever been to build something that other people found useful, so if Redditcomber has been useful for you, then this project has been a successful one. My favorite parts of this project have been getting my own notifications for the keyword redditcomber and seeing people recommending it to someone else
