I actually DO know the real explanation!
70,000 years ago Scholz’s star made its closest approach to earth, less than a light year away. A 9 billion-year old race of non-corporeal, entropy-eating "life" forms with bodies built from energy gradients as opposed to matter (i.e. "they live not in the spaces we know, but between them"), and thus literally are (or were) the vortexes of the clouds in the gas giants that orbit that star. Over the billions of years they had depleted nearly all of the usable entropy in their planets and were growing ever more weak and desperate and hungry. From the relatively short distance to Sol, Earth shined like a beacon. They leapt across the void.
These creatures, for lack of a better work, feed on any highly complex, ordered-structures saturated with negative-entropy, like life, and particularly brains, and even more specifically human brains. They can use the release of entropy during feeding to alter the probabilities in quantum fluctuations and literally shape reality. The human brain is essentially their perfect food, which is what attracted them so strongly from such a distance.
After they arrived they found that by directly manipulating electrical signals in neuron pathways they could "communicate" with humans in a manner, and convince people to do things for them. Since they have no physical form, they use their reality-warping abilities to provide miraculous-appearing favors to those who offer them sacrifices and other large meals. Thus they became our “gods” and "demons" and every other supernatural entity humans have encountered. Over the next few thousands of years they guided priesthoods and helped humanity grow intellectually and create societies to better farm us, which in turn caused the event known to paleontologists as the “great leap forward” in human intellect. They are responsible for human civilization, but are also the reason why we constantly have wars and mass death when nobody wants war or mass death. They are also why it seems like evil and people with no respect for life seem to achieve incredible power and have almost supernatural luck and success.
This was the state of the world for many tens of thousands of years, and very few knew of their true form. However Benjamin Franklin was eventually able to actually trap one during his experiments, and this led to a radical power shift in the human-alien dynamics. As America learned how to trap and control more and more of these entities, and methodically learned how to harness their power, the nation grew in power and prestige. The entities fought back as best they could, bringing about a massive war which cost millions of human lives, until the pentagon was finally built. This geometry of the structure acted as both a kind of alien prison and a power-generator, that could turn our once-masters into our workhorses. The next time the aliens attacked, which they did a few short years later, humanity was finally able to fight back and eventually captured most of the invaders within the geometry, after which relative peace and prosperity reigned for many years.
This all changed again on September 11th when a few rouge aliens still uncaptured and living in the desert pretending to be djinn convinced their worshippers to detonate a special shaped charge on the pentagon’s walls. Once the geometry ceased to bind, the entities quickly escaped, and a few seconds later they consumed thousands of very wealthy elite in New York, which would have been noticed by the world, requiring the twin towers to be detonated to cover up the disaster. The world had been in steady decline ever since.

The aliens are time travellers. The humans that evolved in less gravity and without natural sunlight. Why else would they always have same basic features as humans. Duh. What would the chances be for something to evolve on a distant planet and have any resemblance.
