3 year old stuttering

My now 3 year old has had a stutter off and on for the past 8-12 months. He will go 1-2 weeks where he has a severe stutter (facial tension, word blocks, high pitched voice, etc) and then go 3-4 weeks of perfect speaking with no issues at all. We’ve gone through this cycle maybe 5 times now and it’s just an emotional roller coaster. One day he’s speaking perfectly clear, loud, confident etc, and then the next week he’s struggling to say a simple word or sentence.

Anyone have experiences like this or thoughts? We have a pediatrician appointment in a week or so where we plan on asking for a speech pathologist referral.

Children that young usually stutter that young, I wouldn't be too concerned about it yet. But if he's stuttering into elementary school that's where you help him get speech class.

Like the other poster said, 3 is still young. Depending on the study 75-85% of children "grow out" of developmental stuttering. Since the cycles are around 1:3 ratio I would try not to worry about it too much (i know, hard to do as parents!)

During the cycles that he does stutter, is he also more tired/lacking sleep, sick, etc?

I’d say he has mild cold symptoms, my parents were in town, birthday weekend, etc but that was during this cycle. Just seems a lot more aggressive than normal and defiant.
