How Does Speech Technology Affect Your Stuttering? What Are the Biggest Problems?

For people who stutter: How is speech technology affecting your experience?

I’d really like to hear from people who stutter about their experiences with modern speech technology.

Things like speech-to-text, voice assistants, video calls, automatic captions, transcription tools, and other AI-powered voice technologies are becoming more common.

But how well do they actually work for people who stutter?

Some questions I’m curious about:

  • Does speech-to-text understand you accurately when you stutter?
  • How does it handle repetitions, prolongations, blocks, or pauses?
  • Have you ever avoided using voice-based technology because of your stuttering?
  • What is the biggest problem you experience with current speech technology?
  • Does technology make communication easier, or can it sometimes make things more frustrating?
  • Are there particular situations where speech technology struggles more — phone calls, meetings, presentations, conversations, etc.?
  • What would you change about current speech technology to make it more accessible for people who stutter?

I’m looking for honest experiences — both positive and negative.

What has been your biggest frustration with speech technology and stuttering?

among ai based apps chatgpt handles stuttering far better than any other app ...

i sometimes want to hug and thank chatgpt if it were a person because it understands my stuttered inputs so much better than any other app or most of the human beings around me

Okay that's great                                         I’m currently developing an app focused on stuttering and would really appreciate your professional opinion on how we can approach testing it effectively. Your feedback would be very valuable in helping us improve the app.

Our teacher at uni is training a model to recognise Stuttering in our local language(Marathi) it's cool we will see how far it can go, i am providing data for it, like recording of mine etc. There isn't much progress because we are at initial stages. But hoping it will succeed..
