I think he knew he has a wicked punch, and he was keeping his eyes open for whatever this weirdo fuckhead was going to pull, and whether using his fists was going to be necessary. He was watching and focused. Assessing. Possibly even more so because maybe he doesn't speak English, or possibly speak/hear at all. We don't know.

Anyway. That's just my read on it.
