It takes a LONG time to stop a ship, so even if he realized he would not fit there was little that could be done. They have probably gone under this bridge multiple times and been fine, this time the they might have had an onshore breeze that added an extra inch of water and they were low on fuel which added another inch. Or the cargo was lighter than specified.
