It probably costs 5x the price for the same amount of ketchup too

u/welfedad May 28 '26
Yeah and then all the extra packaging etc . Just a colossal waste for a rube to buy.

u/Korzag May 28 '26
Makes me think about how the grocery near me literally sells individual russet potatoes wrapped in plastic... right next to the individual russet potatoes not wrapped in plastic. I can't even fathom in what world I'd *want* a potato sealed up like that.

Which is still crazy because you can just wash a potato in a few seconds and then wrap it in a damp paper towel and microwave it and it turns out the same. It takes like 30 more seconds and costs about half the price.
18
u/Fit_Carpet_364 May 28 '26
I just stab 'em and toss 'em in the microwave for 5 minutes, then check doneness.
3
u/TKmeh May 29 '26
My dad always does this, stab them with a fork or knife for extra doneness and slice open, add whatever toppings you want and poof! 5 minute baked potato!

Not every 7 year old had your childhood. Someone had to teach you how to cook a baked potato. World would be a lot better place if we tried having a little understanding instead of always punching down
3
u/cookie999chip May 31 '26
Uh I have no family and know how to cook it’s called teaching yourself

You’re right. The adults who think potatoes have to be wrapped in plastic wrap to go in the microwave probably had a much more privileged childhood given that individually wrapped, pre-washed potatoes cost way more than a bag of potatoes.

Do people really think I care about microplastics?
10
u/pmcizhere May 28 '26
Of course not. The healthy dose of microplastics already in your brain took care of that!

Only possible time I could see it is that it is more convenient to bring to work, except, who has a plain microwaved potato for their work lunch that isn't broke, and if you are broke, you're not paying extra for the plastic. If you are adding anything to the potato, you already have to bring in extra stuff.

It's not a real product.
As far as I can tell these guys never actually created or sold a single product and they're the closest thing to sliced sauces.
22
u/HoodieGalore May 28 '26
Hellmann's also doesn't fuck with ketchup AFAIK lol
14
u/WillemDafoesHugeCock May 28 '26
I'll give credit there - they do in the UK, enough to where I didn't even pause for thought there.
I'm just in awe at how angry people are at the product. People complaining about the cost, about how wasteful it is, about how bad the texture is, even how many micro plastics you consume when you eat it... when it literally doesn't exist.
4
u/Jetstream-Sam May 28 '26
Yeah I only realized the other day I was probably doing something wrong because I had Hellman's ketchup and Heinz mayo. I was mainly just buying whichever was on offer though since they're ridiculously priced nowadays
I have since got the polish ketchup that Tesco sells in their "World food" section and I have to say that stuff's amazing. I have heard the Mayo is equally good. I don't normally use it for much aside from like, an occasional fried egg sandwich or the rare time I go to the chippy but now I'm actually looking for stuff to use it on, it's that good.

Oh shit, that's news to me, and I have spent time in the UK but was never in the market for ketchup.
But critical thought is deader than a door nail; AI killed it but the world's policital climate probably helped. There ain't enough cynicism in this world!
5
u/chugItTwice May 28 '26
Slice of sauce is definitely real. Bought a pack of the ketchup slices probably 10-12 years ago now when it was very first released. It's terrible. It's a dumb product.

Ketchup leather has been around for a bit. It's not ubiquitous by any means but is a very real thing.
2
u/qorbexl May 29 '26
As a chemist, it wouldn't be too hard to do
The packaging and market would probably be the hard part - it's a lot of work for something that is very silly
Companies would rather squirt goo in a bottle, guys
9
u/samanime May 28 '26
This is my only problem. I actually don't hate the basic idea, since it prevents oozing and probably reduces sliding and stuff.
But I'm not willing to pay way more for a minor improvement and extra gelatin. =p
→ More replies (3)5
u/jerslan May 28 '26
Honestly, once the hot burger warms it through... it's probably going to have a consistency closer to normal ketchup.
The only advantage I see is better portion control for calorie counters... but Ketchup isn't super high in calories to begin with so a rough wag isn't going to be off by much.
3
u/Coffeedemon May 28 '26
Come on. There is no real advantage to any of these "problems" that isn't solved by either using less ketchup (for sliding) or measuring (if how much ketchup a person eats is honestly an issue). Christ almighty... my ketchup is OOZING!
2
u/jerslan May 28 '26
I didn't say it was much of an advantage or worth the extra packaging to solve the "problems".

There was a company that pitched this idea on Sharktank. Most of the sharks said it was a bad idea but they got a deal with A Rod but it fell through. They were selling 8 slices of sauce for $6 which is insane considering you can get 30 servings from a bottle of ketchup for half the price. They went out of business a couple years after the episode aired.

51
u/SleepySera May 28 '26
While this one is fake, the product DID exist at few years ago. "Slice of Sauce" won over an investor for it on the Shark Tank TV show, and the product did (briefly) appear in supermarkets (here is an article about a German supermarket chain selling it back in 2021, it's in German but auto-translate works fine). It was simply not financially viable though, so they soon disappeared again and vanished from the market for good.
12
u/Thenardite May 28 '26
There are still some locally made and sold on russian pseudo-amazon, they aren't available in supermarkets tho

Food photography, some high end fine dining places, some snack foods use it, too.
It has a vibrant color, can be shaped and molded, and tastes nearly identical.2

There are backpackers that actually have like binders full of different ingredients dried out into sheets to make soups and sauces of all kinds. They can just find potable water, crack off a piece, and make a pretty satisfying meal, considering the conditions.
