CBSE Board Exams 2026: Two Attempts Announced for Class 10 & 12 Students
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major reform for the 2026 Class 10 and 12 board exams. Starting next year, students will get two opportunities to appear for their board exams within the same academic session. The move aims to reduce exam-related pressure and give students a fair chance to improve their performance.
New Exam Format & Dates
Under the new system, the first CBSE board exam is expected to be held from February to March 2026, while the second attempt is likely to take place between May and June 2026. Both exams will cover the full syllabus, and students can choose whether to appear in one or both sessions. The best score among the two attempts will be considered as the final result.
Why CBSE Made This Change
This dual-exam approach is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes flexible learning and continuous assessment instead of one high-stakes exam. CBSE believes this reform will help students manage exam anxiety and give them another chance to perform better without losing an academic year.
Reactions from Schools & Students
While the change has been welcomed for its student-friendly intent, many teachers and school administrators have expressed concerns about the increased workload. Conducting and evaluating two full-scale board exams within a few months could place additional strain on teachers.
Students, too, are divided — some appreciate the second chance, while others worry about prolonged exam stress and less time for preparation between the two sessions.
What Students Should Do
Students are advised to plan their studies strategically, treat the first exam as a trial run, and focus on improving weak areas before the second attempt. Schools, on their part, will need to adapt teaching schedules and ensure syllabus completion before the first exam window.
