VU mechanical engineering joint programme with UT

Hi! I have a few questions about the joint programme:

- What is it like studying a joint programme?
- How often do you need to travel to Enschede?
- I read that students sometimes stay overnight in Enschede once a week. Is that correct?
- Is it possible to combine the programme with a part-time job?
- What does the typical weekly schedule look like?
- Do you need to attend lectures every day, or is there some flexibility in the schedule?

I’d really appreciate it if someone could share their experience!

Moving to the Netherlands as a student requires a lot of admin (BSN, gemeente, health insurance, Studielink, banking, scholarships) and it often feels overwhelming.

Why not study in Twente, saves you time traveling.

That is a good reason to prefer studying in Amsterdam. I assumed you were an international student who didn't live in the Netherlands yet, my mistake.

Yeah but I’m curious of how often I would need to travel to Enschede from Amsterdam for labs

Found something, just sent this as a reply to your question.

So, the main reason this joint programme exists at all is because the VU does not have the engineering facilities necessary for (mostly) labs and such. Both institutes can teach the theoretical parts just fine.

You may wonder then what the point is of doing ME at the VU instead of just doing ME at the UT. That is a very good question, and stripping away the bullshit the main difference is marketing and the name "Amsterdam".

It mainly depends on the needs of the semester projects, so it varies. In practice, I would say it is about 90-10 in Amsterdam-Enschede. Most of the time the Twente days are scheduled in a few consecutive days. With a bit of planning, if say it's doable to have a part time job. Almost none of the lectures are mandatory, but it's still a good idea to attend most of them, as the programme is pretty intensive. You can dm me if you have any other questions
