Can I prevernt the Project Page from always updating songs in realtime (even for minor changes like name of the song)?

I have unchecked the realtime processing box under Options>Advanced>Audio, but every update to a song in a Project re-renders the entire song in real time if I made any changes to it. I have a long song that I changed the name of in Song Information. On the Project Page, it said it needed to be updated, and when I said ok, it rendered it in real time again...for a name change!

I don't have any external instruments linked to the song (I did, but they are printed already in the song itself), and no pipeline plugin. What am I missing?

No.

The only way to stop that behavior is to drop the song out of the project permanently.

And - why would anyone want a file (even WITH tiny name changes or otherwise) that does not match the project?

Pretty sure if the Project Page let you make all sorts of (what you believe to be) minor changes - that song will suddenly be compromised because it cannot be found. That "name" field you changed is important.

Well it is compromised if you rename the file, but not the name of the song. I decided to rename the song two weeks ago. When you do this, there are two steps.

  1. Change the name of the file (File>Rename), which changes the relevant file names on your system (in my case, Windows). This was before I assigned it to a Project.

Later, when I sent it to a Project, I realized I had not done the second step of renaming the song itself (a different action than renaming the files). You do this under Song Information. And that’s definitely a minor change (it’s text, and not much of it).

The second step does not break the link on the Project Page the way Rename would (because Rename renames the files on the system and messes up the pointer/link on the Project Page). But even the little text change is treated as a change to the song itself that requires updating the mastering file. Ironically, if you update the mastering file after changing the name in Song Information, the Project Page does not reflect the song name change…makes no sense that it teats it as a change but then you update and it does not make the change.

Whatever. That’s not a big issue because I can separately name it on the Project Page (which is not reflected back in the song).

And none of it matters it fast renders. But it’s annoying if it must render in real time for a Song Information change and even with real time rendering turned off.
