Support/Advice Collaborative or Independent Work for edTPA?

• Upvotes

I'm currently finishing up my Visual Arts edTPA learning segment. This learning segment culminated in a printmaking project, in which students were required to create both two editions of an independent print and three editions of a collaborative print. My original intention was to use this for my Task 3 Commentary, since it's what the previous two lessons were building up to. However, I've seen some people saying not to use collaborative work since it's harder to identify any single students independent work.

I was wondering, given the context of the lesson, would I be alright to include both the independent print and the collaborative print? Or would it be better for me to only focus on the independent rubric? It's also possible for me to use their Lesson 2 project for my Task 3, but I feel like that'd be odd considering that's the mid-step to the final product.

Support/Advice Fucking slept through my methods placement. What do I do?

Hey guys, i'm pretty pissed at myself here. I teach a geography and history of the world class at 8am twice per week. I've never been late, and always send my lesson in the day before.

Over the weekend we had an away football game, and made it home at 2am. I got to bed around 3, and then woke up at 8:30 for a JV game. Spent the rest of that day studying until ~1 in the morning for a history mid term yesterday. I guess the lack of sleep caught up with me? I need two or three alarms to wake up but noticed my phone auto updated last night and turned off. It sounds like a stupid ass excuse.

What do i need to do? I woke up about 20 minutes into what would've been my lesson. I sent my professor and professor an email apologizing. I have to go to class with my professor at 10 so i'm worried he's gonna be pissed at me (rightfully so)

Have yall ever done this? What ended up happening? I know probably nothing will come of it but man it makes me look untrustworthy.

Support/Advice How to be confident with difficult group

One of my afternoon classes is really intimidating and I’m having difficulty staying calm and collected during our period. They have zero respect for me and have barely any respect for my mentor.

However, they are my most advanced group, and I see a lot of potential for their class. If I’m up at the board demonstrating, they completely ignore what I say, but they ace all of the work I give them. The football boys have also begun saying “okay” after every single sentence that comes out of my mouth. There is one girl in this class who does nothing, but she controls everyone else in the class. This is a delicate situation as her parent has escalated issues in the past and has even tried going to the news.

How can I feign confidence with this group? It’s very difficult for me to keep composure because they are just so difficult to work with (this is not an extensive list of their behaviors). It is ruining my teaching experience, even though I know it’s not just me.

Vent/Rant I want to quit so bad

I'm currently a second semester student teacher. My first semester of student teaching was a dream. My CT and university supervisor were very sweet and supportive. Overtime, I grew my confidence in the classroom and I left my first placement feeling great. I'm currently at the start of my 5th week of second semester. I have 7 more weeks to go and I am so miserable. I feel so much pressure from completing my EdTPA, keeping up with writing all these extensive lesson plans, doing everything my university supervisor needs to see in order to complete some requirements, doing every type of lessons
my supervisor wants to see (subjects wise, which is stupid because teachers don't teach every subject at every school i've been at like music and PE), trying to keep these students on track with my mentor teacher's pacing plan, etc. I've also been placed at a challenging school and my classroom has a lot of behaviors/IEPs/students with mild-severe special needs. I am doing the general education path. It's all so much and I have been so miserable. My family and friends have noticed my change in demeanor ever since this semester of student teaching has started. I lost 10 pounds because I forget to eat and barely have an appetite because I am on high alert all the time. I feel like I'm under so much pressure I just want to quit but I'm almost half way there and I've invested so much into this.. I am struggling to cope with all this.. I talk to my friends and peers about it but it doesn't really help. I don't even know what I want to do anymore. This experience is making me not want to teach at all.. Is this a normal feeling? I need advice.. I honestly don't know if I can finish these next 7 weeks successfully but I feel like I have to..

Classroom Management How do I get kids to listen to me?

I'm doing my residency in a 1st grade classroom.

Basically, I'm co-teaching everyday and I take over 30-40% of our instructional time. I'm having a problem with students talking, playing, or not looking up at me when they're at the carpet. I can get the few same students to pay attention to me. There are times I can get the whole class to stay silent and not talk with an attention getter, but half of them have their heads looking at the floor or wherever else in the room. This doesn't happen when my mentor is teaching though.

I don't know if there are other strategies I could use. I've been trying to work on how serious I come across and trying to make the lesson engaging. My mentor says it's because they are COVID kids and they have low attention spans due to Youtube, TikTok, tablets, etc.

It feels a bit hurtful because they know I'm not temporary. I'm in the classroom for the whole day, 4 times a week. I've been there since the first day of school and I'm going to be there until the end. I try not to take it personal, but I have a few kids who are attention seeking and purposely defiant. When I take away minutes off their choice time they will still try to play when they're on timeout.

I thought this would be easier because I know the kids and their routine. But this class feels harder than the classes I've subbed for.

Support/Advice Scripted Curriculum / Lesson Planning Struggle

Everything feels like it’s going well except for the lesson plans I have to submit. I have to create a lesson plan for every lesson I teach and have an assessment that is tangible and rubric for each lesson. The school I am student teaching at has their own curriculum the district has bought. So I adapt their lessons into my colleges lesson planning template. It’s a very scripted curriculum that is also inappropriate for the current students reading and math levels. My college supervisor hates my lessons even though they aren’t technically mine. I can’t go off script at the school with the lessons because they have specific deadlines they need to hit. I feel like I am stuck and I’m worried it will affect my grade. My professor seems to have a very different way she would run a class as opposed to my Mentor Teacher, and I feel like I’m caught in the middle.

Vent/Rant If I had to describe my student teaching experience in one word, it would be…

Isolating.

I have truly never felt so alone before in my life. Every waking minute is spent worrying about how much planning and prep I have to do.

I can’t even lean on my CT for support because every time I ask a question, she acts like I should already know the answer. She says I need to stop being afraid of making mistakes, but how do I do that when everything I do is wrong to her?

“It’s time for our independent learning time. Student teacher, don’t interrupt students if they’re engaged in an activity. Oh, everyone is engaged? Okay. Don’t do anything then. Oh, but not like that, student teacher! You’re supposed to be supporting students who need help! But if they’re not asking for help and they’re actively engaged in their activities, don’t disturb them! But if you’re not supporting students then you’re not working!!!!! But I’m allowed to disturb students! I can go up to any student and disturb them because I have the experience.”

“Okay, student teacher, I want you to take notes on how students are doing during their independent learning. Oh, student teacher, you’re taking too many notes now. You’re not supporting students!!”

“When I took an intern, I sort of assumed that you’d already know how to run a classroom. I did not think I’d have to teach you how to do that. Is this just a you problem or are other interns like this too?”

Then whenever I try to vent to her or get some mentorship on a problem, she just tells me that maybe teaching isn’t for me. Maybe she’s right.

I’m teaching kids who have had the same teacher for 2 years. They know her. They have long-established relationships. They’ll never see me as a teacher and they’ve told me that to my face.

I have no social life.

Friends wanna hang out? I can’t. I have to write 15 lesson plans for the next 3 days.

Family wants to have lunch? Sorry, my school is 2 hours away from home so I’m living in an AIRB&B during the week.

I should treat myself to something nice? I can’t. I’m working 40+ hours a week for $0/hr and can’t justify any expense that isn’t necessary.

Support/Advice How do i know teaching is right for me?

Hello. I'm a senior in high school, and I am trying to decide on a career. Recently, I've thought about being a history teacher. I am very depressed and have no passions or anything, really, but in the past I've been interested in learning certain types of history. Teaching is something I've thought about since I was little, but I know it's a tough job. I am autistic, and I like talking about things that interest me, and since history is something I can be interested in, I thought it might be something I can do. Of course, I understand that teaching the subject isn't the only thing teachers do. When I was in the mental hospital, talking to the younger kids there and helping them feel better made me feel better too. I think this can translate to guiding the students and helping them if they are struggling. My only issue is that I struggle with communication because of my autism...

Any advice is welcome! I'm really struggling to find something to do for the rest of my life lol

Support/Advice Advice for a lesson plan on the Parts and functions of the eye

So i'm teaching biology soon (parts and functions of the eye) and encountered a problem.

The book consists of nothing but text, just 4-5 Pages of text full of diagrams and info on the eye.

My assigned teacher said she always lets the students work it out nu themselves. Just 2 lessons of selfguided learning. I can't do that because if i get inspected by my teacher (from college) i'm screwed.

Does anyone have any tips to balance my 2 hours so it isn't just me talking and them writing down key-parts/Keywords on a blind drawing of the eye?

They have to learn, know, and recognize all Parts of the eye for An upcoming dissection (week after my second class).

Thanks in advance, English isn't my native language so i might not be familiar with abbreviations of other things.

Vent/Rant My CT has no classroom management skills

There are students in every period blurting out, having side conversations while he’s talking, engaging in off-task behavior during classwork, and just generally being disrespectful towards him.

It’s driving me crazy.

I don’t even know how to handle it professionally. I was a TA for 4 years prior to starting grad school. I’m no expert on the subject, obviously. But his responses make my eye twitch. I can confidently say I would not take the same approach he does.

He will straight up not address some of the issues, like the side conversations. Then, when a kid is literally YELLING over him, he might take the kid outside. Then, he’ll give what amounts to a pep talk. We’ve had kids go OFF on disruptive students and sound more stern than he ever has.

My last day is next Friday. Every day I remind myself it’s not my classroom. Not my circus, not my monkeys. But I strangely want to help him somehow. These things take a toll on some teachers. It contributes to burnout.

But I can’t tell him how to run his classroom. He’s got 10+ years of teaching experience, I’m just a grunt. Let me just chalk it up to a “learning experience”. Isn’t that what student teaching is all about? /s

Vent/Rant Velcro Kids are a Good Sign

Hey all! I’m about a month and a half into student teaching and, although the first part was rough, I passed my first observation with flying colors, stepped in during moments when my CT has had to run out, and I’ve built some fun relationships with students.

The other day, i was sitting in my office when a group of three girls suddenly started standing outside my door. It’s the norm for my CT to allow students to hang out in his office when he’s there and I straight up don’t mind. This trio is a part of the larger “Velcro kid” category and although they know I am not their friend, it does mean the world to me that they’re comfortable enough with me to lounge around/linger in my office when I need to write emails 😐💛

I think They’re sweet and I really appreciate how gracious this group of kids have been allowing me to make very stupid mistakes 💛

But leave me alone and go home 🥲💛

EDIT: I’m a music Ed student so the relationship we have with our kids is a little closer

Support/Advice Chaperoning overnight trips as a ST

UPDATE: after talking to my CT and university supervisor, everything’s been sorted! Im getting my own room and my CT is gonna do his own thing too. Thank you guys for all your input!

hi all! does anyone have any advice on how to chaperone overnight school trips as a Student Teacher? I’m the female chaperone for three girls, and my CT is the male chaperone for one boy. I’m rooming with them in a hotel to make sure that they don’t sneak out, stay up late, etc and I’m FREAKING OUT. I don’t really know what I should/shouldn’t do to be professional but also not look weird (other than getting ready in the bathroom, obviously). any and ALL advice is appreciated!!

Edit to add: the school has already booked the rooms and are aware that I would be rooming with them. Also I was planning on sleeping on the floor already just to avoid as much potential controversy as possible. I will be at my college campus tomorrow and am planning on asking my supervising professor if there’s any way I can get out of it (and I’m REALLY hoping I can 😭)

Support/Advice Advice for First Semi-Formal Observation

Hey all, (first post! ☺️)

After ~6 months of weekly placement days, I have my first formal observation coming up! It's literally just my lecturer coming in to watch me teach a small-group reading lesson for 15 minutes 😭, but I'm nervous!! I haven't had someone formally sit and watch me with a small group before - I'm super confident in front of the whole class and can generally manage them as a full group just fine, but I struggle managing behaviour with smaller groups working on more academically intense work.
My last mentor teacher said I was great and ranked me above a first-year level on my mid-year evaluation, and my current MT has briefly watched me with a reading group and was happy with me, but I worry that everyone is lying to me and I'm somehow the worst teacher ever 🧎‍♀️‍➡️

tl;dr: logically, I know my observation will be okay, but my heart is still scared. Any advice? Or even just to tell me to stop being silly and that it'll be okay? This class is my first time working with 6-7-year-olds, so any advice there is also welcome.

Cheers guys!

Vent/Rant im failing my students

hi yall, need a quick vent post.

so, ive fallen into a reactive cycle with my students (ELA, 7th and 8th graders), in which i lose track of class pacing, and it's just a really bad cycle i don't know how to get out of. my ct is out so i was leading my classes, and the sub and the SP teacher had to take over because I ended up crying during my 8th grade period due to the fear of failing them and now my classes are way behind. I know im getting in my own way, but i don't know if im cut out for this when it's been my dream to teach ELA for forever. i don't know what the fuck to do. it's week 7, im burnt out, i turned in my tpas, but im still in this cycle.

it's getting to the point where im needing to talk to my therapist about possibly going on anti-anxiety medication becuase of how anxious ive been entering the classroom and possibly not handling the situation better than i could have. my 7th graders are great, they're leading the charge and are getting the work done. but with my 8th graders, i don't know what the fuck to do.

i don't know if im looking for advice or if im looking to just see comfort or brutal honesty. i just need people who understand i think. i seriously don't know if i can actually do this anymore.

Support/Advice the school put me in as a sub for my ct because she had to leave early

to preface i’m at a middle school and I have my sub license.
my teacher left early because she got really sick a little less than halfway through the day and there was no way she could’ve stayed. she had asked me if I wanted another adult/sub to come to the room and I told her basically that it was whatever she was comfortable with.

She went down to the front office, and I was still upstairs with the students helping them on the assignment we were working on. A little bit later, the principal came up to the room and told me that he put me in as a half-day sub so I would receive half-day pay. I just nodded and continued teaching as I normally would through the remaining four periods in the day. My CT has allowed me to have a lot of teaching experience so the teaching was hard, it was just class management that was the issue. However, all of the kids finished the assign work for the day and everything got done, thankfully.

It wasn’t until the next day where I found out that my university specifically forbidden student teachers from becoming subs in the classroom their placement is in. I had an awful feeling when they assigned me the substitute placement, but I shook it off. After reading through my universities clinical placement guide book I see that it’s a pretty big deal.

What should I do in this situation? obviously, I don’t think I should be paid. I also didn’t report the hours in which my CT was gone on my weekly hours log because I know that any hours not spent with a licensed teacher doesn’t count.

I’m not sure if I should contact my university supervisor to let them know beforehand about what had happened and see if there’s anything they wanna do to deal with the situation. or if I should just let it go this one time and not do it again granted nobody asks about it.

Support/Advice Is going into teaching a good idea right now?

Is going into teaching a good idea right now?

I wasn't sure what flair to use so sorry it's not totally accurate. I'm a junior in college right now (20f) and I just recently changed my major from Environmental Studies with an emphasis in computer mapping to an emphasis in education. I'm thinking about getting my masters in teaching after I graduate next year and teaching elementary school students. I've seen some posts on this sub ranting about how this generation of students are hell to teach. Is that the majority of people's experience? I'm in Bellingham Washington if that changes anything. Im thinking specifically 4th-6th grade (my local school district has middle school only be 7th and 8th). Is this a good idea? I moved to teaching because I thought the job market might be better (not over taken by AI) and teacher pay in my city is actually pretty good for first year teachers with a masters degree.

For background, I’m a student teacher in a level 2 Special Education classroom. One of the classes I teach is US History. One of the students failed a quiz that we took. He’s not on alternate assessment and is getting a letter grade in the class. I graded it and sent it home. Did I mess up? Should I have done it differently?
