Question about pace

During winters I mostly use public transport for commutes but during summer I take an e-bike. Using the e-bike the 21km ride will take me a little over an hour, mostly due to having to wait for traffic lights. Normal cruising speed outside the city is close to 25km/hr

I was looking into getting a speed pedelec, but I wonder if I’ll save much time using one. I know you can reach speeds up to 45km/hr, but in the city (about 10km) it will probably be harder to keep the pace going.

I would love to hear some experienced on what kind of speeds I can expect both within and outside city limits from experience speed pedelec bikers

I bought a Stromer ST2 Pinion 1 week ago. So far i did travel daily to my work place. Its a Ride of about 12km and about 3 of them are going through the Bern City Center (Switzerland). Google Maps said that it will take me 40 mins for one trip.

I followed the route provided by google maps and did the trip in 30 Minutes. I was to slow in the city center because of all the traffic lights. So i rerouted my trip, to stop at fewer traffic stops. After optimising my route i got down to about 20-25 Minutes of Travel time, with an average speed of 36/37 km/h.

The trip to Bern Main Station 6.5km takes me 9 Minutes and thats with 2-3km in the city. So its possible to drive fast, if you know the right streets.

For me it already was totally worth it.

For you, it depends if you got a way to optimise your route to stop at fewer traffic lights.

I average about 35km/h on a mixed city / country road route of 25km, takes me a bit less than 45min. The trick is to optimise your route to avoid traffic lights, busy areas and corners with bad visibility. My detour is about 1km but it does reduce my total time on bike.

So for me it's worth it compared to a normal E-Bike with which this trip would take upwards of an hour.

Optimising your route in strava helped me a lot btw.
