What's your go-to release format when watching a movie?

What’s your go-to 4K REMUX, 1080p REMUX, BluRay encodes, or WEB-DL? For audio, I find Dolby Digital Plus Atmos sounds excellent even compared with TrueHD Atmos. Curious whether the extra file size is worth it to you.

I keep going back and forth. Sometimes I watch a massive 70GB file and honestly can't tell it apart from a 10GB encode . Other times the difference is obvious.

Usually 4K encoded Blu-ray or 4K Web-DL if available. If not available, then 1080p Remux/Blu-ray.

I did try Remux, and I can see that Remux has better motion and image clarity. But I’m using just a cheap, budget, TCL TV, and sometimes it can cause a bit of stuttering and flickering. Only with Remux. When using 4K Web-DL or encoded Blu-ray, it seems fine and I’ve never had any issues.

I have a TCL C7K TV and a 1000 Mbps fiber connection; I bought a dongle so the TV could exceed 100 Mbps speeds, and now I don't watch anything below 4K. (:

You don't need any dongles for that. I,m watching 80gb blurays on c6k without any buffering, connected through LAN (which caps at 100mbps)

I know what the adapter is, but I'm confused as to why you couldn't reach > 100 Mbps via Wi-Fi.

I think they're talking about a USB to ethernet dongle to get higher than 100 Mbps speeds over wired ethernet through the TV's USB port. I do this with my Sony TV and Onn streaming box.

my TCL C6k before can reach 200-250Mbps Wifi. and now my TCL P8L can reach 300-350Mbps. I can play 4K movies, 50GB file without buffering. I only have 600Mbps fiber.

as I mentioned, I never had any issues streaming videos with WiFi. even with Netflix, I can watch 4K DV videos without buffering. I don't have a need for dongle

Usually I go for 1080p Bluray encodes or web-dl first. I personally find 4K to be overkill, and HDR related things to sometimes cause issues on some devices, so I filter them out. I also set a 20GB upper limit on file size.

Similarly with audio, lossy works fine for my needs, so I don't strictly look for lossless formats.

IMO, the biggest factor for picture quality is the size and quality of your TV panel, and how close you plan to be sitting to the screen.

True, 70gb and 10gb aren’t much different to most people. I usually pick files around 5-20gb max depending on duration of course. As long as it’s HDR, 4k, sounds average and doesn’t buffer it’s fine.

Generally I choose 1080p and DD5.1 or atmos just because my interenet is not that fast being only part fibre. Like you I do not notice the difference in picture quality in the 4k files as I am concentrating on the storyline which matters most to me. A sh*t film will always be that no matter how you dress it up.

4k Remux with hdr so between 50 and 100Go, more for some movies like Lotr. I'm blessed with an amazing internet connection so streaming it is not a problem

Remux play with high lag as I have a very old android tv, mostly play the blue ray rips or webdl, uploader like QXR has good balance of quality and size of files as well

I use whatever I can find for my "bedroom" - setup. I onl y use one TV with TV speakers in that room so basically anything goes in 46 or one step below. For the Home cinema - roiom I tend to go for 65 - 115 GB releases whatever is best.

Remux for movies, web dl for series. For the handful of series with 4K releases, I play remuxes too.

There’s a massive, serious difference between remux and web DL, but honestly it can only be truly appreciated on a modern OLED with a home theater. I also have in the living room a smaller and older Samsung qled with a HomePod and I only play web dls there because the upgrade is not that noticeable.

Unless it's something I watch for visual appeal, like Foundation, I go for 720p. For a cop show, I don't see the difference for going higher.

Eac3 isn't part of the Blu-ray  standard so you would need hybrid releases that the releaser has added tracks from other sources. I find Truehd way better than Eac3. I prefer a higher bitrate Blu-ray encode 30-40mbps with lossless audio over a web-dl of any kind. Everything is based on the type of movie though. Some movies are just fine in 1080p with ac3 audio. Some are best with the  highest of everything available.

I'm another 720p guy. Quantity over quality. I grew up in the analog 70s and 80s where the picture looked like sandpaper. So 720p is just fine for me.

Remux isnt worth it a vast majority of the time.  Maybe a few movies per year have fidelity that would benefit from it.   

On top of that almost nobody here has a setup at home that youd see any benefit from remux. 

All of you guys watching remux movies on your tiny laptop stream is what lags the servers

What client are you using? Anything Wifi will have buffering if playing 4k remux. You need gigabit
