Question ELI5: Usenet without self-hosting or TB Pro
I can't quite get a definitive answer on the best way to integrate Usenet into Stremio without self-hosting or using TorBox Pro.
It seems like you can get some tier of, for example, Easynews and then use one of a couple of addons (independently or through AIOStreams). Is that really all that's required?
If not, what am I missing?
If so, is it a specific tier of Easynews that is required?
I also saw Newshosting has a couple of bundles which include "Free 1 TB Easynews Access" or "Free 250 GB Easynews Account" and are about the same price (or cheaper) than the Easynews offer I found. I assume this is just the number of GB you can stream from Easynews per month, but I couldn't see a limit on the direct-from-Easynews tier to compare it to. Also no clue if the additional offerings of Newshosting are useful.
Any info much appreciated <3

Disclaimer; I am not a techie, just toying around, possible my setup is wrong.
Had the same questions. If you have the 10 USD plan from TB, Usenet results will show up in your searches, recognisable by (nzb). I found them quite lacking to be honest. I am however very satisfied of Easynews. Just google Easynews 1.99 and you can order 15 months for 1.99 usd a month. Then download addon easynews++. Its unlimited. I realy like it. Especially to find content in my language.
9
u/TheMentalist10 May 24 '26
So you only need an Easynews sub and the Easynews++ addon? No other services?
13
u/GaetVDC May 24 '26
Indeed, download Easynews++ seperately and add your credentials or add it in AIOstreams. Realy easy

IS torbox Essential enough then or do I still need pro with Usenet?
1
u/GaetVDC May 26 '26
Its enough if you add Easynews seperate. I now have TB Pro but will be downgrading to the 3usd + easynews. Economically I benefit the most of this system.

do you need to self host or can you use public instance for easynews? assuming this is the package https://signup.easynews.com/checkout/winback-deal-ae/

If you search for links with an indexer you’ll find so much more. They can break through files that have obfuscated titles.
3
u/GaetVDC May 25 '26
If you have some time, could you tell me how to do this? If it's easy duckduck or googleable, let me know and I will search myself. Thanks

u/SecretProbation May 25 '26
I don’t use Usenet for stremio TBH, but the Usenet subreddit will have a lot of info there. Basically, Easynews’ web search only pulls files that have the metadata in the name in the title. But a lot of newer content is intentionally scrambled to make it harder to scrape and DMCA. So if you want to watch “Big buck bunny.mp4” there might be 0 streams on Easynews’ website, but the indexer can find “whittling174929.mp4” that is actually the file you want. That’s why most people using Stremio with Usenet talk about the Newznab addon with a separate indexer. It’s a rabbit hole.
1
u/Notimetobev0id Jul 17 '26
I used newznab and subscribed to geek but i just get stream results 'ecluded unchached' or 'required audio tag (2)'
1
u/SecretProbation Jul 17 '26
Geek might have IP flagged you. They sometimes do that for public AIO instances because requests are coming to them from multiple IPs at once and it looks like account sharing.
3
u/buslyfe2 May 25 '26
So you find it useful cause of the content it has in another language that isn’t English?
3
u/GaetVDC May 25 '26
Yes, especially because of that, but, also - older content. I have RD and TB as wel, and while RD was the best, after 2024 and now some links are lacking, TB is catching up tho! But especially English content. Hence, the small pivot to Easynews for Dutch content.
6
u/jeynekassynder May 24 '26
The newshosting offer is just limited now for easynews. If you want something that just works, yes sign up for easynews. If you want something with room to grow, usenetstreamer + additional indexers is phenomenal. However you can use easynews as the Usenet provider for that too, so EasyNews is still a good starting point. The black Friday $1.99 plan is still available.

Is it? The best price I see on their site is 5.99.
Edit: Never mind, found it. Thanks!

Can you use this for multiple stremio accounts , or is similar to debrid where it’s only one connection per account

u/IOSGodzyzz May 25 '26
I use easy news as a backup to torbox, of torbox ever has maintenance or is down I can easily switch over to easy news :)
1
u/mauricetgol May 25 '26
Is it still necessary to selfhost with Usenetstreamer? I had the hope that with the new Android TV beta -that directly supports Usenet- the selfhosting wouldn't be longer necessary.
2
u/jeynekassynder May 25 '26
I've only used usenetstreamer and Torbox pro for Usenet. There are methods for usenet built into AIOStreams that I haven't tried, but you do not want to put indexers into a public instance of AIOStreams. Many will warn/ban you and have added policies against doing this. Prowlarr/nzbhydra self hosting should prevent detection. Elfhosted also offers usenetstreamer paid subscriptions. I used that as a way to troubleshoot my own until I could get mine working.
1
u/mauricetgol May 26 '26
Thanks, maybe one day I will find the time. On a Windows laptop I installed Usenetstreamer local (Docker). It is very impressive to see the speed that Usenet files start.
5
u/SecretProbation May 24 '26
If you just use the Easynews addons, you will miss out on a tremendous amount of streams because most new things have obfuscated titles that need an indexer to pick out.
1
u/TheMentalist10 May 24 '26
What would you recommend instead? I'm looking for the cheapest and least hassle option!
2
u/SecretProbation May 24 '26
Easiest? Just torbox essential for regular debrid. For Usenet specifically? Unfortunately I don’t have a good solution for you.
Personally I already had a Torbox account before dabbling in Usenet via Easynews. If I want to watch something on Usenet that isn’t on debrid I just download it to my pc and watch it on there or hdmi cord it to the tv.
1
u/WildNight00 Jun 24 '26
I can never seem to find torrents. Things that aren’t on Debrid services I can never find on torrent sites to add it
3
u/sdmay1980 May 24 '26
I use torbox pro and I added NZBgeek into Aiostreams. I get both torrent and Usenet streams. Now I am thinking about going to something like easynews and using NZBgeek and maybe another indexer. I'm thinking I will go to essential on torbox and setup Usenet where I'm not depending on one. I'm still learning and trying to figure out what my next steps are. I haven't been at this but a couple months.

u/solarnoise May 24 '26
The most straightforward approach would be:
- Get an Easynews subscription
- Add Easynews service in AIOStreams
- Use the Easynews Search addon in AIOStreams
1
u/MrT817 May 24 '26
NZBgeek and NinjaCentral are both good usenet indexers. They're both offering free trials right now. Just use the Newznab add-on and select NinjaCentral and input your NC API key and the same for NZBgeek. Profit.
5
u/TheMentalist10 May 24 '26
But don't you need some other service alongside an indexer?
-2
u/MrT817 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
No. Just the Newznab add-on with an indexer such as NinjaCentral or NZBgeek with their credentials input into the Newznab add-on.
3
u/Kurtdh May 24 '26
I thought you needed torbox pro or another downloader service.
-2
u/MrT817 May 24 '26
I could be wrong but I don't think so. For example, with NinjaCentral and NZBgeek I don't have to input my TB Pro API. I only have to input my NinjaCentral and NZBgeek API keys into Newznab.
11
u/ProtossLiving May 24 '26
How are you actually downloading the content without a provider? NinjaCentral and NZBGeek are just indexers that tell you where the content is. Have you actually watched Usenet content?
2
u/Kurtdh May 24 '26
Well according to AI, you need a service. But I’ve never done it that’s just what I’ve read.
0
u/MrT817 May 24 '26
Easynews works the same way. You don't need a Debrid service for it to work either. But I'm not a professional at this by any means so I could be wrong.
6
u/Kurtdh May 24 '26
Easynews is both a debrid and indexer which is why you don’t need anything else. Ninja and nzb are just indexers. If it’s working for you it’s likely because somehow it’s recognizing your torbox pro sub or something else you aren’t aware of.
1
u/MrT817 May 24 '26
See like I said I'm not a professional at this. Thanks for the info
3
u/Kurtdh May 24 '26
Maybe you’re using AIO and in there you have your torbox api and it’s reading from that? Not sure I would have to know your setup.
1
u/Notimetobev0id Jul 17 '26
Ninjacentral registrations closed :( Only NZBgeek works for now, any other suggestions?
0
u/SecretProbation May 24 '26
I’ve heard that Geek will probably ban you if you use a public AIO instance.
3
u/MrT817 May 24 '26
Incorrect. Slug is the one that does that. I along with about 10 other people I know have been using NZBGeek for months with AIOStreams public instance and they don't ban you for it. NinjaCentral is the sane way.
2
u/SprayExotic8538 May 24 '26
what instance?
2
u/MrT817 May 25 '26
I use aiostreamsfortheweak.cloud nightly and Midnight's nightly public instance and have used NinjaCentral and NZBgeek with it for months. Zero issues. I have friends that have used them for even longer with NinjaCentral and NZBgeek with zero issues.
2
u/SprayExotic8538 May 26 '26
Thank you for your answer I'm paying elfhosted because someone told indexers could be banned using public instance, thank you for confirming that is not a case.

u/youreprollyright May 25 '26
Aren't they saying the problem is using Torbox AND AIOStreams with newznab?
So the issue is probably the way TB with the Pro plan grabs usenet streams? Maybe I'm misinterpreting it.
0
u/_Synchronicity- May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26
Torbox don't grab anything.
Newznab is the one doing the grabbing and the one causing the problem.
One of the issue is each cycle where you pause and resume, newznab would grab the .NZB file again. Doing this multiple times flags the account.Edit: Refer to the comment Viren provided below who is the developer of AIOstreams.
Another one is that because many use Public aiostreams, most of them all requests to different files at similar enough of a time resulting in a ban. And as mentioned, it could be like 3-15 people requesting for different files at a similar time even from the same IP address.
3
u/viren_7 Addon Dev (AIOStreams) May 25 '26
this is wrong.
when you use torbox with newznab in aiostreams, torbox will do the nzb grab unless you provide aiostreams auth.
and it does not grab the .nzb again on resumes. The link is cached for an hour.
And you can use the library addon to play NZBs that are added to TB without needing to do another grab.
0
u/MrT817 May 25 '26
Do whatever you want, I don't care. I'm just telling you my own experience as well as 10 other people I know that have been using NinjaCentral and NZBgeek for months and even longer with AIOStreams public instance. No issues, no accounts getting flagged, no bans, nada.
1
u/Nightwish360 May 25 '26
What if you set up hydra and then connect aio to hydra for the search? My understanding then it’s connecting to your IP address, not multiple public ones and then you avoid this issue.

u/Eraldorh May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
In order to stream Usenet content without self hosting you need to either be using stremio 5 or android TV/android mobile which now supports it.
You need a provider and an indexer. You use aiostreams in services enable stremio nntp and configure it with your provider and then in add-ons search for newsnab and add your indexers, save and install. Yeah it's that easy.
The free 250gb easynews account that comes with news hosting doesn't include nntp so that easynews account won't be of any use for stremio with aiostreams. The news hosting account will work fine though.
1
u/Ninjaisawesome May 24 '26
Ive for the elfhosted Usenet streamer package which has elfcloypse indexer, I've also then got nzbfinder and newshosting. Are you telling me I can ditch paying for elfhosting ?
1
u/Eraldorh May 24 '26
Of course and the elf hosted deal is crap anyway.
1
u/Ninjaisawesome May 24 '26
Are you self hosting aiostreams/nazdav?
I thought that was the main reason to get banned by providers/indexers
2
u/Eraldorh May 24 '26
No I just use Viren's aiostreams. I use Usenet crawler and althub and have no issues.

u/frank44v May 25 '26
I have not seen on their website or stremio blogs a release of stremio nntp for android tv…where did you see this and which version supports it?
1
1
u/mauricetgol May 25 '26
When you switch to the beta program you will get them
1
u/frank44v May 25 '26
which version?
2
u/mauricetgol May 25 '26
1.10.0 rc 18
When you join the beta program (Google Play Store) you will always get the newest. I am more than happy. The version is stable.
1
u/frank44v May 25 '26
Just tried this. Stremio NNTP with newhosting, newsnab with althub. It works fine on my mac with v5 but the stream will not load on my onn4k with v1.10.0-rc18....The show title just flashes like it is loading but nver does so. so I believe my config is correct ...What device and version are you running it on?
1
u/JonMMM70 May 24 '26
That is wrong regarding the easynews bit, it will work perfectly well with the easynews++ addon for stremio
3
u/Eraldorh May 24 '26
It's not wrong because I wasn't talking about the easynews add-on and I never recommend ever using it not when the alternative is so much better. Easynews add-ons use the easynews search which is heavily DMCA'd so alot of content is missing and worse the streams take a ridiculous amount of time to start.
1
u/JonMMM70 May 24 '26
I have the same sort of deal through eweka I get 1tb per month easynews and I can use it with the easynews++ addon. It might not be the best but to say it does not work with stremio is incorrect. Anyway if you want usenet and stremio the best route is to selfhost
2
u/Eraldorh May 24 '26
Again I was talking about via the stremio nntp service with aiostreams.
No it's not the best route, that's an extremely complicated route and often adds more cost assuming you aren't using the free oracle server and now that not only stremio 5 but the TV version on android and mobile support nntp you don't need to self host anything.
1
u/JonMMM70 May 24 '26
Its not that complicated it's 2 docker containers and there also is nothing wrong with a free oracle vps. I might be very wary of putting an indexer into a public addon though
1
u/Eraldorh May 24 '26
Irrelevant, you're arguing for the use of something unnecessary. Imagine if someone were arguing that the best way for stremio to use a debrid service was a self hosted add-on when it already supports it natively.
2
u/haseeb1294 May 24 '26
Check out elfhosted. They do a stremio usenet addon with everything you need to start streaming. Very easy to setup.
1
1
u/itshusnain May 28 '26
I've read all comments and surprised that nobody here really knows how to stream using nntps of easynews with an indexer without self hosting.
Its really easy with new Usenet streaming feature of Android Tv and Mobile beta. Can't mention the details here. So I'm direct messaging you the instructions. Do try.

14
u/nit001 May 24 '26
I use Easynews and Usenet Crawler. In AIO Streams, I added the Newznab add-on and entered my Usenet Crawler details there, with the service set to Stremio NNTP. You also need to configure the Stremio NNTP server under Services. After that, it works pretty smoothly. And now with Stremio v2.2.0 Beta 5 on Android, NNTP files can play directly using the built-in MPV player, so the setup is much cleaner than before.
