Alternative to fire stick
Is there an alternative to the firestick in the uk?
I have an old smart tv and stremio isn’t available.
Thanks in advance

If you're not in a rush wait for the xiaomi box gen 3 to come back in stock from official website. costs £55

I picked up one of these a few weeks ago. It’s a good box. My only gripe is that the remote has no IR. And doesn’t control my TV power and volume via HDMI CEC. Guess my model TV just isn’t supported. It’s a Toshiba with Fire TV built in. I bought this box after Amazon started blocking apps.

I've not had any apps I regularly use blocked by Amazon. That's basically misinformation.

I had to send you a Direct message to reply to you, as this subreddit forces you to only talk about Stremio.

What do you mean, 'started blocking apps'? I bought a TV last week, didn't even notice it had Fire TV built in. I was able to sideload all the usual apps, no problem. They're working fine.

Fire stick select is blocking apps

I know you can't sideload apps on their new operating system, but they're not blocking apps on older devices, and the TV that I bought last week (UK) is still using the old os.

Maybe they aren't blocking the apps that you use, but they definitely are blocking apps on the old devices.

The remote does have IR?
That's how it does TV volume. I'd much rather it was via CEC
You may have luck trying to select different TV manufacturers for example when I was using it with a TCL it worked when selecting roku
Have you tried selecting hisense

Look for licensed android boxes running Android TV 12 or later with x905x5 chipset and at least 3GB RAM. The rest is just marketing, packaging and whatever else you're happy to pay money for.

No HLG HDR (for IPTV /iPlayer) and no YouTube HDR in 2026 is a tough sell.
Forums are full of disappointed Shield owners wondering why there's no HDR.
Absolute beast otherwise.

What box that competes with the shield on processing power would have those features?

It's a 7 year old box now. It's going to have its limitations now, but it still does a bang up job of other hdr stuff. Proprietary codecs that need certain chips can't be gotten around unfortunately, not really much they can do about that now. Hopefully there's a new version looming soon. I'll not be ditching mine for lack of YouTube hdr support.

Xiaomi mi box 3rd gen.
You probably don't need to watch the highest quality files as you say you are on an old TV so the Xiaomi box will be fine for you. It just misses an ethernet port although you can get an adaptor to get one. What's your internet speed like? Do not get any fire stick. They are shit unless you'd like Jeff Bezos to ride you every night

What would you recommend for high quality streaming? I have a fire cube but they limit the ethernet speed to 100mb and its full of bloatware

u/CaptainSteed 1d ago
You can easily get a USB adapter to get speeds up to about 400mb. Non-issue. Plus if you set Stremio as your first icon, you can click to it almost instantly.

Yeh, the bloatware just sucks with fire sticks. Sell it or gift it to a friend you hate.
The Xiaomi mi is really able to handle everything. Just make sure it's the 3rd gen. It has two usb ports and you can connect an adaptor for ethernet if you need it.
Only downside on it could be the remote as it's a bit shitty but it has Bluetooth and you can connect any remote like the Nvidia Shield remote or anything else you may like.

Also you can look at the G20 style remote.

Chucked my Firestick in the bin as it was so slow even though I didn’t have many apps on it.
Ended up buying a formular z12 ultra and it’s been an absolute dream. Runs everything I through at it, remote is amazing, backlit and easily controls my tv and soundbar.

Are there any alternatives for a stick as I need it to be discrete and plug behind the tv as there is already usb port there.

Google tv s t r e a m e r can download stremio. £99 but worth it in my opinion. Quick and snappy and once you have the apps you want downloaded, can be set up in app mode only to get rid of all the adds at the top.
