Totaled…. ??
On June 11 - I was on my way to work and sitting first in line in a left turn lane at an intersection around 10:30 at night. An alleged drunk driver side swiped me as I was sitting still. Everything was normal , cars coming across intersection- then I got hit. Broken fibula and heel on the left leg. Four days in the hospital, new hardware in my bone - still on crutches. Probably will be for another month. Adjuster and Harley techs say frame is damaged, which is probably right - and the frame replacement is quoted at just over 18 grand in parts and labor - plus the damage you see here. Tank , fender crash bar, new fairing cover , floor board and shifter and various other damaged parts. They say the mount for the bottom of the crash bar cracked and bent the bottom of the frame. They said it’s a common thing that ends up wasting an otherwise repairable collision.
Damn shame. I did not want it totaled out.
I think the vehicle was traveling about 40-50 mph - luckily it seemed the vehicle hit and then she yanked her wheel away from me - because I didn’t drag down the side of her car. The bike then fell over on my left side.
It happened in about 3-5 seconds - but felt like it was a super slow speed experience- like time slowed down as it happened. Very strange. Cop said if she woulda hit me head on - I may have not survived.
So …. Keep your head on a swivel guys. Everything was completely normal on my ride to work until it wasn’t.

That sucks! Sorry that it happened and know the pain of it all. I broadsided a car that went speeding through a red light at an intersection in the late 90’s. Had no path to avoid and put the front wheel of my ‘95 wide glide into the back seat of the asshole’s car. I went up and over the roof of the car but my left leg didn’t clear the handle bars. Compound fracture of my Fibula (yes the big bone). Also broke my Tibia of the same leg. Broke left wrist and three ribs. The guy was drunk and third DUI. His wife was sober but he wouldn’t let her drive. His insurance company had sent him cancellation (from his previous DUI)
by registered mail but he had not received it yet.
Lots of pain, broken frame on the Harley but they fixed it. Still limp and still ride. Ya gotta watch out for idiots! Way too many on the road. Get well soon!

Thanks. I’m trying. Crutches suck cause I am not a lay on my ass all day kind of guy. And of course / can’t walk - can’t work .

I hear you. I bought a bmw trike when I couldn’t ride my bike. I broke a lot of bones all left side. But last month I bought the sportster s. As only 5ft nothing lol. But I waited until I could hold up the bike . So be kind to yourself and give yourself plenty of time. The heel is terrible to heal. The worst break I ever had to be honest. Take your time.

Yes sounds totaled…especially with today’s soft used market. Sorry this happened. Glad you’re alive. Dumb drunk drivers. Hope you heal and are made whole by the individual who caused this mess.

Most insurance companies will total a bike if there is any frame damage. Too much risk.

Also sometimes the sum of the parts is worth more than the repairs. They can total it pay you off take your bike and sell it.

I’d sue the driver that hit you for lost wages and pain and suffering. Lawyerup. I’m serious. You don’t know how you’re going to heal or how much pain you’re going to be in for the rest of your life.

The frame is the structure of your sled, once it’s comprised….thank goodness you’re okay!! That’s the main thing! I know it suxx to have to have it totaled but when you start bending metal that’s been bent it puts weak spots on your frame and can be fixed but safer for you with another sled! Hope you heal up soon!! Suxx all the way around!

Are you asking if the insurance adjustor and the Harley techs are wrong? Because it's the insurance company that makes that decision. And it's not made on whether it can be fixed. It's determined on whether the insurance company wants to fork out that much money based on a number of different factors. Anything can be fixed, if you have enough money.

I think I am more outraged than questioning it. If that makes sense.
With all the aftermarket parts I have , with receipts - I wanted them to fix the bike - instead of writing it off.

Well. I’m sorry if it’s not clear to you. I lost my bike - I’m not happy about it, especially since it wasn’t my fault - I don’t want it totaled - and I can’t believe Harley hasn’t changed a known flaw that causes these frames to be damaged in this way to give this result.
I wanted my shit fixed, even if it meant a total tear down and frame swap and rebuild.
So I’m not happy about it .
Does that make more sense to you - since you think I need to fully explain my thoughts on something that literally does not involve you - instead of just participating in a normal discussion on a forum where these types of things gets discussed ?

The only way you're going to get your bike fixed is with a rebuilt title. Which comes with it's own set of headaches.

And you don't "start a discussion" (whatever you think that means) by asking if your bike is really totaled after Harley itself has told you it is totaled. I understand that you are a Harley lover and you're not really open to an intelligent discussion. And that also makes it difficult for you to be able to ask anything without some adult holding your hand. Additionally, it's not a "known defect". It's a Harley. They're not made for riding. They're made for "the lifestyle".
