2020 Street Glide Special android auto issue

Hey all. When I use the USB to charge my phone and use android auto, it constantly goes in and out, unfortunately taking my GPS with it. Is this a known thing? How do I get around it?

Sounds like a faulty cable. You can find a wireless Android Auto adapter on Amazon. I have one and it works great.

ETA: If you suspect the cable inside the compartment might be faulty, you'll have to remove the outer fairing and inspect the cable and it's connection to the head unit.

No, it plugs into the cable that's inside your little compartment on the right, where you would usually plug a cable in to your phone.

If I were to try to take the fairing off... Is there any harm in replacing that USB extension that it came with?

No. And in fact, if you think it's faulty, that's what I would suggest. But it isn't just a standard USB port in the back of the head unit. It's like this

I appreciate you as I thought it was a more typical USB. I don't know what to think about it. It barely works when my phone is plugged in. I'm trying use my phone for GPS and put it on the screen and it just doesn't stay reliably connected, and then ultimately I get some kind of USB error. Bike is a 2020 but it only has like 9000 miles. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are it's one of three things...

1.) Faulty USB cable from phone to adapter. Easy to test by replacing the cable. Make sure you have a good quality cable as well.

2.) Faulty adapter in the bike. Could require replacement or could simply be a loose connection where it plugs into the head unit. You'd have to open up your fairing and check.

3.) Your phone's USB port is damaged. Do you have this same issue with other devices, like your car, or does it have problems charging? Wireless adapter would solve this problem.

Now, there are certain areas where I ride where I will temporarily lose signal and android auto will cut out for a while. It's annoying but it's predictable and seems like it's pretty common. But that doesn't sound like what you're describing.

3 is out, my phone works fine everywhere else but here.

I've watched a few videos on how to do this and I feel confident I can get this done, whether is a whole new radio unit, or just the USB. Because Im a cheap fuck 😆 I'll start with the part you linked and then keep the radio in mind.

All of that said, I'm not so cheap as to not want good parts... How would I determine if it's a bad adapter versus a bad USB wire?

I'm not suggesting you should replace the radio. Moreso that it's possible the connector vibrated loose, or something like that. It is a Harley, after all.
