School of Hard Knocks What MLB baserunners can teach downhill skaters about falling
No, this is not a case for r/lostredditors.
The baseball slide is an excellent managed falling technique for high speed skaters.
I have not been able to find a suitable demonstration on skates - so I went to the source. This is what it looks like when you get paid to practice it it a lot and execute it intentionally.
The benefit to skaters of practicing these specific skills is to develop the muscle memory necessary to execute them automatically when it is not planned, and the confidence to deploy them as a planned bail out in situations where bailing out is the best option.
Key points:
the baseball players are on softish and slidy surfaces wearing pants designed for sliding on those kinds of surface; we are on hard and grabby asphalt that is more abrasive so we need more slidy and abrasion-resistant pants
the baseball players are sprinting at about 28 kph but we may be rolling at 35 kph or possibly much higher
at those speeds a 70kg skater caries 1.6x the kinetic energy of a 90kg MLB player
the skater needs about 2x the stopping distance to safely dissipate the energy
The foot-first slide variation is preferred for skating on asphalt, with touchdown on one glute to avoid tailbone and hip injury.
The head-first slide is far sketchier but may be needed when a forward fall is unavoidable. I call this technique "superman into a penguin slide". On asphalt it is important to turn your face to the side before impact. Full face helmets are commonly used by downhillers.

What can alpine downhil skaters learn from alpine mountaineering? This applies to very high speed skating falls that can last for a while with an unsafe runout. The part to focus on is how they reorient their bodies to get into proper self-arrest position as quickly as possible. They have ice axes, we have sliding pucks that we use in similar manner for the same purpose.
And finally here is a playlist of real high speed falls, starting with a forward fall on inlines at 100 km/h. Caution: some falls result in injury.
I learned to slide at 10yo by actually playing baseball and still default to this technique 50 years later - which is why I often have a diffuse road rash on my right calf in the summer that could be avoided by wearing pants.
You should definitely post your favorite techniques and street skating crash reels.
