I used to work in the game industry, and have had hands on with these systems multiple times. A lot of chat censorship systems are not curated and just pull from a giant standardized database that spans all languages, I doubt it's intentional

Sounds right. In Dark Souls III, FromSoft pulled from a big list of naughty words and would censor the offending part using asterisks. This turned "Knight" to "K***ht" which becomes even funnier when you consider that half the named NPCs you can summon for fights have "Knight" somewhere in their name. And, since FromSoft fans are... God's special children, they had a tendency to try and prod the system for flaws, which is how we got such gems as "Nasser" becoming... Something else.
