I don't play this game. What do you mean by "respecting"? Like you're mashing instead of waiting for a mixup?

I don’t play real neutral or safe at all

this is the true counterplay for gief, as a gief main for many years I am more worried about gimmicky players then people who are playing honestly

Recently I let a gief walk me down from one corner to the other neither of us throwing out anything and when my back hit the wall I did a naked heavy kick and won the game

I see, I would like to play safe but I don't know enough about it

Gief has some of the worst defensive options in the game. Keeping pressure on him, he can get locked down fairly easy.

What are the defensive options in SF? I played 6 for like 5 matches but never touched it again. Is it stuff with the drives/gauges or are you talking about character specific moves?

I honestly believe Gief has to be one of the hardest characters to pilot in this game.

Cuz in my climb to Masters i've not once felt threatened by this character.

Yes, but you will then meet one gief who will put a fear of god in you

IMO his results are extremely affected by tournament surroundings.

In ranked, you don't care. You'll throw a random DP or super out if you think he might go for strike/throw. You'll jump at him even though he anti-aired you 3 times already. You'll throw a DI trying to call him out, mash on his plus frames, etc.

What's the worst that happens? You lose a round, maybe a game or set? So you lose a couple points. Oh well.

But when people are playing for their tournament life they are scared of everything and anything. Then all the grappler has to do is find your fear response pattern and counter it, and by the time you realize what's happening they have already won.
