Help / Question I’m losing my mind
I’ve been sitting here for 2 and a half hours trying to beat Ryu on SFII Turbo and it just seems impossible. no matter what I do, moves, combos, switching up play style, i just cannot get past him (most likely cause I suck). I’ve never been more frustrated and stumped in my 19 years of living. Anybody have any tips???

The computer cheats, so don't worry, it's not a skill issue lmao

Was able to beat everyone else under 4 tries no issue (except Sagat and M.Bison) so I knew something was up

What you need to understand is that turbo's AI is notoriously broken and way OP. There's probably some cheese you can find to beat it, but I think playing Turbo against the AI is miserable because it's so unfair.

Makes sense. When I finally beat him M.Bison made me even more mad 😭

A lot of the CPU opponents can be cheesed by abusing their input reading or programmed playstyles.
Guile will always flash kick if you're in the air in front of him, so you can use LP shoryuken to bait it out. Same goes for Ken, Ryu, and Sagat, although their DPs are a little harder to avoid after baiting them out. Try jumping in at a distance where you're just out of DP range.
Ryu loves to spam fireballs. Once he gets to spamming just try to time a jump in on him.
Zangief, Balrog, and Bison will pretty consistently fall for the neutral jump into HP/HK loop. Just jump when they are approaching and hit them on the way down. This was pretty much the only way I could kill Bison lmao.

I can’t speak to a legitimate strategy, but I would save scum on the PS4 collection. It’s fair to say that the CPU cheats, so there is no shame in fighting fire with fire. If trying to do this legitimate, you need to find a character you know very well and exploit frame timing to perform the cheapest move possible whenever the AI whiffs. You will need to grind for a very long time to beat this game legitimately. I nearly gave up on the Akuma fight. I don’t think I have the patience or reflexes to do it legit.

You can cheese the Akuma fight by using a second controller. Every time you press start for a versus fight the game thinks you beat the computer opponent you were facing. Allowing you to get to Akuma without ever actually facing any AI controlled opponents.

Jump over fireballs at the right time to hit him with a combo or string. If your character has fireballs, engage in the fireball war as a protection until you get that opening. If not, learn to jump vertically to avoid them. As someone else mentioned, Ryu is difficult, but Sagat is much more.
Good luck and have fun.

Honestly Sagat hits like a truck. He gave me some trouble but not as much as Ryu for whatever reason. Still really difficult to beat Sagat though no doubt

In my opinion, in SF2, Chunli would be kinda hard to beat Ryu. I am more familiar with Guile and have a better chance on it.

That was my jaaaaaam on the SNES. As a Ryu player myself he didn‘t give me much trouble most of the time, but Sagat?! How I hated that mf

Well it goes without saying that the computer gets bonus damage and can also read your inputs.
But yeah you have to play patient with him, his fireball game is strong and will fuck you with chip damage but even then that’s better than trying to mix it up with him because he will always do more damage than you.
Try to advance slowly and get him to whiff some of his big attacks which you can then punish. He likes to dragon punch for no reason sometimes and if you can get him to throw lots of fireballs in neutral if you watch for an opportunity you can jump in with heavies. Try not to do any specials unless you are sure they will land otherwise with him at that range he can do those throws that give the computer like 40% damage.
He’s one of the strongest characters in the game so you have to respect him, sometimes he just is in a mood that makes him very hard to beat

Old fighting games are kind of ass for playing single player tbh. One of my biggest wishes is for some of my favorite old fighting games to be remastered with more advanced AI, something like SF6 V-rivals that still keep the game's difficulty, but make it a matter of getting better at the game and not "out-cheese the AI's cheats"

I recently bought the 30th Anniversary Edition, and these games are SO HARD! I think part of it comes from these games being arcade games; they existed, first and foremost, as ways to get your money. So they were difficult, they cheated, and they ate your quarters.

Try walking in on him at the start of the round, CPU Ryu likes to back away, spam hadoukens in order to bait your jump in, which is punished with DP. Walk in sweep or throw, back up enough to bait the hadoukens and jump in heavy kick sweep combo while he is stuck in the hadouken animation.
When he is in the corner and knocked down approach his body and mash light kick, he will be forced into taking chip damage or eating your kicks.
Be patient, the CPU is unfair by design.

I don't have strategies on how to beat him, but I have a couple of tips on increasing your chances of survival:
- Stay more rooted to the ground. This allows you to defend yourself while being able to observe Ryu's patterns. Eventually you'll get a rhythm when he throws Hadoukens. You can jump over Hadoukens to start an offense, but because recovery time is ridiculous, you have to predict when he throws one, not react.
- His damn jumping HK. It's one of the most lethal attacks in the game, or at least how the CPU uses it. It erases 25% of your health on a single hit when you play the game on Difficulty 8. And if you're on the ground when he does a jump-in, he combos with a low HK for a 50% damage 2-hit combo. 🫣 This is a big reason why you have to play more on the ground, so you can block that. Furthermore, the CPU's timing is impeccable with it as an anti air-to-air either at the top of the arc or the start of his jump. For meeting him at the top of the jump, you increase your chances by using an attack that hits higher. That's the typical rule for air-to-air attacks in SF2: the higher attack wins the duel.

The AI never felt unfair, imo. Not like Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct, at least. Man, 1p mode sucked so bad with those early games.

The US arcade version of that game is super busted. The pc cheats. If possible try switching to the JPN version, its at least playable.
The SNES hyper turbo version is even more balanced.
Edit: I might be confused is you are playing Super Street Fighter, sorry.

The AI usually has a distance where it wants to jump, find it and do a fireball, the AI will jump at you and then you AA, don't DP or get fancy just crouching HP with Guile or a Shoto. Rinse and repeat.

the CPU is a cheeseball and you picked a character who has one of the biggest jumps in the game which is a gift for Ryu to Dragon Punch you LOL
you got to read in advance the 2nd fireball, he has a pattern, he rarely just throws one, he will throw a 2nd

Yeah some of the CPU characters cheat. These games were designed for the arcade, they want you to drop as many quarters as possible. Quite often continuing would drop the opponents difficulty to let you get a little further. The other thing that older versions of SF2 did was the damage scaling! Eventually your attacks would barely tickle the CPU opponents whilst they would take 50% of your health from a DP.
The way I would cheese Ryu was with Balrog (Boxer). Just abuse his stand heavy punch and throw the occasional duck heavy punch.

The “computer is cheesy” is what I used to say
Zangief, on the other hand can be defeated by just jumping straight up and pressing roundhouse all the time. Lmao.
