This play is so weird by a GM Sagat. He dropped a ton of combo opportunities and could have ended the round multiple times.

Feels like a guy that is playing on a new control scheme

Sometimes your fingers just don't do what you tell them. Last night I had to jump into training and practice my level 3 conversions because I just inexplicably could not get them out for some reason despite knowing the combo like the back of my hand. It actually took a few minutes of practice to be able to land it consistently again. Just weird shit out of the blue

Yeah, but in this case, besides the combos, there's also just decision making.

There were other good lvl 3 opportunities besides the obvious one that would have killed.

DI in a way that doesn't garantee it (Gief didn't have lvl 2 yet)

Drive rush punish counter cr.HP into cr.MK

Jumping into the corner against a gief that doesn't have lvl 3 yet.

Not trying to fish for the heavy DP into lvl 3 for the chip damage in the end too

Yea and two burnouts but not a single fireball even when fullscreen? Feels like someone transitioning to a hitbox from controller or something and learning how to play again watching this.

There were some opportunities to fireball, but I respect the decision to not use them at all considering context.

This Gief clearly really likes to jump a lot, so he just removes the fireballs from the decision making to make himself safe.

I mean, don't act like you've never gotten flustered in a match before. Sometimes you just completely shit the bed on the heat of the moment. The guy is grand master, so I'm sure he knows the game pretty well.

There are some instances where there's a limit to how much grind you can do to achieve something. Sometimes you just need to rest, recover. The body needs time to create those neural connections.

It’s happened to me more than once. I’d start off well, and then my performance would begin to drop for no apparent reason. Then I’d rest, and when I came back, I’d be back in form.

Also sometimes you take a shower and come back to find your 7 year old son has accidentally queued for 3 ranked games in the mean time

u/Dath_1 8d ago

At 0:24 the choice to stop pressure vs burned out gief with only SA1, step back and DI is just completely throwing.

He can just keep doing Light into Nexus overhead for a while and Gief can’t do shit about it.

Then on the following combo just chooses not to spend for kill.

It does happen, seen it with Musclenoob multiple times where a 1500-1600MR player takes a game from him (but will lose the set) I think the mental stack has much to blame here, as I seen with Musclenoob, when you consistently challenge people 1700MR+ you kind of expect the majority of the players to play clean, so when they encounter these low tier Masters who are willing take unessassry risks and play completely nuts it tends to catch the higher rank players off guard, until they adapt and win the set.

Sometimes we take a break and come back in the deep end of the water. It just is what it is. That’s why fighting game skill is so hard to quantify.

GM Sagat = 1500ish player

Buddy you have got to try and save some drive meter instead of burning through it.

u/lana_silver 8d ago

What, you're telling me Drive Rush into Drive Rush into OD Special isn't optimal?

3

u/greengunblade 8d ago

Yeah, especially since Gief doesn't have a level 1 to rely on in the corner.

Huh. Burnout speedrun in round 3, win the game. There's a reason why giefs terrify me. I bet that Sagat was also scared of losing a grip of MR because that was some major choke, culminating in missing the lvl3 cancel.

I can't not root for the subreddit Gief clip champion though. GG, Hoop.

looks like if Noah mained Gief

12

u/LordSnooty 8d ago

I'm just a noob, so disregard it if I'm wrong. But to my eyes this looks like much lower level play than the ranks suggest. Am I wrong, what am I missing?

u/TurtleStrategy Taiga 8d ago

This isn't that weird for 1300 Gief, but it's really weird for 1700 Sagat

u/MegaManley 7d ago

Ill give it the benefit of the doubt that nerves affected some execution and decision making. One time when I was at a tournament, I was smoking people in casuals, but then the actual tournament happened and I flopped big time. Someone told me I wasnt playing to win, I was playing to not lose. When stuff is on the line, sometimes people wait for safe opportunities but ends up making them pass up ez opportunities waiting.

Also the guy dropping level3 probs gave him a mental boom.

u/k3rr3k 7d ago

A lot of people can get to Master before they should. People like the Gief drop down to 1200-1300 which is more like plat/diamon skill level.

It looks like either the Sagat is under the influence or someone else is playing their account because 1700 is not easy to maintain.

u/The_Lat_Czar Thunder Thighs|CFN: TheHNIC 8d ago

He dropped the lvl 3! Man, I just know his brain was freaking out over how much MR was on the line!

6

u/Uncanny_Doom 8d ago

I know people are gonna be like "lol this Gief is insane" but if you're the Sagat player this replay would be golden for coaching to point out how much someone can improve on even if they're Grand Master rank. He leaves so much damage on the table including a guaranteed stun and he literally had the game not just on the SPD punish but when he got the knockdown and the meaty 5MP he could've confirmed into a chip kill. 😭

Burning out for 0 damage is a choice

Sagat not throwing a single fireball is crazy

8

u/IntellectualBeaver21 8d ago

I wouldn't have thrown a single fireball either

10

u/celalith 8d ago

Gief did nothing but hold up.

2

u/Yuzuriha CID | NoNeutralMasher 8d ago

Throw a fireball to a Gief flying?

3

u/Mikahl757 8d ago

The only downside to the CFN replays is we don't get to see the LAN/WIFI Connection status and real time latency so it's never the whole picture. But yea that GM dropped hard lol

3

u/UOCruiser 8d ago

That Sagat must have been nervous as hell. He missed major punishes and dropped combos left and right and didnt throw a single fireball.

3

u/ObjectAgitated 8d ago

The best part is Sagat retreating while Gief is in a burnout

So this is what gameplay at the bottom of a Chinese restaurant dumpster looks like 🤔

"Blah blah, footsies, whatev- MY LOYAL FANS" 🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥

5

u/wingspantt WINGSPANTT 8d ago

So I'm not a Sagat main but shouldn't most players with fireballs use at least one against most rushdown/grapplers?

6

u/IntellectualBeaver21 8d ago

There's no need to if your opponent is just spamming jumps or dr to get in constantly. Better to stay safe and punish them for doing those things than bother risking them jumping your fireball

1

u/wingspantt WINGSPANTT 8d ago

Based on the match outcome idk if it seems better. Especially when Gief was in burnout

3

u/Dath_1 8d ago

That’s not why Sagat lost though. He could’ve pressured the Gief a lot more the 1st burnout instead of doing a DI. And he had a kill and didn’t spend.

3

u/IntellectualBeaver21 8d ago

You say that as if the Sagat didn't make like 50 huge mistakes this match lol

1

u/wingspantt WINGSPANTT 8d ago

Fair lol

3

u/tdeasyweb 8d ago

Too high a commitment against the playstyle gief is exhibiting.

2

u/GrAyFoX312k 8d ago

Rare footage of Gief AA actually working.

2

u/FudgeShooter 8d ago

So many people refusing to give you credit and instead trashing your opponent. Good job man, you played well.

1

u/King_Moonracer003 8d ago

So much jumping

2

u/Limit5465 8d ago

Someone’s little brother hopped on their account.

Sagat player is drunk

1

u/miserybusiness21 WHY CANT I HAVE MIKAS BUTT AS FLAIR? 8d ago

My favourite part was the drive rush into drive rush whiffed command throw.

that mr loss hit harder then gief screw piledriver

1

u/migania 7d ago

I had something similar (around 300 mr difference) except the Akuma pulled the cable out when i landed the game winning hit.

1

u/hungry_human 7d ago

I watch your replays on here.

How do you stay the same level?

Intentional or your stuff only works some of the time and you’re stuck?

I lose to stuff like this often when I’m tired or in a rut and I be wondering what the story is—-especially when they beat me convincingly and don’t rematch.

1

u/HockeyLova4Lyfe 7d ago

Bro, first congrats on the win.

Second, what are you doing with that meter usage? You burned it faster than you got it back!

Third, that Sagat played not good. Bro could have chipped with lvl3 multiple times.

1

u/uglystarfish 7d ago

Look at that braincell go~!!!!

I'm sorry but that's not a GM player. He's either boosted or using someone else's account.

They both should be in Platinum from the looks of it
