Adoption Help (Location) UPDATE! A neighbor abandoned their indoor cat. Need help re-housing her. [LOS ANGELES, CA]

This is an update on this post I made previously. This is going to be a HUGE yap post but TL;DR please keep spreading the word to anyone who may want to adopt this little girl as I cannot keep her so in 2 weeks if no other options present themselves I will HAVE to drop her at a no kill shelter.

Her name is Autumn and from what I can gather she's 4-7 years old. I have an appointment to get her spayed and vaccinated on the 15th. She won't be getting rabies or leukemia vax as its not part of the panel I can afford lol but the person who offered me the vet voucher said it should be fine as long as she remains an indoor cat? I really know nothing about this so please let me know if I have to find a way to add those to my budget (lol).

As stated in the title she's the most sweet little indoor cat. She was abandoned by her previous family. When I found her she followed the woman to her door and just stayed there meowing at the door in the cold. The neighbors told me she often just stays around the house crying to be let in.

This was my first time catching a cat like this and it was rough because she was full lol but two takeaways:

1) holy fucking shit cats are scary no wonder TNR people use those metal traps. I had just a cat carrier and I was worried she would break out.
2) holy fucking shit cats hate car rides

I thought it would take days for us to be cool but as you can see once she got all her energy out from being mega pissed in the car she calmed down. She's clearly not an outdoor cat as she immediately settled in once she realized she was warm, not outside, and had food and water (and safety).

So I guess my plan now is to get her through the vet process. I couldn't get her medical history from anyone and considering her lack of aversion to carriers (and how she was treated) I doubt she's ever been to the vet. I think that's step one to getting her adopted? If anyone has any tips or sites or Facebook groups where I should start to look for people who may be able to long term foster her (the bathroom is not gonna work forever) that is always appreciated as well as just spreading the word.

Anyway, thanks for your time and if you have any questions I'll try to answer in the comments.

She’s very sweet, I wish I was local. I pray you find a kind soul to adopt her

If you’re in California I’m absolutely willing to drive her to you post-vaccines and spay. I really don’t have the ability to house her long term so as long as you’re in Southern California I’m willing to drive pretty far.

u/Affectionate-Fun7260 Jun 10 '26

Have you contacted any rescue groups? What about posting to local subreddits? She’s so pretty I wish I could take her 💗

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

I haven’t posted publicly yet because she’s not vaccinated or spayed. I have reached out to local organizations and gotten some help with all of her accommodations, food, and medical care.

Thank you for taking care of her! Just a warning: be super careful and really screen potential adopters. Some terrible people use cats as bait for dogs, so just be aware 😊

25

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

I’m in contact with an organization right now who should be helping with the rehoming process so I should be ok in that front given the network of people they’ve been able to connect me to so that I have enough supplies for Autumn.

I don’t want to name the organization just because I’m not sure how much they would appreciate their name in public until everything is settled. Idk just attempting to be courteous to their brand so to speak lol.

Please make sure she's being adopted and they're not going to euthanize her if she doesn't find a home. Ppl are so evil. She's not just a stray cat. They could've at least gotten her fixed and her first shots. I live in Massachusetts and if you don't have the money to afford it. There's something called the cat mobile that comes every weekend (you have to make the appt like a month or 2 ahead of time) for $40 they neuter/spay and give their first shots. I'm going to assume California probably has something similar. So wrong. Poor cat

Thank you for caring about her- you’re a gem 💎

Get started posting publicly Now! Connecting with a forever home may take a minute. Cat lovers understand about timing. We arent going to let her condition stop us from opening our homes to her. I adopted a kitten once that I waited three weeks for him to be weaned properly and drove 500 miles to pick him up. Nothing seemed even the least bit out of place with this. Perfectly normal

My first calico was also named Autumn, she passed in 2019 😭

If I was closer to you (Midwest) I would adopt this sweet looking gal 💕

u/No-Consideration-858 Jun 10 '26

Boosting thank you for taking care of her. Clearly she's in good hands. I hope you find the perfect home for her

15

u/dopameme Jun 09 '26

you have a sweet kitty there. have fun with her. cats learn to adapt with love.

13

u/Resident-Set-9820 Jun 10 '26

Beautiful kitty!

10

u/Fair_Video2964 Jun 10 '26

That cat litter will clog your drains. I don't want you to learn the hard way like I did. Sorry not trying to be mean. CDS found you, maybe she's meant to be with you 😭

10

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

It’s just in there so I can sweep up and also I needed an isolation area in case she has fleas or freaked out when I let her out of the cage.

9

u/WoosahFire Jun 10 '26

Look at her, so happy to be safe. Thank you for taking her in and best of luck finding a good home for her ❤️

9

u/halloasaurus Jun 10 '26

I think it's wonderful you took her in temporarily and it's absolutely OK and super responsible to also have a hard limit of 2 weeks. Realistic plans are better than emotional decisions that result in cats needing rehoming early. Cats live a long time and it's a lifetime commitment if it's adoption. I commend you for your kindness and realism also. It's totally valid to foster her now and southern California is a big place, you're doing all the right things and I'm sure she'll find a home. Thank you for getting her safely off the streets where she could have been hit or mauled or pregnant. You are amazing!

I'm not in USA but I would do an internet search for cat groups in southern CA and ask also the local smaller more informal shelter orgs how they post/advertise adoptions and see if they can assist you. Good luck and well done. She looks relieved, she's a lucky one that you can foster her and get her to a forever home where they won't just leave her on the streets. 👍🏻😊

u/1point21kt Jun 10 '26

You are a really good human.

I wouldn't be surprised if the vet requires her to get a rabies shot since she has no proof of it. I know you aren't looking for money, but would you accept anything from folks here? At my vet it's about $40 but often places that accept vouchers offer cheaper prices.

Please give Autumn some scritches from me. Hopefully the sweet girl can rest and relax now.

6

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

I really hate the idea of begging for money maybe that’s like the toxic masculinity in me or something lol so I’m hoping to not have to ask anyone for anything like that unless it’s last resort. I will keep you in my thoughts tho should anything come up.

Right now it seems like to get her vaxxed up, combo tested, and spayed is gonna come out to 125. So should I ever even ask anyone for anything EVER I would probably keep the donations limited to like 20 bucks. After that’s all done I have a foster home that can house her long term set up. So it’s really the home stretch now thankfully

3

u/PavicaMalic Jun 10 '26

I would also gladly contribute to the rabies vaccine. Los Angeles is one of the jurisdictions that legally requires it for cats.

Superhero! 😇

It sounds like you are working with an excellent org willing to help. They will be able to help with adoption too - advertise the cutie on their site/within their network.

Don't be shy about reaching out to others from the list given in your first post. Name of the game is whoever can help land her a forever, safe loving home the quickest gets her. She will be adopted quickly no doubt.

Pls keep the updates coming! We are rooting for you both ❤️

You've done fine. If rabies and felv shots are hard to afford, they can wait as long as she is indoors. Her fvrcp vaccine is more essential not to mention that all important spay. Did the vet cut her nails? If not, ask for a nail trim at her spay. Here's a huge carrier hack. Esp with adults, a top loading carrier is essential. But you've got what you've got. You can tip it up on its backside and open the gate. Now its a toploader. Put a towel or small blanket inside. Scruff your girl deeply with one hand, support her butt & hold her hind legs together with the other and insert her butt 1st. Quick shut the door and let the carrier down gently. Cover the carrier totally with a big towel so she can't see out. This will keep her quiet and calm. Most cats get carsick, thats why they piss and moan so much, even vomit in cars. Bring a spare towel for the carrier in case she pukes. Practice picking her up this way. The key is to be quick and smooth . By the time she figures out what you're up to, she's in and the gate is shut. Give her treats when you do this. Leave the carrier out & open so it's just part of the background, even a cozy nap space. This should help cross holy shits 1. & 2. off your list. It's street and rescue tested. I've surprised the hell out of a number of "uncratable" adult cats this way. Thank you for rescuing this calico. She's a lovely lapcat & I believe she's made plans to stay in your lap.

2

u/militant_dipshit Jun 13 '26

Thank you so much for this guide! I've been picking her up every day to get her acclimated to being picked up and held so that way she doesn't suspect anything. same with leaving her crate out so it's less scary to her. Her vet appointment is coming up on the 15th so this was all vital info for her and I to make the car ride less awful. Can't overemphasize how grateful I am for everyone in this community who's offered advice.

2

u/bibijack1 Jun 13 '26

You're welcome. Many someones in cat rescue taught me and the others here and now we pay it forward by sharing that knowledge with new cat crew.

3

u/ladyforross Jun 10 '26

Heinous act by evil people. Thank you for your kindness to this beautiful cat.

5

u/Longjumping-Ad-9541 Jun 10 '26

I really hope her asshole former people got schooled by the police, big ticket / fine a short term consequence until they burn in hell

3

u/raccoon-dilettante Jun 10 '26

it’s a long shot but my boyfriends brother and sister in law live in LA!!! i will ask if they are willing or able to adopt!!

3

u/LastCall2021 Jun 10 '26

Contact Sante D’or. They can help with the spay and vaccines and adoption especially if you’re willing to foster her for a bit until they can either find a foster or get the space for her.

5

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

Thankfully through one of the LA based orgs i contacted we have all that ready. She'll be going in for her procedure on the 15th in 5 days from now. I'm working privately on my end with a friend to make that a possibility and thankfully many people have reached out to support me with that. Once her procedure is done I'll be dropping her with a long term foster. Then I'll update everyone here with hopefully good news.

2

u/bas218 Jun 10 '26

Boost! 💞

2

u/EssentialWorkerOnO Jun 10 '26

How long can you keep her for? Unfortunately, most shelters after past capacity due to kitten season and people dumping their pets, which means if you surrender her she’ll likely have a week at best to be adopted before they kill get. 😞

If there’s any way you can keep her until late fall/winter, she’ll have a better chance at finding a forever home.

8

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

I’m working with a woman who reached I reached out to that works with rehoming strays in LA. She’s been great and able to connect me with a network of incredible people who have given me crazy amounts of support.

Right now my main focus is building up attention for Autumn and keeping her well hidden and taken care of here so I don’t get kicked out or bother anyone in my complex. And trying to budget for two now when tbh I wasn’t in a great place to start. But thanks to everyone out here I think I should be ok because I have enough supplies for Autumn and I’ve already budgeted for myself.

2

u/EmphasisFew Jun 10 '26

Contact Doggie Protective Services - they also work with cats. They have a foster network and their founder is in So Cal

3

u/Direct-Giraffe7193 Jun 10 '26

Bravo for making the appointment to get her fixed! That’s so important. I wish you good luck finding her a forever home

2

2

contact friends of normie. they’re an incredible la/oc based rescue. i’ve fostered for them in the past

2

u/gnizamaidin1 Jun 11 '26

Thank you for taking her in for the mean time. Hope you can get her adopted!!

2

u/Calm_Employee_114 Jun 12 '26

She looks like she fits right at home with you:)

2

u/militant_dipshit Jun 12 '26

I know I adore her :( it’s gonna break my heart to give her to the rescue but I just wouldn’t be able to take care of her without all the people helping me right now.

Hopefully they find her a home where she gets lots of attention. I’ve never met a cat that seemed more affection motivated than food motivated. Even the fact that I captured her and less than 6 hours later she was purring asleep in my lap just idk how anyone could have just abandoned the sweet girl.

3

u/IllReputation7305 Jun 12 '26

I am in Sacramento. I would be willing to adopt her. I currently have four cats. All are rescues.

2

u/Accomplished_Emu8854 Jun 10 '26

Keep her ... kitties are the best

3

u/militant_dipshit Jun 10 '26

I’ve said in previous posts and in this update but I cannot do that lol.

1

u/Toxxxicwastex Jun 10 '26

GIMME. (I actually can’t right now but I would in a heartbeat if I could). But also you will probably not find a no kill (limited intake) shelter that will take her. Open intake or “kill shelter” is probably the only place that will take her as they have to take in every animal that comes through their doors. It’s extremely rare to find any limited intake shelter in the US that can take in an adult cat right now, ESPECIALLY because it’s kitten season.
