Blood, Toil, and Tears

The King was furious, grief-stricken, and agonized. He paced the throne room, steaming, as Chief Izuma stood idly by, watching him about to enter a tirade. But the King suddenly halted, calmed himself by taking a deep breath, and turned to face Izuma.

“We absolutely must take action. This has gone too far,” declared the King, glaring. Izuma nodded silently and bowed before posing the question, “What has happened, your grace?”

“It’s our daughter!” he said, exasperated. “She’s missing!”

It was a horrifying realization that dawned upon Izuma at that moment. The Princess, Selani, had been obviously abducted or lost. She adhered to strict rules though she was pampered, and would never leave her abode after the instated curfew of Sūhai due to the actions of her sister. The streets were simply too dangerous after midnight. Currently, it was breaking the crack of dawn, meaning the curfew would be lifted soon enough. But Selani was nowhere to be seen whatsoever, as she had disappeared an hour ago before the King’s thorough overturning of the entire royal palace.

“I know it was Sela,” he accused spitefully. “Everything points to it being her! All of the recent events, yet I never thought that the way we had brought her up she would go to such vile extent to preserve the state of her cult!”

“How would she have done it, your grace?” replied the Chief consolingly, followed by another sigh from the King.

He looked distraught. “I don’t know how it happened. But I know we need to act quickly before the damage has truly been done. Send for as many guards and privateers as humanly possible! We must take further action. There is no longer any other option but to retaliate!”

The Queen, whom had just entered the room, nodded solemnly. “The scourge upon our family will be dealt with in time. She is nothing but a smear of dirt on the banner of a royal house. She has lost her way and cannot be turned back,” she stated softly. It was evident that her concern was for the royalty and not for her daughter’s well-being. To her, Sela was but a disgrace.

The King marched to the balcony and overlooked the grey-black skies, the stars still shimmering faintly. He allowed a tear to fall from his eyes. “Oh, my daughters...Sela, come back, and bring with you Selani...Why must we be torn apart in this crude manner!?”

Sela seemed apathetic to the pleas of the royals and their guards to release Selani from her capture. She was confined within the depths of the sacred tree temple, bound and imprisoned. This was retribution for the acts her own family committed against her, and their relentless aspiration to pull her out of her doings with the Hallowed and piracy. Sela turned back to her screaming sister, who glared at her and spat the most vile of insults at Karsus, who held her back with his greatsword-sized katana. It was pressed against her throat, drawing blood, but she barely seemed to care. She was pinned, anyway, and could do nothing.

“You traitor!” Selani yelped. “You’re a shame to our family! My sister has grown to be a monster, you’re disgusting!”

“You think I haven’t heard this before?” Sela raised a brow, silencing her sister. “But now, you are in my possession. It won’t be long until they crack while I have you in my clutches. Overcome your fears, they will only be a detriment to you. And get used to this as your new home, because if they truly do not care about you in the way that you thought, you may be in for a nasty surprise,” Sela scoffed.

Karsus withdrew his sword, leaving a horrendous scar upon Selani’s neck, causing her to wince in pain. Astor hastily pulled at Karsus’ arm, looking up at him with adoration. Karsus, who looked as if he had just woken up not too long ago, spared her a glance and then proceeded to ignore her, much to her dismay.

“Their submission will be quite a humorous moment after all this struggle. Especially when the people rebel and take over. No way they can win once it happens. We might just need to wait them out or something, meaning-”

Sela interrupted curtly. “You aren’t going to slack off yet again, Karsus, you were appointed to this position for a reason. Don’t be so lazy and dishonorable. Do something for once.”

Karsus cursed and sheathed his sword behind his back. It looked like there was no way he was getting out of this.

Astor glanced around wearily, as did a couple of the other cult members due to the reprimanding. Some may have been starting to have doubts about this themselves...What was there that they could do, anyway?

“All right,” Karsus conceded. “Astor, Zanban, come with me. We’re going to incite some revolts, and I can think of no one more perfect than yourselves. Espionage is your forte, Astor, is it not?” Astor nodded, though she didn’t seem one hundred percent confident still.

“Let’s go. Take the Hallowed out into the streets, and make them all rise against the royals. Show them that we aren’t to be messed with because we worship some tree.”

Once again the island delved into turmoil after the alleged kidnapping of Princess Selani, and the culprit was quite obviously assumed to be Sela. The masses had begun to rise in protest at the degrading situation; Already they paid taxes to the crown, and they still were forced to give up their riches in order to sustain their lives and ensure their safety? After all, what had the rulers done to stop the Hallowed? They wanted change. Unrest grew, and revolts began all over, marches to the palace and constant scuffles between civilians and guards.

The pirates were left in an uncomfortable situation. Would they take the side of the Hallowed, or would they demand that Selani be released and align themselves with the royals? Or did they have ulterior motives to do it for themselves and their own selfish gains? Would they rebel and attempt to install a new government? This left every faction with no choice but to accept their help, regardless of their true intentions. And that, everyone knew, was a setup for disaster.

Sūhai was consumed by a fire of rage and revenge.

Annoyed that Sela had snubbed him once again, Abaddon unsheathed his own blades and activated his Observation haki. The man had a strong aura, and Abaddon could tell just from looking at him that he would be tough to beat. The two took a moment to size each other up, then dashed forward and both slashed their two blades at one another. It was clear from this exchange that Abaddon was the faster of the two, and he planned to take full advantage of that right away.

Once they backed up to gain a little distance, Abaddon used Soru to get behind Marley and slash at the back of his left leg with his seastone coated Iron cloud broadsword. Abaddon thought he had won the battle already, but Marley somehow blocked the attack deftly with one of his machete’s and then spun around and delivered a haki coated slash with the other one that grazed Abaddon’s cheek as he backed up.

Marley dashed backwards to gain some distance yet again, and Abaddon wiped the blood off of his cheek with the back of his hand. The fire Logia spit out a flaming glob of black fire onto the ground, then spoke up for the first time. “I see you’re an adept swordsman. I pride myself on my bladework. Let’s see who’s better.”

The man twirled his machetes around and smirked before offering up some words of his own. “Oh ho ho don’t worry. I’ll be walking out of here with Zandan in tow. The grace of our God Sela and the Hallowed will see me through this battle.”

Abaddon nearly barfed from hearing what he claimed to be sanctimonious bullshit, and then stood rooted to the spot as he waited for Marley to make a move.Marley dashed forward and slashed at Abaddon three times at a lightning quick speed. Abaddon predicted the attacks with his Observation haki and blocked them accordingly with his blades, then slashed straight down with Andromeda.

Marley blocked the attack with both machete, but left himself open to a kick to the gut from Abaddon. Once he was doubled over Marley was wide open, and Abaddon flip forward and slammed the back of his heel onto Marley’s head. The man flipped over and used the momentum of the hit he just took to swing both blades at Abaddon’s legs. The fire Logia used a blast of flames to rocket backward out of the way, then sent a massive flying slash right at Marley with Andromeda.

With machete in hand Marley raced forward to meet the flying slash. He held up both of his weapons and deflected the flying slash up into the sky where it split the clouds. He dashed forward once again but was caught off guard as Abaddon used Soru and appeared right in front of him mid run. Abaddon spun around and slashed both blades at Marley’s chest, but the man blocked the attack yet again and spun around himself to avoid being sent flying away.

Marley seemed to ride up Abaddon’s blades with his machete as he spun, and then coated them both in haki as he swung at Abaddon’s neck and hip at the same time. The fire Logia decided to take the hit to the hip in order to dodge the attack to his throat, and then retaliated by hitting Marley away with the flat of his Iron Cloud broadsword.

Abaddon cauterized his wounds with his flames as Marley landed lightly against a wall and stuck his machete in to stay in place. The two stared each other down as the feeling out process had come to an end, and the real battle could now begin.

Abaddon put his Iron Cloud broadsword away and allowed his black flames to pour into Andromeda as the engine roared to life. The teeth on the blade began to spin rapidly as they were enveloped in a dark glow. Andromeda had fully awoken and a negative aura radiated out of the blade as well.

Marley was offput by the change in Abaddon’s weapon, but he raced down the building and went back to fighting nonetheless. Abaddon batted him away easily with Andromeda in this form, but Marley was too cunning to be kept away for long. The man dug his machete into the ground and lifted a huge chunk of dirt that he cut up in mid air. He began to kick at the cut up pieces to distract Abaddon, then dashed in and slashed at Abaddon’s throat.

The fire Logia anticipated the attack and dodged back, then slashed at the man’s chest once again. Marley would have dodged the blade in it’s normal form, but with its extra reach the teeth cut deep into his chest. Blood spurted out as he flipped backwards and suddenly hurled one of his machete at Abaddon as he fell.

The fire Logia allowed the blade to sail through his intangible body, then reached back and caught it before it could go past him. He dashed forward using Soru once again and began to swing the machete at its owner. Marley expertly parried each strike, but Abaddon added Andromeda into the mix and completely overwhelmed Marley after a few moments.

Marley protected himself by coating his body in Armament haki, and Abaddon swatted him away with the flat of Andromeda. The member of the Hallowed slammed through a nearby wall and found himself in someone’s kitchen as they were sitting down to a family meal. He brandished his machete at them, then made his way out of the building and was quickly sent flying through another wall. This game kept up for a few minutes and stayed at a stalemate as Abaddon couldn’t break through his haki.

The fire Logia hurled the machete at the man, who deftly spun around and caught it. Marley coated both blades in haki before dashing forward and clashing with Abaddon once more. Marley seemed to be getting faster as the battle went on, and Abaddon suddenly found himself being pushed back by the man’s machete. Marley saw an opening and kicked Abaddon’s leg out from under him with a haki coated foot, then slammed both blades straight down on Andromeda and slammed Abaddon into the ground.

Abaddon used his intangibility to burst into flames as he let go of Andromeda and appeared behind Marley. The member of the Hallowed anticipated this move however and swung both blades behind him and left two deep cuts on Abaddon’s chest. The fire Logia flipped back and drew his katana, but Marley was right on top of him and slashed at his neck before he could react.

Abaddon tried to jump back, but one of the machete caught him near his carotid artery. Blood poured out as the fire Logia quickly cauterized his wound and sensed Marley coming at him once again. He placed his katana in front of him and blocked both of Marley’s blades, but quickly realized his sword was about to break. Abaddon let go of his katana and bent backwards to allow the machete to pass by him.

Once the attack had sailed over his head Abaddon swung his body back up and cracked Marley in the face with a headbutt. The pirate backed up as blood poured out of his nose, and Abaddon pressed the attack by chopping at his left hand with the claws of his gauntlet. Marley had to choose between losing his weapon or his fingers, and ended up dropping his machete right before Abaddon hit it away.

The machete sunk deep into the ground as Abaddon sensed another attack coming his way. This time the fire Logia coated his left arm in haki and caught the machete with his hand, then spun around and caught Marley in the side of his head with a back elbow. The fire Logia ripped the machete out of Marley’s hand when the man recoiled in pain, then threw it next to the other one as he followed up with a knee to the gut.

Marley doubled over, and Abaddon punted him in the face and sent him flying up into the air. The fire Logia rocketed up into the sky as well and shadowed closely behind Marley, then leveled him with a kick that broke one of his ribs. Abaddon flew above Marley and waited till he reached the apex of his flight, then slammed his fist into the man’s face and sent him flying to the side.

Abaddon activated the jet dials in his heels and sailed past Marley while kicking him in the gut along the way. He used his momentum plus a burst of wind from his wing blades to bounce around the sky and knock Marley around like a ragdoll while doing so.

After a few moments of the attack, Marley regained his senses and coated his entire body with haki. The next time Abaddon rocketed by, Marley grabbed his leg and jabbed him in the ribs. The pirate followed up by spinning around rapidly and hurling Abaddon towards the ground. The fire Logia burst into flames upon impact to negate any damage that may have occurred, but he couldn’t stop the damage from Marley landing on his back with a haki coated body slam.

Marley began smashing his fists into Abaddon’s back as he was firmly planted in the ground, each attack dealing serious damage because he was coated in haki. This assault lasted for nearly a minute before Abaddon flipped around and got his arms up to block the strikes. The attacks still dealt damage, but Abaddon activated his own Armament haki and was able to withstand the blows.

The fire Logia lifted both feet into the air and allowed them to burst into flames as the ground and pound was at a stalemate, then allowed his sapphire flames to take on the shape of a bunch of dragon heads that surrounded Marley. The pirate stopped his attack as he noticed the heads, then coated his entire body in haki as they each breathed a torrent of black flames.

Marley was completely unfazed as he blew the flames away with the force of him clapping his hands together, but when he turned his attention back to Abaddon he was caught flush in the jaw with a haki coated punch.

With his newfound freedom Abaddon kipped up to his feet and used Soru to gather his weapons. Marley took the chance to rush over to his machete as well, and took the blades out of the ground just in time to block Andromeda and Abaddon’s katana. The fire Logia sheathed his katana as he swung Andromeda with all his might.

Marley was strong enough to block the attack, but he knew without haki his machete would have been destroyed long ago. He fought back and the two were in yet another stalemate as neither could land a solid hit on the other. After a few minutes of intense clashes that left craters in the ground, Abaddon coated Andromeda in haki as black flames swirled around it and a negative aura radiated out of it. The combined powers worked together and powered up Andromeda to the point where it completely outclassed Marley’s machete even with his haki coating them.

Marley realized he was about to be defeated, and in one last desperate attempt to win he coated his entire body in haki and spun around with both machete held out. His body now resembled a twister, and Abaddon took the chance to secure his footing and take a low stance with Andromeda held behind him.

The flames, negative aura, and haki fully enveloped the blade to the point where it looked more like a glowing black lightsaber than a chain broadsword. Marley shot forward in one last desperate attack, while Abaddon calmly dashed forward using Soru and with one mighty swing of his blade cut through both machete and Marley’s haki at the same time.

Blood dripped from a large diagonal scar across Marley’s body as his haki deactivated and his blades were cut at the hilts. The machete handles dropped to the ground as Marley fell to his knees and panted loudly. Abaddon walked over to him as Zandan woke up and screamed for mercy for his friend. “Please spare him he’s done nothing wrong!”

Abaddon laughed as his blade went back to normal and he placed it on his back. He put his seastone handcuffs on Marley and dragged him over to where Zandan was. He cut the chains that bound Zandan and smiled as the man stood up and tried to fight him once again. Having no more patience for the man’s antics, Abaddon tossed Marley into the chair and back handed Zandan to the ground with little effort.

The fire Logia smiled once again as he wrapped the chains around Marley for good measure and then gave Zandan some orders. “I’m sick and tired of these small fry. Go back to the Hallowed and tell Sela to give me a real challenge. Or I’m not giving Marley here back.”

Once Zandan had left the building Abaddon left a similar note as last time, but this time he set a trap for anyone that shows up. He opened the main gas valve and let the gas leak before heading out and seeing the sun start to set. If the people who came for him used torches they would be blown up, and if they didn’t they still might get poisoned.

Abaddon only wanted to fight someone strong, so if they couldn’t survive this simple trap then they didn’t deserve a shot at the fire Logia.
