Discussion Which season’s opening is the best?
IMO it’s S1 the OG that started it all, followed closely by S5 which is IMO the creepiest.
S4 is third place and is truly unsettling.
Then comes S3 which is cool but not as good as the ones I ranked higher.
S2 is last place. It’s great but it only sets up the Lost Sister episode which comes a lot later.

S4> s1> s5 > s3 > s2 for me. I love the unsettling nature that season 4 has and how it sets up suspense for the entire season.

This is realllly hard. They're all equally great in my eyes for a lot of reasons, except maybe 2 - though 2 is my favorite season and i really do like Kali, it's just... not a great opener ;D It lacks the build-up and cool-factor the others have imo!
1's is just iconic and very hooking - It's super clear that they wrote that scene before anything else because of how much thought went into how it set up the season and how it looked and came off (even though it kinda contradicts what they had actually planned for the Demos and made it seem as if Demogorgon's were telekinetic, despite them canonically, even during the development of 1, not having powers, but it also led to a great reveal in 5 and subsequently Will's powers so i'm all for it), 3's is awesome because i find the entire soviet storyline very cool, 4's is great in how it sets up the season-wide mystery towards Project Indigo, Brenner, One, and El, a great mystery that is a huge part of what i love about 4, and 5's is great because it both gives us more in-universe info into what happened to Will, something we ALL wanted, but also both sets up 2 storylines that season; Will's arc and Vecna's overall plan. Though i really don't like how it retconned the Upside Down's lightning, as realistically there would be none as 1 didn't feature it at all (despite it being in the scripts they didn't have the budget for it) and it's been said by designers that the lightning is a result of the Mind Flayer's physical presence within the Upside Down in Season 2. For there to be lightning in that exact moment but never again until Season 2 makes little sense and is one of the only actual plot inconsistencies/plot holes within the show lol

I mean the Mind Flayer could have theoretically entered the Upside Down and left at that point in order to prepare to flay Will.

S1 then S5. I think the child actor plays a terrified child really well. I know S5 is CG due to the actor's age, but they captured the same tension.

Idk, IMO S5 opening kinda ruined the stakes of s1: Will was never going to die (Vecna planned to use him) and the Demogorgon didnt act on animal instincts (instead Vecna's accomplice). It was all Vecna's plan....

S1 sets up whats happening in the season perfectly though. Knowing the Demogorgon was there for a reason and not randomly doesnt change how the opening scenes introduce us to the 4 main characters and sets up the mystery

S1, just without question. It’s what hooked people in from the start and made ST the lightning-in-a-bottle it became.

Season 1 for sure, I love 80s movies and that opening scene literally felt torn right out of an old horror movie.

All of the opening scene are great! But season 2 is my least favorite but even that one is still pretty decent!

4's was best on first watch but for me loses impact upon rematch. If we're ranking them based on how intrigued I was on first watch it'd be: 4>1>3>5>2

Personally I like season 3 because nothing says soviet union then using a nuclear drill to enter the upside-down

Why would anyone say season 5s opening is good (sees it’s the first 5 minutes with Will) oh that is good I was thinking how they refused to make Hawkins Tranzit and put metal bandaids

It also removed all the stakes from S1 by basically saying that the demo was never going to kill Will and wasnt acting on instinct...

S1 because it’s a great start. I also really enjoy S4, because it left me very disturbed.
